Only venting.

Family member owns it so I can't say anything.

Properly grim. Weeks of dust, dirty floors, other people's dirt (used cotton buds on windowsils), unclean sheets and generally a bit grim. Wasn't even hoovered.

Bought some cleaning products and have spent 2 houes scrubbing so we can enjoy our week.

Hmm

I remember the days I used to rent houses. Alway filthy when I moved in.

Is this the done thing? Do people just make mess for others to clean now??

Confused

Are you paying the standard rate? Unless it's 'mates rates' I think i'd mention it. It might be that the people who last stayed there left it in a state & the owners don't know.

LIZS · 03/06/2014 18:28

Do they employ a cleaner for end of stay or expect renters to leave it as they would expect to find it . Either way worth mentioning in case system has broken down

CanaryYellow · 03/06/2014 18:28

If you're paying for it I'd say something.

If its a freebie then 2 hours cleaning is quite cheap for one weeks accommodation.

KingJoffreysBloodshotEye · 03/06/2014 18:29

Paying full rate.

Nice house just really hadn't been cleaned for ages.

Don't think it was just the last guests. This is momths work of dust.

Makes my chest hurt. Although it's better now I've cleaned and got the windows open.

Maybe you should say look X, just thought you ought to know - your cleaner is not doing a good job. The house was filthy.

Perhaps they don't know. (I am assuming it's a holiday home)

Maybe you should take pictures to show them.

SpicyPear · 03/06/2014 18:32

I use dog friendly holiday rentals and have never come across anything like that. They all have cleaners come in at change over. I would say something, family or not, as surely it's not meant to be that way?!

isabellavine · 03/06/2014 18:33

Ugh, that is not what you need at the start of a holiday. Hope you can have a big glass of wine and chill now. Wine Let the owners know politely- they may be paying for cleaning services they aren't getting!

ThaneOfScunthorpe · 03/06/2014 18:37

If you're paying full rate I would complain and ask for some of your money back.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 03/06/2014 18:45

If you're paying full whack, then I'd complain, perhaps in a don't want to embarrass you, but thought you ought to know, then blame it on the cleaner. Either they don't arrange for it to be cleaned, or their cleaner is taking the piss. Neither is acceptable.

PeachyParisian · 03/06/2014 18:47

Definitely mention it to them, if they had let it to another customer who they weren't related to, They'd kick up a fuss! Is there a cleaning fee included in the rental price? Most holiday lets ask the 'tenants' to clean before departure or have money deducted from the security deposit for a cleaner. Dust is to be expected (but not really acceptable) if there's been nobody in it for ages but used cotton balls are rank. Does the owner live locally or employ a caretaker of sorts?

Cakecrumbsinmybra · 03/06/2014 18:49

I would tell them!

aermingers · 03/06/2014 18:49

If you had to clean a house every time you moved into it I'm wondering if perhaps your standards are a lot higher than other peoples.

Sizzlesthedog · 03/06/2014 18:51

We have had this recently. General build up of dirt/dust. Don't get me started on the crockery and saucepans etc. I don't expect to leave my clean house to go on holiday to have to clean before I can unpack.

Say something op. If you are paying, it's not mates rates it's business.

BMW6 · 03/06/2014 18:52

You have paid full rate - you should complain and get a partial refund!!

FelineLou · 03/06/2014 18:55

I use a holiday firm with some dog friendly places on list. Always spotless. Sy..s.
Mates should not be charging full rent for that.YUK

WhereYouLeftIt · 03/06/2014 19:15

"Family member owns it so I can't say anything."
Eh? I'd be more inclined to mention it to a family member, not less. Something along the line of Hecate's suggestion - "Maybe you should say look X, just thought you ought to know - your cleaner is not doing a good job. The house was filthy." Plus, you are paying full rate - so you should get what you paid for. And as family, they sjould want you to have it too.

redexpat · 03/06/2014 19:36

Did you take any photos?

Topaz25 · 03/06/2014 19:59

Since you are paying full rate you should say something! I might let it go if I was getting a discount or a freebie but if I was paying them full price I wouldn't expect to also have to save them money by doing their cleaning for free! You could be doing them a favour by letting know their cleaner isn't doing a good job and the house isn't giving customer's a good impression.

samithesausage · 03/06/2014 20:00

YANBU. We used to rent a caravan off of family ages ago. We always had to have the first season 'slot' and my nan and mum cleaned it for two hours.
Then the family moved for the summer in as we left! We paid full rate as well. It is very annoying.
One day they turned up a day before we were due to leave, and turfed us out. (They begrugingly refunded us for the night). We then had to hastily call relatives to give us lifts back home!

CeliaFate · 03/06/2014 20:02

If you are paying full rate you should say something. They may be paying an agency to clean up (if they aren't you can pretend you thought they were).
