"You look soooooo tired"

Yesterday my sil told me repeatedly how tired I looked. That I looked awful, was I alright?, had I got my bloods done recently?

I felt fine and thought I looked fine! And said this back to her repeatedly.....arrrrrgh. I think she was really rude but dh says she wouldn't see this as rude at all but as well intentioned concern.

Now I was a bit tired because of being up and on the go since 5am with two small children but I had make up on and felt I looked acceptable.

Maybe if she said it once it would be okay but she said it a least ten different times in different ways.

I told dh that the next time she says it I'm going to retort with "yes you look awful as well" but he says that would be really rude.

So, any suitable responses to someone who keeps telling you that you look tired when you feel that you look fine?

Haha "You look so tired" is quite possibly the rudest and most annoying thing that someone can say.

I have a colleague who starts her shift when I finish mine, and for the first few weeks after she joined, her first comment to me every day was - "Oh my god, your face, what's wrong?" I was a bit taken aback for the first few times, as the next day it would be "Oh my goodness you have me so worried about you, your face, what's wrong with your face?"
literally every day for two weeks. I put a stop to it when I said

"Oh for goodness sake it's my face, I can't help how it looks and you are making me so paranoid every day. If you don't like my face don't look at it!" It was mental.

I have never met anyone so rude. I still can't stand her but at least she has stopped telling me there's something wrong with my face.

id give her a big hug and say... thank you for noticing, things are a bit hectic, and of course id like more sleep, but im fine honestly

My family wouldnt notice if i were facedown in the gutter, I'd should be thankful that there is someone who notices

DP's sister kept telling us how exhausted we look the last time we saw her. Well of course we bloody are, we have a small baby! Yet when DP's father told her a couple years ago that she was getting "hefty legs" she got extremely upset!

AtrociousCircumstance · 01/06/2014 20:55

I had a friend who did this. Until I started replying, every single time:

'Oh god, I was going to say the same to you - you look exhausted! Are you ok?'

Every single time.

She stopped saying it.

People say this to me whenever I don't wear make up. Highly depressing.

Amber76 · 02/06/2014 13:04

I like AtrociousCircumstances response - that's the way forward I think! I see your "you look tired" and raise it to "I was going to say that you look awwwwful" all said in a faux concerned tone.

I get this a lot in work, the joys of being pale.

I lost my bap last week with people saying I didn't look well and had a bit of a sulk, I had changed my make up and presumed it was that.
Today I'm off with pleurisy and pneumonia.
Bastards were right Hmm

She IS being rude...she's having a dig. As for telling your DH...sorry, I do find that men are oblivious to this kind of thing, or at least they pretennd to be, when it involves their family or mates.

You're perfectly entitled to say "actually, I was thinking you're looking more and more tired lately, too". She won't mind, will she...after all its cool for her to just blatantly comment on another woman's appearance in negative fashion. Does she miaow when she opens her mouth?Hmm

sezamcgregor · 02/06/2014 13:26

"Oh SIL, how nice of you to offer to have the DCs for a sleepover so that I can get a proper night's sleep and NOT look tired! - You wonderful person, you're the best SIL anyone could have!!!"

AnotherSpinningFuckingRainbow · 02/06/2014 20:20

"actually, I was thinking you're looking more and more tired lately, too" Grin I am having this to use on the next tosser who comments on my greying visage.
