A typical day:

Pasty, pie or slice of pizza (those things you get in bakeries) for lunch. Can of Coke.

Burger from the takeaway in town for tea.
Salt n vinegar crisps
Chocolate
Coke
A trifle

He occasionally eats an apple or a pear. He drinks beer or Coke.

He's 34. He's the only family I've got Sad

how come he isn't dead of scurvy?

WorraLiberty · 01/06/2014 21:27

That's not a great diet at all but what can you do really?

Have you tried speaking to him about it, or would he consider that rude?

deakymom · 01/06/2014 21:28

there is veg in pizza? trifle contains fruit? have you offered to cook for him or teach him to cook? even weight watchers ready meals are better than this?

DamnBamboo · 01/06/2014 21:30

Can he cook? Does he every do a proper grocery shop?

Looseleaf · 01/06/2014 21:31

I feel for you as I'd mind this too! Is he a fussy eater or just this is what he finds easiest? Does he live on his own?
And how openly do you talk about things as would it feel natural to raise this or would it feel invasive to him? I wonder if you could start just by bringing something yummy like strawberries and gently tease that you worry he doesn't eat enough fresh food or enough nutrients

I have a similar case in my family but in my case it is best to ignore for risk of offending (and I don't think our own diet is great but I do try to incorporate plenty of nutrients along the way) so I think it really depends and also touching you care

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 01/06/2014 21:31

A whole trifle Confused?!

Agree - he'd be better with a ready meal. But could he cook himself some basics? Even beans on toast is better?

Could you cook some stuff and put it in his freezer? Then give him recipes so he could do it himself ?

NoArmaniNoPunani · 01/06/2014 21:39

YANBU to worry but I don't see what you can do. He must know what a healthy diet is and that he doesn't have one

OnIlkleyMoorBahTwat · 01/06/2014 21:40

Plenty of people eat like that all the time. They mostly appear to function quite normally.

I don't know what the long term effects will be as a population.

YANBU to be concerned but you are unlikely to change anything. If he wants to eat crap, whether it's because that's what he likes, or because he can't or won't cook, there's not a lot you can do about it.

mytwoblackandwhitecats · 01/06/2014 21:52

Not a whole massive trifle! Individual pots from the shop.

I know - what can I do? It is hard, though. I am grieving as we lost our dad very recently - I just am frightened my brother will die young, too. He isn't at all fat though. Neither was my dad though.

My brother used to eat like this, his breath frequently smells very bad, but because he is slim no one thinks it an issue

RabbitSaysWoof · 01/06/2014 22:29

I think your vulnerability is the bigger problem here which is completely understandable, did you worry before you lost your DF?

mytwoblackandwhitecats · 01/06/2014 22:31

I did, yes. I'm not vulnerable really, other than the obvious grief I'm going through. But I am staying here at present and therefore I see what he eats on a day to day basis, while I didn't before, and it is pretty scary.

And yes, Old - his teeth are dreadful. He barely has any at the back of his mouth.

I think my DB's is more of a Ketones smell.....he used to go for ages without eating then have a pasty or something equally crap. He is quite size obsessed so he equates being slim with being healthy/ok...but I reckon he is doing himself long term damage. I think since being with hIS g/f he has improved his diet

Ragwort · 02/06/2014 13:10

If you are staying with him can you cook a meal together?
