To want some space in the gym changing room

I went for a swim earlier. There was hardly anyone using the gym so the communal changing room was empty. I started to get dressed and a woman arrived in and plonked herself about 3 feet away from me on the same bench. The large changing room was eeempty. It's not the first time this has happened. Why do people do this and AIBU to want privacy in the changing room whenever it's possible?

Princessbabycat - the gym is quite small but there are other people in using the free weights, cross trainers, bikes, I would have said there was about 10 people in the gym at the time.

And if you did go flying i would have spotted you seeing as the treadmills are right infront of the mirrors! I would laugh, admittedly, then picked you up!

Although the youngish girl that used the treadmill next me did have nice trainers on that i was giving sideways glances at and admiring them.

I think this might be a British thing though. My DS has a Colombian stepmother, and he says in Colombia she always sits next to people on their own as it's considered rude not to.
I don't know if it's true though or she's just one of those people.Wink

PrincessBabyCat I don't want camaraderie when I work out. Urgh.

Once DP and I needed to get something out of the fully packed boot of the car, DS had been sick so we needed to get him some clean clothes. We pulled into a really quiet area of a car park and started unloading onto the floor of the space behind, we had only got a few things out when somebody decided to pull up into that space behind us leaving us with very little room. I looked at him with a Confused look on my face, he registered it but still walked off - dickhead. DP and I were left thinking WTF? Some people do it just to be annoying and a bit of a power and control thing.

That's interesting Noid - I'm in London and the amount of people who get on an empty bus and then sit right next to me! Maybe they are from places where that's considered polite (while I grumble under my breath)?

"I was the only person in the gym on the treadmills and a youngish girl came and used the one right next to me. "

Maybe she feels intimidated by big sweaty half-dressed blokes and felt safer using the machine next to a kind looking kick-ass type Mumsnetter?

In car parks, if you reverse park like me, it is far easier to park if you can line yourself up with another car rather than trying to see the white lines.

I don't like it when people encroach on my personal space. It really bothers me in the ladies' room, when there are multiple empty stalls, and another woman chooses one right next to me. I was in a stall in the ladies' room at the grocery store last week, and another woman came in, took the stall directly next to mine, and then started talking. I thought she was talking to me at first, but it turned out she had made a call on her cell phone.

I agree odd in many situations. However, wrt to the treadmill situation I don't personally think that's odd. If I go to spinning I have my preferred bike and would go and sit on it even if the next bike was taken and we were the only people in the room. I am shameless though and possibly weird if this thread is to be believed

PrincessBabyCat

now that you know how it really makes us feel............ will you change your ways?

Or continue to creep everyone out ?

I had this when I went to the spa a few weeks ago. Had my sauna etc etc, sooo relaxed, go back into the changing room and open my locker to get my stuff. I am in the corner, I couldn't get any further over if I tried because the wall is there.

A woman came out too and was using the locker next but one ie a good foot away from mine. She chose to stand virtually on me to get dressed despite the changing room being empty apart from us.

You know the bit where you hold the towel around you so you can remove your swim cossie and you angle yourself away from other people in case they see your fanjo? She angled herself towards me.

When your towel swipes the woman next to you [as hers did with me] it's time to step away a little bit.

Revenge Did it not occur to you that you had pulled? Grin

Ledkr · 23/05/2014 19:08

Op you should have farted or scratched your fanjo!

Sparklingbrook · 23/05/2014 19:19

I just want other people to stay away from me in general. People that have to stand virtually touching you in a queue give me the rage.

I don't think I would do well at a gym by the sound of it.
