AIBU to blame the pill for all of my misfortune

Went back onto Cerazette 5 weeks ago after a break (previously was on jasmin).
I have gained 6 Kgs, skin is worse than when I was a teenager and I'm being a moody cow could just be me
I gained weight last time I was prescribed cerazette but I put I had to chalk that up to late night snacking and general greediness, this time my diet hasn't changed.
I don't know wether I should stop taking it now, GP skinny bitch was very unsympathetic last time I mentioned weight gain and said that the pill doesn't make anyone put on weight and it was due to lifestyle.
I'm pretty miserable but I don't know what the best course of action is. I'm outside of the UK at the moment so changing is going to be tricky Sad

Your GP's opinion that the Pill doesn't sometimes cause weight gain massively contradicts their proven reputation then!

Cerazette is bluddy awful. I'm on Evra patches now and have had zero problems. It's not popular in the UK though and expensive, so doctor's reluctant to prescribe it.

vickibee · 29/05/2014 16:33

i am on same and ny skin is red and blotcy, doc said it was rosacea and I took him at his word, is it down to cerazette? should I ask for a diff one

specialsubject · 29/05/2014 17:01

I've been on cerazette for years, feel fine and haven't got fat, blotchy or grumpy - but that's me.

There is no proof that any pill causes weight gain, although they can cause increase in appetite. Result - overeat, get fat.

However skin problems and mood swings are possible effects.

different pills have different effects for different people. If one causes you problems, try another.

nasty comments about your GP's appearance do not help your cause. If you don't respect her, ask to see a different doctor.

todoaboutnothing · 29/05/2014 17:05

I took Cerazette for years, my skin actually got a bit better! However I did find I tended to put on a few pounds then stick at that weight, since coming off it I've lost that weight and am now sticking at my new lower weight and I eat the same. I have never been overweight though. My gp was concerned when I told her that through taking it for years and years I had continued to have periods when they should have stopped. Apparently it can mean it isn't working effectively as a contraceptive, but that could be why I didn't gain a lot.

My mood is a thousand times better since I've been on off it!

WorraLiberty · 29/05/2014 17:06

If you feel it's the pill has has caused you to gain almost a stone in 5 weeks, perhaps you could look at adjusting your diet and exercise with that in mind?

PeachyParisian · 29/05/2014 17:51

But is it normal to have to adjust your diet on the pill? Exercise/diet are the same. Could do with being a bit more active I suppose but is it really what everybody does?

specialsubject it's more of a case that my GP doesn't respect me or my own account of "side effects" so perhaps a change isn't a bad idea. I have tried microgynin, jasmin and cerazette so maybe it's time I looked at alternatives to the pill Confused

Auto correct, I meant microgynon.

I came off Cerazette when I found myself in Sainsburys crying because there were no fishcakes. It made me feel like I couldn't face the day...horrible! Really feel for you.

whiteblossom · 29/05/2014 19:23

The pill made me depressed, moody, short tempered, agressive with reduced libido. I don't think I gained weight but I was a bit overweight....once I came off the pill I was happy relaxed and could lose weight with no problem at all and er things very much perked up in the bedroom.

Jasmin did nothing for my skin and was the worst off all the pills. My skin actually improved once I was off it and again once my diet was cleaned up.

I decided enough was enough- DH completely understood and supported me coming off it... though I am now 6 months pg Grin oh alright it was planned but we did use the withdrawal method ho humm.

I think the pill can very much interfere/change a persons personality.

specialsubject · 29/05/2014 21:20

OP - change GP. You are perfectly entitled to do so. There are other pill brands, but you may be one of those people that cannot get on with any of them.

let us hope she doesn't know how you referred to her.

whiteblossom glad the baby was planned but I hope you know that withdrawal is a waste of time.

Cardinal · 29/05/2014 21:25

I've never known a type of pill have such split reviews. I love Cerazette, it was life changingly fantastic for me.

By all means, shop around if it isn't working for you. Nothing worse than having your hormones up the wall.

SpicyPear · 29/05/2014 21:27

I was a mess on any type of pill. I now have a diagnosis and understand why, but spent years being fobbed off by GPs and told my problems were not to do with the pill. Some people are sensitive to synthetic hormones.

PickledMoomin · 29/05/2014 21:33

I've been taking cerezette or cerelle for two years now. My skin is constantly spotty and I have pmt most months. I'm allergic to oestrogen and have a tilted womb so they haven't been able to fit the coil or offer an alternative. It's helped my heavy bleeding but I regularly have brown spotting.
I know lots of people who take it without any problems tough Grin

Phalenopsis · 29/05/2014 21:38

I must have tried nearly pill that's ever been invented (!) and have discovered that I cannot take any synthetic hormone despite being reassured that they wouldn't cause any side effects. Some of us cannot tolerate them, you could be one of them OP.

redexpat · 29/05/2014 22:59

May I suggest the patch? This is what it has done for me: no spots, no weight gain, clockwork light periods, no mood swings. Bloody marvellous.

As for your GP is there another one at the surgery you could see? Or a sexual health clinic?

HumphreyCobbler · 29/05/2014 23:08

if the pill causes increased appetite then surely it is responsible for the weight gain? or are you just expected to FEEL hungry all the time and not act on it? sounds grim

i have always been deeply suspicious of the fact that weight gain is anecdotally reported by so many women yet there is no evidence for it Hmm

thewavesofthesea · 29/05/2014 23:15

The only method of contraception with evidence for weight gain is the injection. Having said that people seem to react in lots of different ways and I try to be sympathetic to that (I'm a GP). No harm in looking at your lifestyle though to see if any improvements can be made?
