To think shop assistants shouldn't server customers with the straw of a carton of juice rammed in their mouth?

Before you have a go at me for picking on shop assistants I've worked in retail as a shop assistant for ten years before having children and changing jobs. I know what it's like.

I got served today in the CoOP by a girl who was sucking the arse out of a carton of Ribena. She didn't take the straw out of her gob and did the transaction with one hand. She went SLUUUURRRP all the way through.

Then when it was done, another staff member asked her where something was so she took them to it with the carton still stuffed in her face and slurping...she removed it for one second to say "Oh I know..." and then rammed it back in.

Sorry but it was both gross and rude imo. Don't they have rules about eating and drinking behind the tills any more?

I'm just happy if the young people in our local co-op can work the till, and I am actually charged the same price as is advertised on the shelf.

MrsWinnibago · 04/06/2014 19:17

It's not good enough imo. They're getting paid...they should teach their staff SOME standards. I'm not saying they shouldn't get a drink ffs but as a young assistant I knew that I had to WAIT! If you don't feel well or something then go in the back and have a drink!

So what did they say when you mentioned it to them?

BumCrapulence · 04/06/2014 19:19

Yeah it's disgusting and rude. What do you want done about it though? Tell the manager? Cause a big hulabaloo? Or just forget it happened and be thankful she didn't do something worse like sneeze over your apples.

MrsWinnibago · 04/06/2014 19:21

Joules didn't you read the thread on here the other day? The one where I discussed what I said to her?

Bum I don't know...that's it really. People don't complain because they feel petty but it's just part of things slipping. We pay too much for goods, the staff aren't paid enough and the standards are LOW.

Usual not usually....but that CoOP! I did have another thread about the same one the other day but it winds me up so bloody much! I should stop going really. Grin I want to shake them all! Or have a word with the manager...give her some tips!

OP posts:
MrsWinnibago · 04/06/2014 19:27

Do they Derek? Maybe this is part of why the CoOP is failing.

They shouldn't HAVE to though. It's utterly shit if that's why it's happening. I mind...and not only because it's not the "thing" but for them. Why should the staff not get a proper break and a decent bloody wage. It boils my blood!

OP posts:
PrincessBabyCat · 04/06/2014 19:32

Depends on their breaks. If they don't get a 15 minute break every 3-4 hours, yabu. You can't expect them to go all day with no drinks when the human body needs about 8 glasses of water a day.

Well Usual your Ds's manager must be better than the one at my local CoOP. IS your DS allowed a decent break?

It's bad manners in the same way as chatting to a neighbouring cashier or another customer is unmannerly while serving a customer.

If I had been there, I might have been able to choose another checkout or, if not, waited until she'd finished her drink. I would have told her why if she'd asked why I was just standing there holding onto my goods so she can't scan them. ("I'm just waiting for you to finish your drink.")

thereisnoeleventeen · 04/06/2014 19:47

If it winds you up that much then don't go there again. I hate our local co-op because the staff are nasty to children and they hate pushchairs, I haven't been in for ages.

I walk the extra bit to shop somewhere far nicer, with lots of room, nice staff and club card points (if I really wanted I could walk past the co-op on the way to the other shop and flip them the bird just to make myself feel better). Job done.

Andrewofgg · 04/06/2014 19:48

Foul. A glass of water, yes, but that is beyond nasty.

Of course in retail it's a struggle for management to get them to leave their bloody phones behind!

Why would it bother you if someone's drinking from a carton of ribena?

StealthPolarBear · 04/06/2014 19:51

Have you not heard need? It's not doing well at all
