I just don't know. We used to have two cats which have now passed away, but we still have cat flaps in place.

Anyway, last wednesday I had a shock when I looked up to see a cat looking straight at me in the living room.

This little bugger has been spotted several times within the house since and runs off when we see him.

Our bedroom is in the attic space (one level up from living room) and I noticed that a stuffed toy was no longer there anymore along with a few other items like some underwear.

Now unless I am cracking up, nobody has moved them to the best of my knowledge.

AIBU to think he/she is the 'thief' or is this just fanciful? I mean a human wouldn't just 'steal' a pair of underpants and leave an experience camera so it's not a human being.

Slinky Malinky was a thief!

Mystery sorted. Saw guy calling the 'suspected thief' and asked him if he had brought anything home. The guy went on to say that (his) cat had amassed a small collection of toys. I asked if the one I was looking for was amongst them and bingo! it was. He brought it back to me and I feel stupidly happy. Grin

My mother's old cat once turned up with a still sizzling pork sausage held (gingerly) in his mouth. My current cat likes to retrieve my used HRT patches from the bathroom bin and carry them around - weird ... Confused

She also came home with a neighbour's canary ... God knows how she got it out of its cage. NOT amusing Angry

Used HRT patches?! Cats are weird. My (late) cat once came home with a rat, still alive but crippled, she then dropped it on the carpet and went upstairs for a snooze.
Oh well that's cats for you.

I had one that used to steal loose change. He'd pick it up in his mouth and carry it to his hoarding spot in the spare bedroom. Quite bizarre but very cute too.

My aunts cat used to turn up with all sorts, including on one occasion a kitten Shock He dropped it at my aunts feet and she told him it was very nice but she didn't want it so he picked it back up and brought it back to wherever it had come from... He was a properly mad cat Grin

we had a random cat toy turn up in our garden, its become a game.... we place it in a flowerpot random cat drags it out and leaves it somewhere in the garden, we find it put it somewhere else.... random cat finds it and deposits on the lawn.... and so the game goes on Smile

I have female cat who likes to carry socks or knickers about.. She will pull them out of the washing basket and I'll find them scattered down the stairs, on the landing.. She doesn't like the dc boxers though.. She never used to do it, it's as she's reached her "menopause" years!!

Fram · 09/06/2014 19:48

oldgramama- my MIL's cat did this! She was obsessed with the patches. Must be the hormones smelling nice

SummerRain · 09/06/2014 21:53

Poppies, I have a female who does the same. She started when she had kittens... She was the worst mother cat in history, ignored her kittens constantly, but she was determined to teach them to hunt with knickers and socks and would carry them around meowing which the kittens totally ignored. Her youngest kitten is 5 now and still ignores her but she's still wandering around with socks meowing for them to come and hunt Confused

My cats are so damn DULL. One of them once opened the fridge door and ate 5 trout and part of a chicken curry, but that was as exciting as it's ever got.

The HRT patches is interesting - some residual oestrogen or something that appeals to the cat? Is the cat female?

Caterina99 · 10/06/2014 03:25

My mum's cat loves socks, pants and dishcloths. He will steal these and drag them through the house. His favourite though is gloves and he will hunt them down wherever they are. Coat pockets and handbags are never safe!

oldgrandmama · 10/06/2014 10:04

Yes, my HRT patch stealing cat is female. At least if she appears before guests carrying one in her mouth, guests probably don't know what it is ... unlike the occasion a previous cat skipped into a room full of friends and family carrying a Tampax in her mouth (unused - but somehow she'd got it out of its cardboard applicator). Bless [embarrassed]
