in expecting the council to deal with me directly?

I live abroad and am registered as an overseas voter. This has to be renewed every year. Every year the forms I need to fill out to register my right to vote arrive in an envelope addressed to my husband (along with his forms). It really pisses me off. My voting has nothing to do with him and I've asked them repeatedly not to do this because it just feels wrong.

A few weeks ago I finally got the next lot of forms addressed to me personally. Hurrah! I haven't sent them back yet as I haven't had time what with baby being poorly. Yesterday my husband received an email from them chasing my forms. So it appears my husband is my supervisor when it comes to my right to vote. I right pissed off.

Would this annoy you too?

It's bound to be just an automated email to the 'head of the household'.

Administration must be twice as costly for the council to post and chase every single voting member of a household. For instance, for our house of five voters, we have one voter resignation form. So it would be five forms and five lots of postage if we were all individual. I'm happy to avoid the expense for them. Same happens in student shared households.

Your argument would be the same for any adult child in the house - not just wives and partners ( maile or female, presumably).

But if you've asked, and they've complied by paper, they should follow through to electronic follow up, so specifically, YANBU, but I see their original POV in wanting to have one point of contact for a household.

Woah! I can understand the forms coming in one envelope to one house, though it's poor form to address it to only one of the multiple recipients - and a recipe for election fraud.

But emailing your husband about your voting registration? Shock

That's right on the line as to whether it's breaching confidentiality. It might be that the contents of this particular email wouldn't be considered confidential. But the next one could be.

There is no good explanation for them entering someone else's email on their system as your personal contact address. Household's don't vote: individuals do.

DH email them back and tell them they have sent him an email intended for someone else?

households

Sorry, rogue apostrophe.

FesterAddams · 31/05/2014 09:14

Until they bring in individual registration (which is happening soon) I believe it's still the responsibility of the "head of the household" to ensure that everyone is registered. Effectively by default that's the man. Hence the email to your husband.

PleaseJustShootMeNow · 31/05/2014 09:16

Why is that the man though? That's what bothers me. It makes me feel like I'm not quite as important as he is when it comes to voting.

Who filled in the form originally? Usually it's whoever put their name first.

Parietal · 31/05/2014 09:19

Mine was always to me not dh, probably because I pay the council tax & set up the initial paperwork.

PleaseJustShootMeNow · 31/05/2014 09:21

I requested the forms originally from the council (registering is totally optional for overseas). They sent out 2 forms, one for each of us. I sent mine back straight away, DH did his a few months later. It's always 2 seperate forms and they always get sent back seperately as I'm more conscientious about making sure I keep registered.

You could write to the council to inform them that you're the "head of the household" I suppose. Then you'll get the emails about your husband not registering.

ForalltheSaints · 31/05/2014 11:03

Advise the council that the head of your household is your cat or dog if you have one and ask all mail is sent to them.
