To think I shouldn't use DH's credit card

Genuinely don't know the answer here, so will be happy to be told I'm wrong..

DH works 50% time at home, and has company credit card which he uses to buy the stationery, printer ink etc that he uses here in his little office.

He's out of ink, and has asked me to go into town to get the cartridges, using his card and pin. I said no, as to me it doesn't seem right, and what if the assistant challenged me - not that anyone ever looks at the name on the card, but it would be just my luck if they did! He's got the hump with me now (it's not the first time I've said no to this type of request).

So, am I being unreasonable, or is it legal and I'm wrong to think I can't use it?

It wasn't just the rules of the credit card either, any misuse was a disciplinary offence.

firesidechat · 22/05/2014 09:38

So it's not his own company and he's an employee? I think that changes things considerably and I definitely wouldn't do it. It must be against company rules, so even more dodgy and not worth the risk.

Ilovehamabeads · 22/05/2014 09:39

shatners that's exactly why I'm holding back. If anything is going to go wrong with the machine it will be today and I'll feel like a complete tit.
Actually think I'm going to stick with my original decision. Enough people here have said its wrong for me to at least feel like I'm not being totally unreasonable. He actually works for a big bank, so I think if they found out he'd given the pin out he would be in a lot of trouble.
Thanks for helping everyone.

Is it his company?
Then yes, it's against the rules but the worst is probably that card will be confiscated and his bank will tell him off for being a very silly boy.

If he is an employee?
Absolutely not. It's a serious breach of any company's security policies. I'm actually shocked that he thinks this is ok and god help any employee of mine I find doing something like this.
If his employers find out, he will 99% certain be sacked for Gross Misconduct. So if it's queried in the shop, card confiscated or bank phoned, he's in deep shit. Rightly.

Flexibilityiskey · 22/05/2014 09:41

Yes, I agree, it will be breaking some rules, although there is no crime as far as I can see. I must admit, I didn't read properly, and was under the impression it was the OP's DH's credit card. I am not sure I would be happy using a company credit card, as it could get the DH in trouble with his company if it was discovered, as it is bound to be against the rules.

PassTheCremeEggs · 22/05/2014 09:43

Little - sorry but that's just not true.
If he gives permission for it to be used there's no fraud. It's not illegal to give someone permission to use your card (or for them to use it). The rules are that the account holder is responsible for the card and all spending made on it. Doesn't mean someone else can't use it with permission. The only way the bank would even get involved is if OP's DH claimed it had been used fraudulently, and he's hardly going to do that....?

OcadoSubstitutedMyHummus · 22/05/2014 09:45

I would pay cash, put in an expenses claim and if that is problematic to get the cash back just suck it up. Cartridges aren't expensive enough to warrant the grief that could potentially be caused here. And next time he is in town he should stock up on a few with the company credit card.

Littledidsheknow · 22/05/2014 10:21

Ah, well further investigation reveals that, yes, it's not illegal per se, so hands up, I was wrong about that! however cc companies do not allow you to let anyone else use their car, cremeeggs. That is a breach of the contract. And whilst it is pretty unlikely they'd find out, in the OP's case it could mean deep doodoo for her husband with his employers. It is actually THEIR credit account, not OP's DH's. They have not authorised this use.

firesidechat · 22/05/2014 10:30

There was a case recently where fraud was committed on someone's card. The bank discovered that she had given her partner the card and pin to use and they point blank refused to investigate the fraud or refund the money. The fraud wasn't connected to her partner, but she had broken the rules of the contract and that was that.

In any case this is a company card and there are even more valid reasons not to take the risk.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 22/05/2014 10:34

Yes, I can believe that, my card was defrauded a few years ago and I had to sign all sorts of forms to confirm that no one else had ever had my PIN or used my card, I would have felt very nervous about signing those if I had been letting DH use my card. As it was I got all the money refunded pending the investigation so I was not out of pocket.

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 22/05/2014 10:41

I use my husband's credit card for shopping but I'm not sure I would be happy using a company card.

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 22/05/2014 10:43

I've done it loads of times with DH's business card when I've gone and got him stuff for work - it's chip and pin, they don't even get to see the card. You have his permission, you'll be fine.

QueenofallIsee · 22/05/2014 10:46

I do it all the time - I know his pins better than he does

Littledidsheknow · 22/05/2014 10:47

The permission is not the OPs husband's to give, Betty... it is his employer's credit account, not his!

it will be against the terms and conditions of the card for someone else to use it and to know the PIN

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 22/05/2014 12:04

True Little - that's different then. My DH is self employed so therefore it's his company credit card so I thought that was the same for the OP for some reason :)

herecomesthesunlala · 22/05/2014 12:04

noone in the store will even see the card, you just pop it in the machine and punch the pin in. I think YABU not to do a simple thing for your DH who is busy today.

lylasmam2012 · 22/05/2014 12:05

DH's cards are always in my purse. He never gets to use them, they are mine!

redandchecker · 22/05/2014 12:07

I don't think store assistants ever challenge people over this do they? You put the pin in and they don't see the card.

I've used my DP's, my mums and my best friends cards before when they've asked me too - I haven't ever thought twice about it tbh.

Hoppinggreen · 22/05/2014 12:07

I don't think it matters if you, I your DH or anyone else on here thinks it's wrong is an issue.
It's what his employer would think that counts - even if he thinks they wouldn't mind it could probably be counted as Gross misconduct if the employer wanted to be awkward and lose him his job so really not worth the risk. I used to have a company card and if I had let any else it it would have be instant dismissal.
DH does use my company card but it's my own business so problem.

iMacHunt · 22/05/2014 12:11

I would do it.

And if something did happen then I would be all 'Oh jeez. I picked up the wrong card. Ack. I am such a twat. Okay, I'll have to come back.' And then leave the store.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 22/05/2014 13:01

For a one-off I can see why this happens, but I'm genuinely surprised so many people do it on a routine basis, why don't you use your own cards? Or get a second card on a partner's account?

Contraryish · 22/05/2014 13:06

I have been known to sign for payments on my husband's card on his behalf!

magpiegin · 22/05/2014 17:53

I would definitely not use a company card as you could get into trouble as you won't have their permission. I am surprised how many people use their partner's cards. It is against the terms and conditions and as others have said, if there's fraud on the account they can refuse to investigate. I have cards for 2 of my husbands accounts but they are in my name so I would never have to use his.
