To be getting fed up with my Pilates and yoga teachers who quit class for weeks on end during school holidays? They are not part time the rest of the year, I get in to a pattern of going every week at the same time and then find, usually at about Easter, that they don't cover school holidays and I have to find elsewhere to go. I know it's their choice etc and I don't mean a couple of weeks holiday, I mean up to 7 weeks.

Which part isn't clear?

ShatnersBassoon · 23/05/2014 10:36

Ah well, it doesn't make those instructors bad people. They're not quitting class, they're having a break.

VivaLeBeaver · 23/05/2014 10:39

It'll be because so many attendees are on holiday. Classes would only be half full and it won't be worth hiring the hall/venue.

arethereanyleftatall · 23/05/2014 10:39

So, you don't like term time only classes. Um, find another class if that doesn't suit. Bizarre.

weeder · 23/05/2014 10:41

This has mostly been in Pilates and yoga places that operate all year round but also one yoga teacher, has really long holidays despite having grown up children. I used to just accept it but I'm not the only one - there are always people moaning at the 'end of term'. These classes are paid for in advance and I think most people would carry on all year.

3littlefrogs · 23/05/2014 10:42

Often the venues are not available during holiday periods because they are booked up by child care/holiday clubs.

You could always join a private gym or health club.

myitchybeaver · 23/05/2014 10:42

The title doesn't make any sense.

For what it's work I agree with you. I've never experienced it but I like regularity and I would hate to start a class and it stop and start with the school holidays. I wouldn't blame the teacher though. I just wouldn't attend their class.

ShatnersBassoon · 23/05/2014 10:43

You pay in advance for term-time lessons. That's what you're signing up for. Go somewhere else, it doesn't suit you there.

ShatnersBassoon · 23/05/2014 10:45

And fwiw, I'm certain the arrangement would be the same if the instructors were men.

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 23/05/2014 10:45

Are they in health centres of independent halls?

They may have childcare issues.

I used to run an aerobics class and initially I did run it during the school holidays. However, during the hols, particularly summer, the turn out was crap and sometimes it would actually cost me money to run the class that night. I stopped.

Most people may well carry on all year but the instructor is not beholden - you have the choice to go elsewhere and like I said maybe financially the holidays are just not viable.

Plus maybe she just needs a bloody rest!

weeder · 23/05/2014 11:00

This is not all about school halls etc. The latest one is a health place with several teachers. I started going last winter and now find that the class I'm going to will completely stop for two months in the summer.
If somebody had pointed out that this is in effect a part time class, I wouldn't have started.
Neither of the two male teachers I have gone to have taken any more than normal holidays. (Just saying.)
Of course I can find another class but it's annoying to have to do that.

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 23/05/2014 11:04

Well maybe this latest one does a lot of classes and she needs a rest or maybe she needs childcare or maybe she is away for the duration.

When I taught I certainly needed a rest during the summer hols.

Chocotrekkie · 23/05/2014 11:05

That's the joy of being self employed - work the hours you want to.

They are running a business - they are doing it to make money.

If only half the class turn up in the holidays and it costs the same to rent the hall then yes it doesn't make financial sense to run them.

Nomama · 23/05/2014 11:08

It is quite standard practice for all the reasons given above.

Some classes continue but many simply aren't cost effective.

You should have asked more questions or read the details when you signed up. Scheduling isn't hidden or secret.

As for the male teachers... well, they they may not have kids, teach different type of class - for some (pretty obvious) reason mixed gender classes run better over school holidays.

I used to continue with gym based classes but my own, where I hired the halls, stopped during most holidays, as I could not afford the financial hit of petrol, hall hire etc.

kelda · 23/05/2014 11:15

So basically you are having a go at women because according to you they are pretending to work full time when they only work part time?

It's standard practise for some clubs to close over the summer, and yes, including those taught by men.

You might very well find that some of those pilates/yoga teachers will be working in other places over the summer eg. festivals.

Did you not ask for a timetable when you started the course?

Vintagejazz · 23/05/2014 11:15

I normally take it for granted when I join a class that it won't be running during the Summer. It's quite normal for a lot of things to close down during school holidays because so many customers will be away or tied up with children off school.

weeder · 23/05/2014 11:15

These are not teachers in rented halls.
As for scheduling Nomama, you're right I will need to ask in future.

Tinkerball · 23/05/2014 11:22

What does your title mean?

littlemslazybones · 23/05/2014 11:28

I think you need to relax a bit. Have you considered yoga?
