To be annoyed about World Cup publicity

.... When there is very little ( in my opinion) re the Commonwealth games.

My gripe really is because the Vommonwealth games are taking place in this country, the World Cup does not even involve the whole country.

Yet everywhere I look everything is being promoted by World Cup.

In shops, magazines etc.

For example a magazine had a food feature on food to make during the World Cup ( I think it was a morrisons mag, not sure)

In argos they had banners all around re the World Cup.

What about the Commonwealth games, it's an event taking place in our country, and also all the nations of the Uk are taking part, unlike the World Cup.

Ggggggggrrrrrrrrrr

The World Cup is more popular, businesses know this so will use it to promote their businesses.

It's all about profit.

squoosh · 20/05/2014 20:38

Football is far more popular than athletics and far more commercial.

CoffeeTea103 · 20/05/2014 20:38

It's the biggest sporting event, doh.

Shakey1500 · 20/05/2014 20:40

Sorry, but Grin at Vommonwealth Games.

I'd have won that after a monstrous night out last weekend Envy

TucsonGirl · 20/05/2014 20:54

The World Cup is about 1000 times as popular as the Commonwealth games. It's bigger than the Olympics even.

specialsubject · 20/05/2014 20:55

I've zero interest in either, and if it wasn't for the odd news item I would be unaware of both. But I am quite good at not seeing ads and I very rarely shop for anything except food.

spectator sport - boring, with the exception of a bit of Wimbledon. It's summer, plenty of other fun things to do!

Joules68 · 20/05/2014 20:56

I can't see commonwealth bunting and flags selling very well at all

ComposHat · 20/05/2014 20:58

The commonwealth games? A glorified inter school sports cooked up by the English so they can won events that the Americans were really good at and enforce their own sense of superiority over people they'd colonised. Sort of backfired when they discovered that the black and brown people they'd colonised were capable of ripping them a new hoop in a lot of sports.

A lot of the top athletes won't show up as it is lightly regarded. The world cup is one of the few truly global events in the world. The commonwealth gsmes is happening a forty minute train ride from where I live and no one seems to give a shite.

helensburgh · 20/05/2014 21:26

Yes I see all those points!

Just saddens me I guess, it's the point the commonweal games are taking place in the uk, yet are being ignored .

Ho hum!

I agree.

And to make matters worse, at DS1's school, the whole school is doing the World Cup as their topic this term so they are getting it thrust down their throats there too (they've already had the local Division 1 (? disclaimer - I know nothing about footie!) football manager to visit and do a talk, and then a premiership footballer come to do a talk and workshop with them as well.

DS1 is loving it as he is sports mad and enjoys football (although rugby is his real love). However if I'd been at the school, and I wonder how many there are that are like me, I would have hated it as I find football really boring, tedious and a real turn off.

The irony is that an old boy won an olympic gold in London and he's visited the school afterwards to show them, so they had a day for him and athletics. I even think he will be at the Commonwealth Games. And yet - for football, they're devoting a whole term to it. Sad

Figster · 20/05/2014 22:19

How ironic I was thinking just the other day that it's been quite muted this time round.........thankfully no delusional dramas that they have a chance of anything too.

deakymom · 20/05/2014 22:23

i have zero interest in it but im really annoyed that i cannot find kids clothing without a football a flag or some footy related nonsense on it unless i pay a fortune or buy second hand i had to drive twenty miles just to get pjs that were non footy and affordable i just dont see why it has to be rammed down your throat

AWimbaWay · 20/05/2014 22:28
