To be annoyed at the clothes shops

I've never really been one for following tends. I couldn't care less if flowers are 'in' I would rather not walk around in something that looks like it was once grandmas old curtains.

I understand that there must be a lot of people who do follow these trends so its only logical for shops to cater to them however it would be nice if I could go clothes shopping and actually buy something I like. I don't understand why ever item in a clothes store must be catered to teenagers

Unless I want the words swag, twerk, yolo or half naked women on my t shirts or tops that are essentially bras then most clothes shops are a no go. A normal nice pair of jeans would be nice too but no they have to be bright colours or have stars, patches and even worse black and white stripes Doppler effect eat your heart out

The only place I seem to find what I would call normal clothes is primark!

AIBU to think it would be nice to have more options of regular stylish clothes?

Perhaps I'm just shopping in all the wrong places.

Where are you shopping?

gotnotimeforthat · 22/05/2014 10:02

New look, h&m, river island

There isn't really that many to choose from where I live. We have a huge huge mall but there's more restaurants and cafes in the food court there than there are clothes shops.

All those stores are aimed at teens and early 20's. That is the target market, so of course they gear the clothes to appeal to them.

SavoyCabbage · 22/05/2014 10:07

You need to go to different shops. Or turn like I have to the worlds of online shopping.

There are so many places out there that don't cater to the teen market.

pictish · 22/05/2014 10:08

Try M&S ar BHS or something. You are shopping in places that cater to young people and current trends, so of course that's what you're going to find.

ShutTheFuckUpBarbara · 22/05/2014 10:09

Well, New Look, River Island and co are targeted at teenagers mostly.

How about online shopping? I get loads from La Redoute, they have nice basics and once you have ordered once you will keep receiving discount codes. Free returns if you don't like anything.

Alisvolatpropiis · 22/05/2014 10:09

Though, I shop in those shops and have never had an issue finding "normal" clothes. Though Topshop have some seriously off moments with their entirely muted colour palettes.

Zara and Mango might be more your thing.

gamerchick · 22/05/2014 10:09

I can't shop in those shops.. they're too young for me. You may have to start looking further afield.

fluffyraggies · 22/05/2014 10:21

I agree that those high st clothes shops which sell at easily affordable prices tend to cater for the very young or quite old. New Look and M&S for example. Mid age range shops - Zara, Coast, Monsoon maybe? - tend to be more pricey.

I guess the exception to this would be Next. Wallis sometimes has something which catches my eye.

Online shopping is the way to go! Set aside a couple of hours for a good old surf of the net and see what you can find. Pure online shops like Blue Banana are selling stuff you wouldn't see in the high st on a regular basis - and in a good range of sizes.

gordyslovesheep · 22/05/2014 10:23

warehouse have some lovely plain tops in and I got some nice jeans at both M+S and Next the other day

gotnotimeforthat · 22/05/2014 10:25

See I'm only in my mid twenties which is why I thought these shops would be suitable.

Even in stores aimed for older women I find that the colours are a bit strange like when everywhere went through the mustard colour trend.

I might have a look online all I want Is a selection of nice normal tops and some plain but nice trousers. I suppose it doesn't help that I've stuck with the same style since my teens I guess.

Thankyou all for your suggestions

I have this in all 3 colours - fits lovely and washes really well

fluffyraggies · 22/05/2014 10:28

Online is just so much easier than traipsing round the shops anyway! Even if all you do is visit the 'high st' websites such as Joe Browns (just bought 2 of their skirts).

Just take a care with the size guides - measure yourself and the clothes which you have at home, see how big they literally are by cm/inch, not a guess, and read reviews if there are any. They'll tell you what the fit is like. I buy 90% of my clothes online and rarely have a disappointment.

TheFairyCaravan · 22/05/2014 10:29

I've bought lots of plain jeans and tops in New Look. It's my first port of call for jeans.

Sicaq · 22/05/2014 10:31

Agree. What's with all this boxy bagginess about ALL tops lately? Not flattering on anyone.

SarcyMare · 22/05/2014 10:31

If your 5'10" or above long tall sally do nice older clothes

HecatePropylaea · 22/05/2014 10:32

It's fun being a fatty too. Grin I shop in places that cater for the rotund Wink and you'd think they would realise at least some of us might have a bit of a lack of confidence. I for one REALLY don't want straps instead of sleeves, tops that crop at the waist or plunging necklines and as for see through? I've got nothing that anybody wants to see through to. I want at least elbow length sleeves, forgiving material and thigh length tops.

I'd suggest you abandon the high street and look online. You can find a much better selection of clothes.

gotnotimeforthat · 22/05/2014 10:34

gordy I like that! Thankyou! I might have to take a leaf out of your book and get it in all available colours Grin

New Look is pretty good for basics, but it does vary by store - my local one is like a paint spill in a jumble sale, while the one in the next town is fantastic for plain jeans, jackets and hoodies. Every time I go into a River Island I burst out laughing, which suggests it probably isn't for me..

Warehouse has some nice stuff that isn't too ridiculous IMO.

slithytove · 22/05/2014 10:39

The gap is great for basics, and I'm surprised you can't find plain tees somewhere like topshop. Maybe try the supermarkets? I get a lot of basics at asda.

As for jeans, depending on budget could you just get one or two decent pairs? I have had my diesel jeans for 8 years now and they still look brilliant. Though I have to say I have always had a good experience at new look.

Matalan are also good for cheapish basics.

I too would start shopping online, loads of places now do free delivery and returns so order a bunch of stuff and send it back.

Stinkle · 22/05/2014 10:39

I've shopped in all those shops and never had a problem finding stuff - I live in the arse-end of nowhere, I don't have a lot of choice, we got the flags out when H&M opened Grin

I don't want cropped/flowery/slogan stuff either but I've found lots and lots of stuff

I really don't think age should be a bar on things that you wear, if you like it, it suits you and your lifestyle then buy it, whether it comes from H&M or M&S

TulipOHare · 22/05/2014 10:40

Agree, forget high street and look online. I get all basic tops from Boden, they are decent quality, plain or striped, and not expensive (basic long-sleeved top around £12-£15, depending on discount code). Land's End also worth a look. Both have an "older" demographic (which can be reflected in some items which are Shock horrible!) but the basics are usually fantastic.

SoFishy · 22/05/2014 10:41

OP I give you... [http://www.gap.co.uk/ Gap]]

It isn't always the most inspiring of shops, and unfortunately they do have an annoying habit of putting massive GAP lettering on some things, but in general it has loads of great basics, reasonable quality, reasonable prices, good sales/offers and also a few more colourful or interesting things occasionally. Great for jeans too.

I wouldn't get everything from there but I do love a trip to Gap when I'm feeling overwhelmed by "trends".

SoFishy · 22/05/2014 10:41

Oh balls. Gap

gotnotimeforthat · 22/05/2014 10:41

vlad

Yes the new look near me seems to be a paint spill in a jumble sale loving that phrase

Many have mentioned warehouse so i will give that a go Thankyou all
