To tell SIL she could be putting her DC in danger?

Teabiscuits · 31/05/2014 14:14

SIL has just started to put her 5 month old DC into a forward facing car seat. She has a 3 door car and says its too difficult to keep him rear facing, and as he's 9kg now the instructions on the seat says its safe.

I'm no expert, and I don't know the ins and outs of the law on this, but I have been led to believe they need to be at least 9 months to be forward facing. Am I completely wrong on this one, or should I try to persuade her otherwise? She wouldn't do anything dangerous on purpose but I can't help but feel she's being willfully ignorant so she doesn't have to struggle with the seat anymore.

God, I hope so 5madthings he weighs a ton

I'm sorry but I don't think £120 is a lot of money for a car seat. People will need to plan ahead.

When I was a baby I had my Moses basket strapped across the back seat with a seat belt. I imagine people then said, "but a Moses basket will do for sleeping in as well. How can you expect people to buy a car seat. They are too much money." Well tough. Times change. I imagine my DS will be looking back and saying, "I can't believe that when I was a baby children were allowed to sit forward facing." Just like I say to my mum that I can't believe she strapped me in with a bloody seat belt and a Moses basket.

crashboombang · 31/05/2014 18:49

Yes! Remove it

littlemslazybones · 31/05/2014 18:49

None of it is removable. Just what you see and the hard case underneath.

Deverethemuzzler · 31/05/2014 18:50

People don't say that though.
You are imagining what you think bad parent are going to say. Parents that don't care about their kids as much as you do.

You have also just knocked off £100 from the price quoted by the pp.

HTH

Deverethemuzzler · 31/05/2014 18:52

also
your moses basket analogy is shit.

Moses baskets have never offered any protection.

FFS do offer a good degree of protection when used properly.
Just not the same degree of protection as the new seats.

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 31/05/2014 18:52

Little is it the Recaro seat? If so, there is a lever on the back that squeezes and pulls the back of the seat up another few inches.

littlemslazybones · 31/05/2014 18:54

Will have a look to see. I'm gettingdc3 to sleep so will check. In a bit.

Now do a pic!

TightyMcTight · 31/05/2014 18:56

Several people have given links to a good £120 car seat.

My analogy shows how times change.

Oops

TightyMcTight · 31/05/2014 18:57

Hang on. You are the very person saying they are too much money! I couldn't care less what people choose to do. As long as they are making informed choices. Same goes with all the other safety advice given to parents.

Patilla · 31/05/2014 18:58

I'd be cautious about using a seat until a child was eight as a thread on mn a while ago alerted me to a possible problem with the filling materials.

We therefore investigated longevity of car seats due to a nearly five year age gap and kept coming up against manufacturers recommendations not to use car seats over five years old as the filler degrades so that it would crumble in a crash rather than fulfil its function as a shock absorber.

Certainly night negate the whole ff/rf worries if it isn't still performing as designed.

Now if they are selling them deliberately to last a longer period then maybe the materials might be different.

As I said, I've only investigated the first two stages of car seats but I noticed a few comments and thought I'd drop this in, in case it's something you might want to look into.

Deverethemuzzler · 31/05/2014 18:58

you analogy is comparing no protection at all with good protection but not optimum.

So its misleading and inaccurate.

littlemslazybones · 31/05/2014 19:02

I think it means the pillow support that came out months ago. The bit that stops the head lolling about. That grey bit is sewn in.

TightyMcTight · 31/05/2014 19:03

But people were happy with that level of protection then. They still chose to put their children in the car. Just as in the future FF will no longer be an acceptable level of safety.

Ihateparties · 31/05/2014 19:03

The joie tilt rear faces to 18kg and costs £90 so at least one seat exists, occasionally on offer they cost less.

ApplySomePressure · 31/05/2014 19:23

Thank you for starting this thread. I was not aware that RF seats existed. My DS has been in his FFS since 10 months BlushSad

DH and I have been looking at the videos on YouTube and we are ordering a RF seat right now.

PleaseJustShootMeNow · 31/05/2014 19:39

Patilla I hadn't heard that. I'll ask DH when he gets in. He's a chemistry prof specialising in industrial materials. He'll know for sure.

fledermaus · 31/05/2014 19:53

Different manufacturers claim different "expiry dates" - Britax says 6 years after date of manufacture, Kiddy says 8 years.

crashboombang · 31/05/2014 19:56

Apply. Do some research and use your infant carrier as long as head still within shell.

ApplySomePressure · 31/05/2014 19:59

Crash, he's nearly 15 months now Blush Baby carrier is in the loft and I'm guessing he would be too big now? He weighs 11kg.

I cannot believe I've had him forward facing for this long. Sad

fledermaus · 31/05/2014 20:07

My oldest was in his baby carrier til older than that. The weight limit is 13kg and it just depends on whether their head comes over the top of the shell.
