AIBU to want to want to buy sailor suits for auntie's summer wedding?

I thought standard male toddler summer wedding attire was sailor suits, if not wearing jackets and ties. (Do I hear mutterings of "yeah, maybe in 1903"?) Anyway, extensive googling reveals either dodgy-sounding Ebay shops or French establishments selling silk and lace creations. AIBU to think that navy shorts and a sailor collared shirt on 2 year old twins would be both sweet and suitable, and ought to be readily available? (looks daggers at JL)

Oh they would be so cute... that said DD2 is wearing a sailor dress today. Try Mayoral and Sarah Louise.

SapphireMoon · 28/05/2014 15:27

Sailor suits sound sweet. Good luck with search!

justmuddlingalong · 28/05/2014 15:28

Have séen romper style sailor suits for littlies but not for the age of your Dts. Sorry not any help.

HappyAgainOneDay · 28/05/2014 15:28

Go for it. They would look suitably smart.

ILoveWooly · 28/05/2014 15:30

Little Linens are good too.

Greydog · 28/05/2014 15:30

My son had a sailor suit for a wedding, and looked really lovely - do it!

Hoppinggreen · 28/05/2014 15:34

Not my cuppa but it's up to you.

TheHorseHasBolted · 28/05/2014 15:34

If they are just guests at the wedding and not pages or anything, you should be allowed to dress them in anything you like, and sailor suits (not silk or lacy) sound rather cute to me. I'm not sure whether it's actually considered standard but it's a nice idea. You might be most likely to find them in the sort of small upmarket independent shop that wouldn't necessarily have a website.

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 28/05/2014 15:35

I put my three ds's , then 3 5 and 7 in linen long shorts and shirts, like Little Linen, they looked fantastic.

MamaLazarou · 28/05/2014 15:37

YANBU, they would be cuteness personified. I hate suits on toddlers.

MamaLazarou · 28/05/2014 15:39

The only thing cuter would be dressing them up as little chimney sweeps. Weeeeeeee!

SweetPenelope · 28/05/2014 15:40

I wouldn't. It isn't 1903 as you say. I also think jackets and ties look stupid on toddlers. I would just put them in trousers and a shirt.

blueberryboybait · 28/05/2014 15:40

this is very cute :)

I am definitely not going the ties route. YUCK. Bluebbb- love it. Just got to call and see if they could come up with the right sizes. Little Linens had just the thing but they're discontinued. rats. any other discoveries, people? This is really helping! Also helping is ignoring one of said 2 year olds' yowling upstairs

Cheers, Horrace- they didn't run off with your credit card and make whoopee in Monte Carlo with your savings while sending you some polyester dishrag?

Have you tried Not on the High Street? They have some adorable little boy clothes on there (though extortionately priced I might add!). I am also looking for a lovely little outfit for my 18mo DS for my best friends summer wedding, and am struggling. It's so sad how anyone could think that outfits like these are '1903,' if a little girl turned up to a wedding in a beautiful floral dress with smocking, no one would bat an eyelid, yet because they are boys, for some reason they are supposed to just wear trousers and a shirt like little businessmen? It's so unfair!

kennyp · 28/05/2014 16:03

if i ever got married again i'd want to borrow a 3 year old boy and dress him up as a chimney sweep. that's something wedding related although i don't know the reason.

big yes yes yes to the sailor suits. sounds fab!!!

nelliebgoode · 28/05/2014 16:12

Totally agree with you, Easter Bunny. It's the same with so many clothing issues: wellies with horses on for girls, or plain navy for boys.

On the chimney sweep line, my mum and her twin brother were dressed as olde English peasants in matching hessian smocks and knickerbockers for the coronation. These ensembles may still be in existence. A viable alternative to the sailor suit?

Isn't a sailor suit the equivalent of a peach silk pouffy sleeved bridesmaid dress?
I was a bridesmaid in varying shades of peach several times as a child in the 80's and all page boys wore sailor suits.

I don't like little boys in suits or ties either but you can buy lovely age appropriate shirts for toddlers.

Sneezecakesmum · 28/05/2014 16:16

I adore sailor suits and wanted to buy one for DGS but DD vetoed the idea. No idea why and I was not born in 1903 either!

katienana · 28/05/2014 16:18

Mine was at a wedding recently and wore chinos with braces and a blue short sleeved shirt. He looked gorgeous! I think jackets and ties are a bit restrictive for toddler boys, wouldn't be keen on sailor suits for mine though he's not Prince George.

Weegiemum · 28/05/2014 16:20

My ds was at his aunt and uncles wedding. He's 12 now.

Wore nice trousers and shirt with bow tie at the first, nice long shorts and shirt at second.

Since then (another uncle x2 - yes I have many brothers!) he's worn a kilt and that was awesome! - and dh was also great in the kilt!).
