To think that this is not how to make rice pudding?

So DH has a sudden craving for rice pudding and announces that he is going to make some. He has chucked some rice in a pan with some milk, and boiled it for 15 minutes. Hmm

He announced a minute ago that it's ready. I asked if he had added sugar, he said he's going to do it now. He is also adding raisins.

Now I will confess that I've never made rice pudding in my life - not really a big fan. However, I do remember that it used to take ages in the oven when my mum made it when I was a kid.

Surely you can't make a decent rice pudding just by boiling rice in milk for a few minutes? DH insists that this is how his mum did it. Am I going to have to eat humble pie or will I be saying "I told you so"?!

Cat thanks so much! Flowers It sounds like just the thing I'm looking for. I vaguely remember my Nan cooking rice pudding for what seemed like an entire day so was probably 2 hours like your Mum...when you're 5 and waiting though, that seems like a day!

I'm making it tomorrow! I'll tell you how it turns out!

RECIPE CORRECTION ALERT!
Syrup not sugar!

Well spotted horsemad, thank you.
Was typing that post really quickly in a rush to get out of the house, sorry.

MrsW, that is really great. Do let me know! Grin

Kheer (Indian rice pudding normally served cold) is made on the hob with basmati rice, normally slowly with lots of stirring though

Thumbwitch · 07/06/2014 08:56

OH dear, he had the beginnings of it right but it must have been so runny and feeble!

I like warm Ambrosia rice pudding the best, but have eaten it cold and still enjoyed it. We always used to put red jam in it too. Grin I do like homemade rice pudding - my gran used to make it with cinnamon, nutmeg and raisins; and there's a very nice recipe for rose flavour rice pudding in Gordon Ramsay's recipe collection. I've just never made it myself (takes too long, I'm not organised enough!)

I detest the rice pudding we got at school and that comes in tins. Stuff of the devil. My dad used to make it with long grain rice, milk and sugar on the stove and it was delicious, just sweetened Uncle Bens. Grin The dogs used to go mad for it and so did DB and I.

So easy
1 tab sugar,
2 tab pudding rice,
1 pt milk
knob of butter

Bake in low oven 2 hours, stir once after half an hour to spread rice about.

I always add pudding rice to veg type soup, somehow thickens it slightly and rice absorbs the flavor.

Horsemad · 07/06/2014 13:05

Catsize - I'm going to try making it with syrup too, sounds gorgeous! Smile

I feel I ought to try Mum's recipe too - see if I have inherited the gift... Smile

Catsize · 08/06/2014 13:07

I have one in the oven...

Reduce cooking time for fan-assisted ovens by about half an hour. As I have just discovered. I had a bit too much rice to milk (didn't measure thongs properly) but it was yummy! Smile
