to think that there should be legislation about car stereos (and to ask why there isn't?)

My house is shaking. Literally shaking. And all because some twat in a souped up VW Polo with blacked out windows (because he's clearly an Embassy staffer or diplomat that needs the privacy) is driving very slowly down my very residential road with his windows down and bass pounding out from his stereo.

I'm lucky that I live on a quiet road so we don't get this too often but when we do it's dire.

Why, WHY, isn't there a limit on the volume that car stereos can play music at? Seriously, this is a piece of legislation that I think would play very well with the majority of the electorate. If your music is so loud that windows are shaking as you drive by, you're not impressive and people are not looking at you thinking how amazing your sound system is. They're thinking you're a twat.

AIBU to want someone to stop the madness?

I completely agree! Similar twats frequent the car park near to our house. They also use their twatty horns and rev their little twatty engines to show off their twatty noisy exhausts. These twats aren't even moving in their silly twatty cars.

There should be a noise limit on cars... full stop.

I don't swear much in RL but these idiots have made life miserable for years for us and our neighbour, in what is an otherwise idyllic location. Most of them aren't even from our town.

YANBU. It's really annoying when some deadbeat does this.

Grumpyoldblonde · 29/05/2014 18:23

YANBU, Not in the least, I am getting very intolerant of all kinds of noise these days, car stereos, loud music from neighbours and people yelling in the street, can't bear it.
A woman - would say lady but really can't, got out of a car a couple of days ago near me which was booming out music and then she walked down the street bellowing into her phone, effing and blinding and even used the N word - I fantasised about karate kicking her all over the road.
My 9 year old has never heard that term, so thanks you dreadful cow.

AgaPanthers · 29/05/2014 18:28

I don't think we actually need legislation for this you know. What are you going to do, call the police? And then what? The chavs have already fucked off.

It's antisocial behaviour, low level albeit, you can report it if it happens regularly, but it's absolutely uncontrollable.

specialsubject · 29/05/2014 18:36

it is quite helpful in spotting really crap drivers; I think I read a cycling book which said that when you hear one of these, get in the ditch and hide. They will knock you in anyway and at least that way, you control the fall.

note his plate and if it happens regularly, call 101. He probably isn't insured so with luck the car will be crushed. pity he won't be in it when it is

partialderivative · 29/05/2014 19:00

Sorry, I think you are B a bit U.

How could this be enforced practically?

As a previous poster pointed out, if you report this to the police, the noisy car will have been well gone by the time they get to your address.

It's horrible, but I'm not sure what can practically be done.

Well, there are legal requirements for engines, why can't there be a legal limit on speakers? That is, at each MOT they have to be passed, and it'd be an offence to soup them up. That would be a practical solution?

It's not only about volume though is it? If they simply closed the windows, it would make it much quieter.

It's ridiculous to do volume tests on a sound-proof Rolls Royce.

Not really any legal noise limits for cars - there are for bikes. Closest for cars are things like EU requirements for new cars and limits for SVA tests on kit cars and the like. Can be picked up at MOT if it is loud in the tester's opinion. I've never had a quiet car even 140dB at 8000rpm didn't really cause issues even though you could hear it several miles away. Got pulled a couple of times and had comments that it's loud "Yes it is" I reply - end of conversation. As for making it illegal to modify sound systems, what a ridiculous comment - it's quite easy to make a very loud car stereo that's invisible. Never going to be picked up in an MOT as they're not allowed to remove anything. Also it's quite easy to get around some of these silly MOT requirements like fitting gutted cats and swapping loads of bits for the MOT then driving home and swapping back again.
