To ask friend not to smoke outside when my washing is hanging out?

I don't smoke, but if anyone that visits wants to they can go outside the back door. I have my washing out there at the moment and asked a friend not to smoke there and go out the front. Is that stupid? Is it likely to make it smell or will it just go up in the air?
They said ok, looked at me a bit funny and then put it out Blush

Its a cigarette, not a bonfire, it wont affect your washing unless she is maybe stood with it wrapped around her head..

HannerHet · 26/05/2014 15:38

I know they were right next to it though, only a small yard

Bit precious. Hope your neighbours aren't the type to BBQ all summer or enjoy a chiminea

EvansOvalPiesYumYum · 26/05/2014 15:40

I think that was a bit unreasonable, actually. Cigarette smoke outside is not likely to affect your washing. That small amount of smoke will drift away. It's not as if she had lit a barbecue or started a bonfire.

BerniesBurneze · 26/05/2014 15:42

I'm relatively pro smoking, I think Yanbu for a one off

gorionine · 26/05/2014 15:42

Just to clarify, is it a neighbour or a friend visiting your home?
If it is a neighbour you cannot dictate to them where to smoke. If it is someone in your house, I think you offered suitable alternative ie outside the front door.

WorraLiberty · 26/05/2014 15:42

Sorry OP but I did have a little titter at this Blush

HannerHet · 26/05/2014 15:44

It was someone visiting my house, not a neighbour. A friends boyfriend in fact

Your house, your yard so your rules. If you're that concerned then ynbu.

yellowdinosauragain · 26/05/2014 15:46

I don't think it's at all unreasonable to ask a friend, visiting your home, to smoke in a different place because the washing is out. Or why some of you are calling the op precious or sniggering Hmm. Yes, it might not make a difference but the op has said she was right next to the washing. I wouldn't like this.

Yanbu

ThatBloodyWoman · 26/05/2014 15:46

II don't think what you are asking is outrageous, but I really think its entirely ott.

However, if it means you feel happy and they still get a fag, there's no real harm done.

TalisaMaegyr · 26/05/2014 15:46

Is the yard covered, or is it in the open air? If it's the latter, YABU and precious.

Marrow · 26/05/2014 15:47

If it is a small yard then no YANBU. You don't want your washing stinking of smoke.

PixieofCatan · 26/05/2014 15:48

YANBU. I'd ask the same. I can tell when my housemates have been smoking next to my washing, maybe that's because I'm a ex-smoker though and seem to smell the slightest hint of it everywhere Hmm

HannerHet · 26/05/2014 15:50

Glad some are agreeing with me!

Yanbu... Ex smoker here too and I could smell it! Sad

OddBoots · 26/05/2014 15:52

Smoke does cling horribly to wet clothing so yanbu but maybe if your friend wants to smoke you could offer to go for a walk with them?

Marrow · 26/05/2014 15:54

Are all of is saying YANBU ex smokers then?Grin

RebeccaCloud9 · 26/05/2014 15:54

You are DEFINITELY not being unreasonable and I think only a smoker would think you are. Smokers have no idea how smelly cigarettes are and it would 100% make your washing smell. Someone at my work smokes and you can literally smell where he has walked through school after he has had a cigarette, it follows him like a trail.

Feminine · 26/05/2014 15:54

My neighbours smoke on both sides. I am getting a new rotary dryer to place far away from the back door.ex smoker

4littleones · 26/05/2014 15:57

It's OK but would of been better to ask before they lit it surely?

susiedaisy · 26/05/2014 15:57

Yab a bit U. One ciggy isn't going to do much damage.

PixieofCatan · 26/05/2014 16:02

Marrow Maybe! I was talking about this with my boss the other week, she's an ex-smoker too and supposedly so is her ex, yet she was saying that she swears that she can smell it on her daughters laundered clothes when he drops her back home after contact.

WorraLiberty · 26/05/2014 16:05

I'm not a smoker and I think the OP is BU.

Unless they were standing there, blowing the cigarette smoke directly onto the washing, a few puffs of smoke will disappear on the breeze.

There's probably more chance of it smelling of various cooking spices around dinner time, or a distant BBQ.

WetAugust · 26/05/2014 16:08

You are being ultra precious. I doubt you could even find a molecule of smoke in your washing.
