Not to bring a buggy?

DD is 3 in a few weeks and we're heading on holidays on Tuesday and I really really want not to bring a buggy!

It hasn't been used in about a year, she's a great little walker but mostly uses her scooter now. I sold my car so we literally walk/scoot everywhere but still and all she's only nearly 3.

Eeeverybody is saying to bring it but it's such a big extra hassle, I'd so much rather the one big case and both our hand luggage. Would only barely manage both.
AIBU to leave it behind or am I being foolish?

I actually love her buggy, it's really light and easy to fold with a handle.
I think I'll definitely bring it, I never thought about using it for carrying our water and stuff!

I only have one case, my handbag and she'll have a little rucksack. My only concern was the airport because she wants to be holding my hand at all times but as soon as I get rid of the bag we'll be fine!

Thanks all Grin

Any other little tips before we go? Tomorrow is my last day to pick up any little bits!

I can see how it would be handy to have access to buggy on hols, but how it could also be a load of hassle at the airport/transfer stage. If you go ahead and take it, you should be able to check it in with your case as soon as you get to the airport so you don't have to faff about with it in security/departures.

I preferred to keep mine til the gate but I have a bolter and it just avoided stress to have him strapped in.

At the arrivals end though she would probably have to go in the buggy while you get through the airport or you won't have enough hands to pull the case plus buggy plus hold her hand/rucksack if she's tired.

As an alternative could you see how you go with walking/naps and then if necessary just buy/rent a cheap one there and dump it?

Has she got a scuttlebug? They fold down small enough to go inside a suitcase, we took one abroad last year and it was great for scooting around the hotel/resort on. Got it off ebay for about £10 I think. Obviously no good for naps or carrying beach gubbins but might be enough to stop you having to carry her plus all your gear.

Have a brilliant time!

Oh and you have probably got all this covered, but do you have a small rucksack or long strapped shoulder bag for yourself while out and about at the beach or daytrips? I find something you can carry hands free is so much easier than a handbag that keeps slipping down your arm when you're on your own with a little one.

I would leave it, if you need one you can buy a cheap folding one over there and just leave it behind.

DD just turned 3 and I do miss having a buggy for the odd occasion we are out and she falls asleep! But we have converted it to the bassinet now in anticipation for DD2's arrival so DD has been walking everywhere for a few months.
That's the only think I would consider. The naps when out.

Take it, they will check it in with your luggage so really no hassle at all

herecomesthesunlala · 26/05/2014 01:37

It's better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it

What sort of scooter does she have? If it is a micro scooter, look underneath the footboard & there is a button you can fit in to release the handle. Once it is in two pieces, it may be able to fit into your luggage. We just took ours away with us for 4.5 DD & were so glad we did. It was a 20 min walk at toddler place to the town, something DD could usually do, but the combination of later nights, heat, swimming all day meant it was too much & she needed a lot of cajoling there & piggy back home & it was really uncomfortable giving her a piggy back in the heat. If you do take the scooter then think about footwear. DD's croc type shoes had a habit of falling off the foot she scoots with &, when she was in sandals, I was nervous about her scraping her toes as she uses them to brake sometimes rather than the actual brake.

covered I had thought about that and realistically I could juuust about get in into our luggage, she's going to be lost without her scooter but I'm kind of sold on the idea of being able to transport stuff in the buggy and for shade etc.
We're doing this on a shoestring so I couldn't really justify renting one.

You will be very tied to what she can do physically. So buggy would be far easier for me because I like to go for long walks.

Alpacacino · 26/05/2014 16:51

Murphy's law - if you take it, you won't use it, if you don't take it, you'll need it.
Better to take it?

However, I went to Mallorca when I was 3 1/2 and didn't need a buggy. We took our two DS, at 3 and 2 respectively, took the double buggy, and did not use it once.

Alpacacino · 26/05/2014 16:52

Ah, just saw - problem was already solved! Have a lovely holiday, Anonynony!!!!

Just wanted to say, we're here, having an absolute ball and I would be LOST without the buggy if I wanted to do anything away from the complex! It's been a God send, I've really enjoyed some nice long walks, exploring places I never could have done with her on foot, great for getting her to nap etc!

Thanks everyone and I don't know if anyone remembers my thread where loads of lovely people assured me I'd be fine coming away on my own with DD, thank you all so much for putting my mind at rest I'm so glad I did it!

We went to Alcudia last year (loved it btw) and dd was 3.2, she's a lazy so and so but we had done quite well getting her used to walking at home. In the end we had to hire a buggy as she was such a pain moaning about walking.

MummyPig24 · 28/05/2014 12:50

Haha sorry I didn't realise there was a second page! Have a great time!
