To think I can fit an Ikea chair bed in a small car (light hearted)

That's it really - eBay purchase of Ikea Lycksele chair bed and mattress and I have a Peugeot 107.

Never gave it a second thought - seller suggested a stupid collection time (tomorrow afternoon) when I'll be at work or 7pm on Friday, which I can do. IH has massive estate car, but it's not available till Saturday.

I can put the seats down no problem. What do you think? Have you done it?

I don't know but it would be fun watching you try Wink

When we go to Ikea we always have coffee/lunch at one of the tables with a view of the car park as I love watching people trying to get their huge purchases into cars that are slightly too small!

LeMousquetaireAnonyme · 26/05/2014 18:32

I think it will fit. the mattress comes apart and the frame is quite thin.

eltsihT · 26/05/2014 18:32

My dad fitted a tall fridge freezer into a fiat panda but he had measured carefully,

I drive a 107 and am constantly surprised how much I can fit in it but I would google the dimensions, will it even fit in through the boot the door is pretty tiny?

lazypepper · 26/05/2014 18:36

I haver had a number of very small cars in years gone by - and have managed to cram all kinds of things in.

The most memorable being my Fiat Panda transporting a full size overbed sunbed.

Just check dimensions first

wowfudge · 26/05/2014 18:46

Just done that - width when folded up as a chair is 80cm and the boot opening is just shy of 100cm. Should be able to launch it in seat of chair part first when turned over. If it was the right way up the chair back wouldn't go through the boot opening.

Where there's a will....

I have transported all sorts in a series of small cars. Memorably four dining chairs. That needed measurements and complex mathematical calculations if IIRC.

I've got a Punto - its had all manner of Ikea furniture in it Smile

notnowImreading · 26/05/2014 18:51

Just take some bungees. It won't matter then if you have to leave the boot open a bit to drive home.

notnowImreading · 26/05/2014 18:53

I've transported a double bed (inc mattress) and a sofa in a VW Fox. You can do anything with a small car - it's magic and willpower.

wowfudge · 26/05/2014 18:53

I like your thinking notnow - it's bound to be unseasonably cold and raining if I have to resort to that though isn't it?

How notnow - did you fold down all the seat, including passenger seat back pushed to dash? I've done that before now.

I think I'd hire a cab, a black one, they are huge.

But yes I once challenged a staff member at Ikea to get everything in to my then car, a 3 door renault clio and to my surprise he did. He seemed to quite enjoy it.

I wonder if they have bets on who can fit what in to what car when it's quiet.

wowfudge · 26/05/2014 19:09

sashh if I had to that it would completely negate my eBay bargain - I'd be better off buying a brand new one in Ikea.

Plus getting a black from where I work, or home for that matter, would be somewhat tricky. I'm not in Central London or any other city centre.

Take an Allan key with you, so you can dismantle it into smaller pieces, if needs be. I think the feet come off the lycksele (but don't quote me)

wowfudge · 27/05/2014 11:32

Even better doughball, I can take a set of allan keys along.

What I don't want to do is turn up, having driven 30 miles, and find it won't fit in the car. I'm at bit Hmm at the seller anyway as they were inflexible over the collection arrangements, but neither do I want a wasted journey.

I think it will be okay - if it was a total no no I would want to give them maximum notice to find another time to suit.

If you take an Allan key, it will definitely work.

We bought 2 of them from IKEA and got them home in a Yaris with 2 people. Obviously they were still in their flat-pack form at that stage, but they are not that huge. The mattress folds quite well. You can take the back off the seat with an Allan key.

About 10 years ago, when they were rare in this country, we had a Smart Car. It was so rare then that people would stop to watch me park it, ask if it was electric etc.
The best one was though when we went to Ikea. People don't realise that Smarts actually have quite a big boot for the size of car. I left DH with the trolly of stuff and backed the car into the collection space. You could see everyone around us watching and muttering that we would never get it all in there.
But we did. There was a standard lamp, a coffee table and a pile of other boxes and stuff.
One family that was watching applauded.
