Condoms and Scouts

13yo ds1 has a Scouting task to create a pocket-sized survival kit. Each Scout was given a little empty tin without any instructions. We had a dinner table discussion about this, (including dc2&3) during which I suggested condoms as water-carriers. Cue general embarrassment, disbelief and hilarity.

Yesterday ds and I bought a packet in Boots. The only thought that went through my head at the time was that modelling buying condoms without any embarrassment was a good thing to do. But now I'm having second thoughts. Is there going to be a thread next week where a MNer complains that condoms were brought to the Scout troop her 10yo attends?

As a slightly sheepish ex-scout who left round about the time puberty kicked in I can assure you that a condom would serve no purpose whatsoever and that fucking ridiculous uniform is all the contraception they'll ever need.

Just asked DH what he thought (also a scout leader). He was a bit unsure but accepted it was a useful thing for survival. I asked what if a 10yo asked what it was, he said he'd tell the truth. I don't think it's his job to have to do that though.

We have a 10yo and a 13yo both at scouts, I must admit I wouldn't be too pleased for the fairly innocent 10yo to be exposed to condoms at Scouts. He is in yr5 and not yet had the sex ed talks (although knows what sex is and how babies are made). I realise my feeling isn't fully rational but I wouldn't be happy.

Shockjust be aware that latex is a product that people can be dangerously allergic too. along the lines of peanut allergy.

I am sad enough to have a severe latex allergy. you might want to swap to latex free condoms.

also check the hse website for latex guidance. lolGrin Grin

if you're going to have an allergy go for a comedy one Wink lol

I agree with roseypeach, ShouldweGo and others - I don't think it's a good idea.
