To think I should give up on the salon and dye my own hair?

Just that really.

Been getting a salob dye to cover greys for nearly a year now. Tried 3 different salons.

My hair is red which I know is hard to do. But AIBU to think that £70 (the going rate where I live) for colour which fades off the grey hairs after 2 washes in mild colour-safe products is just nonsense?

Am starting to think of doing it myself, any recommendations for brands? Shades?

Salob dye = salon dye, obvs. Bloody tablet.

I go to my local college, the trainees do my hair. They use the same products as a hairdresser and they are all supervised. I pay £15 for an all over colour. Why don't you check your local college out x

honeybeeridiculous · 27/05/2014 20:43

I've been dying my own for years, after paying £60+ in a salon for it to look exactly the same
I use clairol nice n easy, it blends with my own hair colour really well, my hair is mousey brown and I dye it mid champagne blonde
Go for it I say Smile

iwasyoungonce · 27/05/2014 20:44

YANBU. I always do it myself. It is a bit of a faff, a bit messy, and only lasts about 3 weeks.

But going to the salon takes longer, involves making small talk with the hairdresser, and costs about 10 times more. And still only lasts about 3 weeks.

No brainer really.

HappyAgainOneDay · 27/05/2014 21:09

Yes, it would be cheaper to do it at home. I used to do mine until I dropped some dye on the lovely pale carpet and ruined it forever until I decided to go back to a salon. In the end, I was doing what noappointmentnecessary suggested. I go to our local college where the trainees are checked every now and then while doing your hair..

WaitingForMe · 27/05/2014 21:14

It might be worth looking for a mobile hairdresser. Mine does colour with two shades of highlights plus cut and style for £65. Mine grows crazy fast but looks good for six weeks. I'm also a (fake) redhead.

PrimalLass · 27/05/2014 21:14

Nice n Easy. Natural Medium Brown. £5. Lasts until it grows out, except that my hair (whatever colour) goes funny in the sun.

expatinscotland · 27/05/2014 21:15

Everyone says training college, but they are sooooo slow at it.

dementedma · 27/05/2014 21:18

I do mine at home - a deep plum/purple.I think its the Castings one. I think it looks good and I get loads of comments on it. My hair is completely white in RL. Cost me £6 a go.
Dd2 has just dyed her long brown hair red and it looks great.

IfAtFirstUDontSucceed · 27/05/2014 21:23

Go for it!
I've been dying my own hair since I was in my early twenties due to the pesky greys, I'm now 34.

I hate doing it, it's such a tedious chore, so I decided to treat Myself on Saturday and get it done in a salon for the first time. The end result was exactly the same (if not slightly worse as they didn't leave it on as long as I usually would so the greys aren't as dark) and it cost me fifty quid!!!
I did enjoy sitting reading their magazines drinking tea while DH was at home with DS though!

I'll be getting an £8 box from boots again in future!

Valsoldknickers · 27/05/2014 21:25

YANBU, I used to get my hair dyed at hairdressers but it didn't last long enough considering the cost and time involved.

Excell10 by L'Oréal does the job. It's a permanent colour which is only supposed to take 10 minutes to develop. I leave it in for 20 mins just to be sure.

I still go to get my colour done professionally every three months or so because I know I probably don't do the back very well.

A comb (for parting) and flat brush (for painting on the colour) are my tools of choice. Good luck!

tethersend · 27/05/2014 21:27

It's very hard to find a box dye for red hair- I do mine with majirel bought from eBay which I mix with peroxide.

The lovely TattyDevine did a consultation with me via FB and the results are better than I got at the hairdresser's.

Repost the thread in S&B with her name in the title, she's a bloody marvel.

Username877 · 27/05/2014 22:53

Try 100% henna. It's really good.

SpeedwellBlue · 27/05/2014 22:58

I used to get salon highlights, but now use a £3 pack of superdrug own brand 21 wash dye. It last 2 months (as I wash my hair every other day) and covers grey. I like the chestnut one, but they come in lots of colours of course. Super easy. Shampoo in as you would shampoo, leave 20 mins and rinse out.

squoosh · 27/05/2014 23:26

Find a good mobile hairdresser, someone who comes to your home. They are pretty cheap.

gordyslovesheep · 27/05/2014 23:31

also red - also home dye for the same reasons

I use L'Oreal Feria P37

I have to do it every 4-6 weeks (44 lots of grey) but at £10 for 2 it's worth it

RaisingSteam · 27/05/2014 23:33

Same as Val, after sitting through a few salon sessions I thought "I could do this", bought the colouring brush (Superdrug, £1.59) and some L'Oreal Excellence, away you go. I set up 2 mirrors so I can see the back and don't miss bits, and the colour is quite close to my natural one so the roots are not too obvious. It doesn't fade before it grows out.

Is it worth you trying a few reds and coppers in case one works - then stick to it?

Tinkerball · 27/05/2014 23:34

I've dyed my hair at home red for years, some fade quickly but I've been using Schwartzkoff Palette in ruby for ages and it really does last. Quite cheap as well compared to other brands, £2.99 in my local Home Bargains.

CallerIDBingo · 27/05/2014 23:40

I'm red too. Depends on how red you want, but if you're after really red try Hicolor Highlights in red from Amazon. I use it with 30Vol peroxide. Lasts four weeks looking good if I look after it, and then I use Poppy Red LaRiche Directions to top it up.

I get comments about my hair all of the time, which is lovely. We were at the theatre tonight and an older man tapped me on the shoulder to say he loved my hair which was really sweet (but then he wanted to take a photo which was a bit weird) Hmm

My hair is shoulder length, I use one and a half tubes plus peroxide, so it costs about £13 each time including postage. If you go for this one let me know, as there are a couple of tips I can give you.

Please please please don't go for Olia or Live Color XXL if you want very red hair - awful products and I've tried them all!!!

Tangerinefairy · 27/05/2014 23:42

I've been doing mine at home for years now (blonde). I'm not saying it looks as good as when my hairdresser did it but it's fine and literally a tenth of the price so there's no way I"d go back.

solosolong · 27/05/2014 23:49

I started doing mine at home for exactly the same reasons. Mine is reddish. I use the semi-permanent stuff though, which does cover the grey (but may depend how much you have) and lasts for about a month, which is fine for me.
I use the L'Oreal Casting Creme Gloss in Amber, which is really easy to use, and everything you need comes in the pack.

burrito · 28/05/2014 06:03

And don't be afraid to mix 2 slightly different shades in the same brand. I mix half a dark brown and half a dark golden brown- perfect!

mcgilly · 28/05/2014 06:09

Nice n easy. Fantastic. I use their root touch up kit which gives a better result than an all over dye - less of a block if color. You will save a fortune.

mcgilly · 28/05/2014 06:10

I also used to love Casting, but as I get a bit more grey, I find it doesn't "stick" as well as the Clairol.

Charlieboo30 · 28/05/2014 07:49

I spend £32 every six weeks for my hair cut and every three-four months I have it highlighted and cut which is £65. It's a lot but I view it as a real treat and wouldn't dream of colouring it myself. I'm just too scared it'd go wrong!
