I was thinking about when the new carrier bag tax come in in England. We have so many shops who actively discourage you from taking bags with you as they are concerned about people slipping things into them. What are these shops going to do when people start using their own bags for shopping. No one worried about it back in the 1960's, but times have changed. I hope this doesn't mean shops are going to start checking people's bags as they leave the shop.

It's not a problem just always make sure you get a receipt and have it handy if you start setting off alarms. No different to now.

grocklebox · 04/06/2014 16:27

ooh 10p.

Also, bring your own.

JonesRipley · 04/06/2014 16:27

I use a shopping trolley (!) - and put stuff in there loose. No problem.

I shop online most of the time, but I have noticed a real change in our local Sainsburys. A few years ago they were hiding the bags, more people were using their own. Then the recession happened, people stopped caring about the environment (my interpretation) and they darted doling the bags out again willy nilly

I'm all for charging for bags. It focusses the mind a bit.

JonesRipley · 04/06/2014 16:31

started - not darted

Birdsgottafly · 04/06/2014 16:46

""Now if Primarni would stop using those crap paper bags ""

I use Primark bags to store my recycling in at home, until, I put the stuff in the main bin. Receipts can be recycled as well.

cardibach · 04/06/2014 18:49

I don't understand these shops that don't like you carrying bags Confused Does nobody in England go on a shopping trip and buy things in more than one shop, therefore carrying 'their own' bags into each shop?
We have, as others have said, been doing this in Wales for years. In answer to queries:
-nobody accosts you for having your own bag, or none
-self service checkouts ask about your bag. If you have one, they tell you to put it on the shopping-place-thingy and then recognise it so you can load straight into it
-all bags are charged for - I do feel a bit fed up with charges for paper (and therefore non-polluting) bags
-yes, it does reduce bag usage - look here

ComposHat · 04/06/2014 18:50

Yabu stop looking for a problem that doesn't exist.

Itsfab · 04/06/2014 18:54

Grin Theodorous. Glad to be of service.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 04/06/2014 18:55

What a ridiculous non-problem. YABU.

mumeeee · 04/06/2014 18:59

I also live in Wales. Having to take your own bag is not a problem,

Itsfab · 04/06/2014 19:13

WHSmith charge for a bag now as well.

specialsubject · 04/06/2014 19:16

no problem for me - I live in England but near the border with Wales. On both sides I always do errands with a rucksack, there is just one shop (a DIY place) where you have to leave it at the till)

big bags in the car for the groceries.

really not an issue.

PrincessBabyCat · 04/06/2014 19:23

How is this different from stuffing something into your purse?

Rules only keep honest people honest. Dishonest people will find a way to steal something no matter how tight the security. In the US two people team up to shoplift, one blocks the camera the other takes the item. Security cameras don't do a thing.

MacenroeTheBoatAshore · 04/06/2014 19:31

Im hating this. 1-sometimes Im caught short ( i always try and have at leats 1 bag in my handbag) and if im in once in a blue moon Marksies or waitrose Im NOT paying a fortune for their overpriced stuff and then a bag on top of that.

2- my council don't jave wheelie bins, we are told we have to put our rubbish in plastic bags then fill a black bin liner with said bags.

so now we have to pay for throwing our rubbish away too?

and when I do car boot sales, I need the bags for selling things as many people don't bring bags or carry enough.

and I agree its disconcerting as shoplifters will have a field day.

Joules68 · 04/06/2014 19:37

Self service checkouts go by weight..... So if you put your rucksack on as you haven't scanned it then it will 'whinge'!

Everything has to be scanned as it's pre weighed to match barcode

mum2030 · 04/06/2014 19:40

When I lived in London, there was one shop where you had to leave all your bags at the door before entering. It was a nightmare - so I stopped going there

Sainsbury's self service have a button for 'I'm using my own bag' - you put the bag on and it gets weighed at the start, then you just put stuff in it as usual.

OwlCapone · 04/06/2014 19:45

I always use a cloth shopping bag when out and about. It has never been a problem.

On self service checkouts, I just put the items in the bagging area, no bag, and pack them afterwards. It takes seconds.
