to give my toddler ibuprofen and send him to nursery?

Ds is 17 months old, he has a cough ( coughs every 5 minutes or so, only once or twice) he doesn't have a runny nose but he is slightly warm ( one ear 37, the other 37.4) he seems a little more sensitive than usual but he's happily eating his breakfast.

It's my 20 week scan today, dp has booked the day off work. He'd really like to see the scan and I'm anxious about them finding problems, also we hope to find out the sex.

I'm generally quite over anxious about health and I'd normally keep ds at home if he was a little warm. The nursery has really relaxed rules about illness, the teacher says they are welcome in nursery as long as they don't have d+v or a high fever and as long as they have the energy to keep up with the activities. The teacher has taken me aside in the past and said to me gently that if I keep him at home everytime he has a runny nose he'll be at home more than he's at nursery.

Wibu to give him some ibuprofen and take him to nursery whilst we have the scan and pick him up asap?

YANBU at all.

Your 20 week scan is important for the various checks they do. DS coming with you will be stressful.

If he's fine eating breakfast, a dose of ibruorofen now and sign to give calpol in a few hours, he'll be ok.

A temp could be from just teething, so pain relief is what he probably needs.

Good luck at the scan.

Grr, damn phone. Of course yanbu. As long as he doesn't have d &v send him in, you will need to let them know so they don't overdose him though.

good luck with the scan!

ikeaismylocal · 28/05/2014 06:25

Thanks for the advice :) he is also teething so the slight warmness could be from that, the coughing seems to be getting less and less, he's happily building a train track with dp.

I think I'll give him some nurofen just before we drop him off just to be on the safe side.

Yanbu most children go to school with a cold or cough send him and go for your scan

chocolatemademefat · 28/05/2014 07:36

Send him to nursery. Once he's out in the fresh air he'll perk up anyway. Coughs are always worse in the morning - it'll settle down when he's busy doing other things. Good luck with your scan.

NeedsAsockamnesty · 28/05/2014 07:44

He's got a cold, of course YANBU

PastaandCheese · 28/05/2014 07:46

It wouldn't even occur to me to keep him off with the symptoms you describe.

Good luck with your scan.

BobPatandIgglePiggle · 28/05/2014 07:49

Yanbu -all the kids at ds' nursery have colds atm, there's snot everywhere! Just one of those things - please don't fret about it.

AnyoneforTurps · 28/05/2014 08:14

Do it. And rejoice that you have found a nursery with such a sensible attitude to minor illness.

QuietNinjaTardis · 28/05/2014 08:18

They'll phone if shows signs of being really unwell so don't worry.

ikeaismylocal · 28/05/2014 11:10

Thanks for the advice and for giving me some perspective.

We dropped ds at nurser, he was fine, cried a little bit but stopped after a minute.

The scan went well, we saw a healthy baby boy :)

Ds is napping at nursery now, we'll go and wait for him to wake up and have some familiy time :)

What the teacher said is true, DD always has a runny nose and says 'I am snotty Grin' which she must have picked up from the nursery nurses as I've never said it to her!

Your lucky to have a relaxed nursery, DD's nursery are so strict, if any baby/toddler does more than two poo's they have to go home!

LittleprincessinGOLDrocks · 28/05/2014 11:52

37.4 is a normal temperature, in fact with the in ear thermometers up to 37.6C is normal. I would have sent to nursery too without any question, he just has a mild cold by the sounds of it.
Hope all goes well at the scan.

BigBoobiedBertha · 28/05/2014 12:00

I din't even think he is ill enough to justify ibuprofen personally. He doesn't have a fever, he isn't even abnirmally warm and it would do nothing for a cough. I think you were right to send nursery and to be able to relax for your scan.

Glad your scan went well. Congratulations on your new little boy Smile
