To think over enthusiastic use of perfume is selfish and yucky?

Woke up at six with the baby, and when I go downstairs to the kitchen I am met with a wall of fucking heavy duty perfume (mil's). The whole house stinks of it, all the windows are open but the smell stink lingers.
What the hell did she do? Bath in it?
Feeling queazy and eyes and nose running.
Bloody hell what's wrong with people?

YANBU!

I'm suffering from pregnancy induced super-human sense of smell at the moment so it's particularly difficult to cope with. Heavy perfume and cigarette smoke are the two things that set off the MS the most (well that and DS's stinky nappies!)

It's the women who douse themselves liberally in it, put on a full face of make-up and then go swimming who are the worst. Swimming along behind them in their slick has put me off swimming for the duration

Pollaidh · 02/06/2014 10:33

I think it's rude to wear lots of perfume. I can't stand floral, vanilla or musky scents - they give me migraines at worst, sneezing at best. It's particularly rude to wear it when you'll be sitting in close proximity to strangers for hours, like at the theatre, office, train, or in an orchestra rehearsal where people around you have to take deep breaths of your perfume stink.

I assume my citrusy perfume is disliked by some people, just as much as I dislike their vanilla and musk, so wear it rarely and lightly.

Toooldtobearsed · 02/06/2014 11:43

Not just perfume either, I was on a train a couple of weeks ago and the guard reeked of coconut. Now, I LIKE the smell of coconut, but this was so strong it stuck in your throat as she went up and down the carriage.

Just too much - but why don't family/friends/workmates say something? I certainly would

Ibelieveicanfly · 02/06/2014 12:34

Wow, glad to see I'm not bu for once Grin. I've kept all the windows in the house open all morning and aired out the house. It's almost gone now thank goodness until they mark their territory again tomorrow.

Does anyone know why some scents give people horrible headaches? Is it the chemicals?

Some Estee Lauder perfumes actually smell like body odour. (White Linen? J'accuse.)

Perfume is weird. If you can smell your own you have on too much. If you can't smell your own, what's the point?

ConferencePear · 02/06/2014 12:49

No-one has mentioned perfume in restaurants so far. Sometimes an overpowering perfume can spoil a good meal. Poison in particular used to spoil food for me.

UsedtobeFeckless · 02/06/2014 12:52

Meh.

I like perfume.

DrDre · 02/06/2014 13:07

I can't see any need for perfume / aftershave etc. Unnecessary.

HappyAgainOneDay · 02/06/2014 13:27

runningonwillpower I know what to get for your birthday then to get my own back. White Linen is one of my favourites.

My Ex used to douse himself in after shave after an hour and a half in the bathroom for his morning wash. Old Spice anyone? Even now, he reeks as if he's just put it on. His 'perfume' drowned out whatever perfume I was wearing.

LilyBobtail · 02/06/2014 13:43

YANBU. People should be banned from liberally squirting in shared offices. No-one wants to be smacked in the face with the heady scent of Opium at 8am.

Sparklingbrook · 02/06/2014 13:50

Ooh i love aftershave. I had a whiff of Kouros the other day. It was suddenly the 80s and i went all weak at the knees. Grin

Dad always smells of Old Spice. Smile

FruVikingessOla · 02/06/2014 15:38

"Does anyone know why some scents give people horrible headaches? Is it the chemicals?"

Yes, I think loads of perfumes/fragrances have a chemical in them to 'set' the 'smell'.

I know nothing about fragrance making, but I find the more 'naturally made' fragrances don't have that 'heady-achy' attribute to them.

The chemically made perfumes smell the same on everyone.

The natural ones smell slightly different on different people, because they're reacting with each person's skin and hormones.

IhavetowaitHOWlong · 02/06/2014 16:24

It's not that I don't like perfume/aftershave. I just think it's something that you should catch a faint whiff of and think "ooh that's nice" when you give someone a hug or otherwise get up close and personal with them. It shouldn't form a cloud around you

CruCru · 02/06/2014 16:29

Should never wear scent to the dentist or on a plane.

Didn't some restaurants ban some scents in the 80s?

IhavetowaitHOWlong · 02/06/2014 16:31

Are you a dentist Cru? Wink

Allthingsprettyreturns · 02/06/2014 17:01

Bavk in the day when the Body Shop's perfumes were very popular my school reaked of Dewberry, white musk amd fuzzy peach to name a few.

When you have a cold then strong perfumes are just hortible and add to that yukky feeling when you are ill

susiedaisy · 02/06/2014 17:09

I work with someone who is a heavy smoker and then sprays white musk all over herself to hide the faggy smell. I can't go anywhere near her. She stinks.

CruCru · 02/06/2014 19:06

I'm not but it is one of the things my dentist says. Doing complicated dental work on someone whose scent makes him sneeze is hard.

Fathertedfan · 02/06/2014 21:01

Sparklingbrook - lol at Kouros!! It was THE aftershave! It's ghastly Joop now that seems to have replaced it. But... I do wear Poison myself, so people in glasshouses..

Sparklingbrook · 02/06/2014 21:04

Grin fatherted, couldn't beat a whiff of Kouros or maybe Drakkar Noir in the 80s.

MiniatureRailway · 02/06/2014 21:40

I like perfume. Prefer it to the smell of cigarettes, BO etc. I work with a pretty erm select clientele and most of my colleagues douse themselves in perfume. Grin

MiniatureRailway · 02/06/2014 21:41

Haha remember Dewberry Body Shop perfume! Although I preferred the tangerine myself. Grin

GemmaTeller · 02/06/2014 21:47

A woman was behind me in a queue today and absolutely stunk of cigarettes and a really strong perfume - it nearly made me gag

and she had some sort of medical uniform on - I felt sorry for her patients!
