Face Contouring? Is Everyone Now Doing This?

Is face contouring a thing now? Have I been under a rock and everyone is now covering their faces with highlighting/shading powders? It looks complicated (and who on earth who has the time?) but I"ll admit I'm attracted to the idea of trying to magically slim the appearance of my jowls.

I don't like it! I find it weird how people can just make themselves look like a completely different person! I'm not attractive at all, by any means, I'm definitely on the ugly stick but it just weirds me out a bit. Kim K actually looks nout like she does with a face full of make up, nor does Katy perry! And yes it really is obvious how much make up is on in day light, though it looks fab in photography light.

Eduardo - I'm glad that I'm not the only one whose mind went straight away to Boy George painting his neck black when he got a double chin.

HillyHolbrook · 24/05/2014 22:34

It doesn't have to look so artificial. I'm not deluded, I know what I look like and I do just look a bit more streamlined. It looks natural-ish in photos and natural light. I don't like the overly made up look either, that's what you achieve with cream contouring or really heavy contouring. A little bit to define your face can look great when you've got the hang of it. Definitely try Pinterest, or the tutorials on the website Into The Gloss.

HillyHolbrook · 24/05/2014 22:35

I say natural-ish as it obviously looks like you're wearing makeup, because you areGrin though not Kim K esque and definitely not resembling photographic makeup.

TheSarcasticFringehead · 24/05/2014 22:41

Have not tried, but a friend (she does work as a stylist, so knows her stuff) does face contouring. I've seen some terrible work online, but she looks really good and is very skilful about it- it looks quite natural as it's not as extreme as Kim K and so on.

ForgiveMeFather · 25/05/2014 10:50

When done skilfully the transformation can be incredible. Before and after pictures online show girls (ordinary, perfectly lovely and natural) turned into absolute stunners.

But this is the bit that then confuses me a little because at some point or other the makeup will have to come off and people will see the real 'you' - I think I would prefer people to see me as I am rather than a temporarily improved version.

No.
I don't use powder.
It's incredibly ageing.

DownstairsMixUp · 25/05/2014 10:58

Yes to forgive you said it better than me. I cringe did a few photoshoots when I was younger and had MUA's do my make up and they always did the contour thing. It felt really heavy on my face to and i don't like the feel of too much make up. I'll keep my plain old face! Grin

EduardoBarcelona · 25/05/2014 11:04

powder used wisely is not ageing

Justgotosleepnow · 25/05/2014 11:15

Yes I've been doing it for a few weeks now. I think I look slightly improved!
I got the sleek contour kit from superdrug, new brushes and studied the blog maskcara.com
It's really quick. Tho I have changed from foundation to a small amount of bourjois cc cream, as it was a bit heavy with regular foundation on first.

I think the key is getting an under eye concealer and putting it on right to the nose, in a triangle shape, that makes a big difference.

TheLowestFormOfWit · 25/05/2014 11:21

WTF? Isn't it like painting a face on top of your real face?

Reminds me of those guys who grow horrid pencil thin beards as a substitute for a jaw line.

How long does it take to do? I'm all for using nice products and looking good. But I honestly couldn't be arsed.

Justgotosleepnow · 25/05/2014 11:24

Seconds, that's how long it takes. It's very subtle, if it's done well you can't tell, other than the person looks slightly nicer.

Lobbing · 25/05/2014 11:55

It's one of those things that in photos will look sensational, from the front will sometimes look great, sometimes slightly odd and from the side in daylight plain weird.
