You didn't have to do this (lighthearted)

Recently, someone I know saw a gadget I have and told me about something quite personal how he played with something similar as a child. He was quite emotional as he talked about it.

I got him one. It is not expensive, and I felt it would amuse him.

When he received it, he told me "you didn't have to do that". I'm not sure if I overstepped the mark. I would have said thank you to a gift.

I think that's quite a standard response to a gift out of the blue tbh, you're overthinking it

ImSoOverIt · 25/05/2014 17:16

What is your relationship to this person?

We are work colleagues, and we work quite closely.

Before anyone asks, it is a purely platonic relationship. We are both happily married, and he is old enough to be my dad.

The response is 'yes, I know I didn't have to, but I thought you'd like it. Smile'

Unless they said it with a look of disgust or something.

Thanks picnicbasketcase

This is pretty much what I said. "I know I didn't have to, but I thought it would amuse you."

I just tend to say thank you to people - far easier!
