to think its not socially acceptable for fat people to exercise

If you go to the gym then you get looked at like a lazy blob who actually has no right to be in the presence of "normal" people who want to exercise without having their eyes insulted by having to look at a fat person. In sports shops there isn't a selection of clothes that will fit fat people.

Then you get people who feel its acceptable to comment when you say you go to the gym/do yoga/cycle. God forbid if a fat person wants to swim.

Im fat, i deny myself food, i exercise till i hurt but i am still fat.

(I am seeing a dietician and having bloods done to see if there is something medical wrong)

Star you are atthe wrong gym.

Can you get into Ayr?

Which one are you going to just now?

snoofle · 24/05/2014 13:33

Quite Selks. I am getting a little fed up of the mentality "if it hasnt happened to me, it doesnt happen to anyone else"

why someone thinks like that is beyond me
Start a thread Selks?

thamrin · 24/05/2014 13:34

markmink i agree with the running. especially on the sports bra - i recommend "shock absorber brand".

and then i see nomorequotes about people shouting abuse. wtf is wrong with society....

anyway, i live in a very foreign country as an expat. everyday i walk outside with my blonde hair everyone and i mean EVERYONE says something to me. granted its not always abuse, hello, how are you, where are you going, huffing and tsktsk..... it drives me nuts most of the time so can only imagine what abuse feels like.

get a set of headphones, play pharrell happy or lego movie "everything is awesome" and try not have a spring in your step then... Smile i think half of it is your own attitude.

I think 1200 cals a day is fine Confused. That's what MFP tells me to eat.

I think most people won't have any issue with a fat person exercising but some people are just twats and I've seen it with my own eyes. I was in the gym changing room once when an overweight woman walked through from the shower with a towel on and the two other women were staring at her then sneaking looks at each other and giggling. It was fucking hideous. I really wish I'd said something.

markMinkowski · 24/05/2014 13:36

I definitely agree that some medication or complicating health issues can make it really hard - which is why i said "assuming there's nothing more complicated going on". I would say rule out stuff like PCOS and metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, and drug side effects first. Then I'd think about processed food - which the OP seems to be doing already, bar perhaps the granola (porridge and sultanas, or eggs on toast would be better). Then I might think about upping protein intake relative to simple carb intake - less potato, more pulses etc., and also think about upping vegetables relative to fruits. Have bigger meals that are bulked out with more vegies...

snoofle · 24/05/2014 13:37

op, are you in an area that has a higher porportion of slim people would you say?

And is the nurse, the nurse at your doctor's surgery?

snoofle · 24/05/2014 13:37

I presume you are scanning any alcohol?

MrsWinnibago · 24/05/2014 13:38

I am not fat...I excersise...if I see an overweight person jogging or whatever I just think "Start of their journey! Well done to them" kind of thing.

Nasturtium89 · 24/05/2014 13:38

MFP works for me too at 1200 cals. Don't think I could eat 2000 anyway, I'd be stuffed!!

Again, can't you go for a run OP? I grew up in a small village and went for runs - have common sense on windy lanes, obv don't wear headphones etc but it's perfectly safe. Or drive to somewhere runners run (for us it was the local reservoir). Guarantee there are people in your village who run for exercise!

thebodylovesspring · 24/05/2014 13:41

Ah op you know what don't bother with the gym.

All you need is a pair if joggers from primark and a byke. Cycling is a fantastic workout.

ASDA sell cheap weights and sit up bars too.

Good luck

Starshaker, oh golly you poor thing, ADs will do that to you. Hugs for what that feels like - I know this territory from personal experience. But heavens, don't take up smoking again, it's a vile habit and does nothing for your health.

Seriously think about gentle exercise as a solution both to the weight and to the mood, and it really doesn't have to be in a gym. Running round the streets will actually work, and I've done it (starting from not-exercising-at-all) in a small village where i had to do circuits because there wasn't very much footpath. You soon get to a point where muddy rights of way along fields look quite attractive Grin

jeeze, at 22g of sugar in just the cereal... plus then the yoghurt, bet its low fat... and then the fruit, you will be mainlining sugar like a bugger!!

sugar, when you have PCOS is not your friend. Most people with pcos have insulin resistance, which is do do with sugar.

( have a google)

elimate suagr, inc natually occuring sugar, and the weight will fall off

have a look at paleo or primal ways of eating. they are not diets, but eating to nourish your body.

have a look at marks daily apple.

first week on it i lost 8lbs, eating more food than i have ever done in my life.
To put that into perspective, it took me 5 months on a 800-1000 cal a day diet to lose just 10lbs.

it works.

markMinkowski · 24/05/2014 13:51

Extremely tasty cereal, but full of sugar... eggs on toast and a small helping of full fat yoghurt (i.e. not full of sugar replacing the fat) and berries, might be more satisfying and probably better for you.

I feel the best breakfast ever is the scandinavian kind of thing - boiled egg, toast, a little bit of ham, some cucumber and tomato and capsicum, washed down with black coffee. None of it in huge quantities so it's not like having to eat lunch. Satisfying but not too much.

Is the PCOS being managed with sufficient input from your GP? It, combined with antidepressants, would be sufficient explanation for weight issues. And while the formal evidence base is unclear, a lot of people are going to tell you (me included) that exercise will be good for both PCOS and depression.

starshaker · 24/05/2014 13:53

Im too fat to do the sport i really adore. I used to ride 4 or 5 times a week but was thrown badly and lost confidence. Then i had the twins, stopped smoking, had surgery, faced some major daemons (Ate to make me feel safe) and now i am not able to ride anymore

OP posts:
starshaker · 24/05/2014 13:55

I have no imput for the pcos. was diagnosed when i was younger and that was as far as it went

unicornpoop · 24/05/2014 14:13

I lost weight on the paleo diet as well, ate more than usual but different stuff. Eat protein and veg. Eggs, fish, meat. One portion of fruit per day. Try sweet potato instead of ordinary potatoes, it has far less starchy carbs in and makes really nice chips.

Needsmorecake · 24/05/2014 14:24

Its been a revelation for me, im eating so much food, way way more than i ever would have, its just different food.

Im a cook, so i can still cook, which is great, i can still eat, which is amazing. I feel better than i have in years and im dropping weight.

im just making this: www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=710593595639365&set=a.573482949350431.1073741828.569752429723483&type=1&theater

for lunch for today and tomorrow. and a bit of snacking later too as it looks lovely.

markMinkowski · 24/05/2014 14:25

Well, you've got a clear goal then - exercise in other ways until you're able to ride again.

You clearly have a truckload of resilience to face twins, surgery, stopping smoking and facing daemons Smile - you can do this!

I would talk to your GP, whom you must presumably be seeing anyway to get the ADs, about weight loss and what might help with PCOS generally. If you can say at that appointment, "here are the changes i am making to diet and exercise", the GP will probably be more motivated to give further help and advice rather than just vaguely saying "diet and exercise".

If you like that sort of thing, you might find the podcasts of BBC Radio 4's Inside Health and All in the Mind helpful - there was one I heard recently on PCOS (not sure of the date, i have been listening to old episodes) and there are a lot of slots in both programmes about depression and exercise.

IdkickJilliansAss · 24/05/2014 14:26

I dont have any experience of this but wanted to say Thanks and what's wrong with people! Working out is for everyone and they need to get a life
