To think this is okay for children to eat.........

Okay so i am 99.9 per cent i am NOT BU

My mum came to stay with me last week and were chatting on facebook earlier and she mentioned she thought the kids needed to eat "more crap"

I asked her why and she said she thinks they are too skinny (the two oldest are boys and quite lean, but not skinny and nowhere near underweight for their height)and that they should just eat normal food.

We dont see my mum much because i moved away when i left home at 16,so the kids see her a couple of times a year, she is a social worker (it scares me that someone that did such a bad job at being a parent and has such wierd opinions on the way kids should be raised is a social worker) so she is busy.

When she was here they had

Breakfast- Kippers and scrambled eggs, toast, probably orange juice too.

Lunch-DH was home so they had some pasta with a homemade tomato sauce and i made salad to go with it and obviously there was cheese on top.

Dinner-I made a piri piri roast chicken, some salad and some homemade colslaw, and wedges.

I cant remember what we had for pudding but we would of had some as i always make puddings at weekends and when people come over, plus there was fruit and veg in between for snacks.

The kids eat really well, arent fussy, and they do get things like sweets, crisps, ice creams, just not every day.

Its worth saying that my mum is hugely obese, about 22stone,im not tiny either, about 14 stone at 5ft 5,so i have my own food issues,i dont get why she wouldnt want them to eat healthily?

No, you're definitely not being unreasonable but some people do have really funny ideas about children's food.

Your menu sounds yummy :)

winnertakesitall · 18/05/2014 22:17

Definitely not bu. The menu sound good- and sustaining for your children! Don't listen to your dm. If they're happy and you're happy don't give it another minutes thought!!

ThisFenceIsComfy · 18/05/2014 22:17

I definitely agree that it's insecurity. She sees you doing a better job than her as a parent and it makes her feel insecure

hedgetrimmer · 18/05/2014 22:18

She was strange about food when i was little,i always remember her being big but she used to talk about diets and calories all the time, even when i was really little, but at the same time we ate really shitty processed food. She used to count everything and if i dared take anything without asking she would go mad.

You've made me hungry, your family have a good diet, her weight suggests that her diet is extremely unhealthy and dangerous. Ignore her 'advice', it's crap because she hasn't got a clue what she's talking about. Point that out to her if you feel so inclined.

YeGodsAndLittleFishes · 18/05/2014 22:26

Can I come and eat atvyours on weekends please, OP.

I think your DMum might be mixing you up with some other family.

All that home cooked food sounds fab.

AElfgifu · 18/05/2014 22:26

maybe your children's diets are a bit light on fats? especially needed for brain growth.

hedgetrimmer · 18/05/2014 22:32

I thought the fish and the eggs were good for things like that AElfgifu?

Good diets as long as they get a decent portion rather than just a spoonful or two I guess.
Can I ask why are you overweight if that's the food consumed in your house and snacks and puddings are rationed.
Do other people weigh their children/ know what they are supposed to be? My friends and I just look and sort of weigh them up mentally. Wouldn't have a clue what they are supposed to weigh.

GreenEyedGoblin · 18/05/2014 22:43

I can remember my mum moaning with ds1 that we weren't feeding him 'properly' because he had salad sticks every day for lunch (with a sandwich/soup etc too).

The kids are now 6 and 4 and have salad every day for lunch and she does grudgingly accept that they eat salad a lot more than other kids their age generally, and enjoy it. She still makes occasional noises about proper food though, which salad obviously doesn't count as!

hedgetrimmer · 18/05/2014 22:45

I eat quite big portions (the same size as dh who is normal sized but a man so has "man sized portions) i also eat chocolate/biscuits/ice cream etc in the evening while watching tv,and dont do hardly any excercise.I know people talk about running around after the kids but its really not that hard.

I am working on all of this.....I do try from time to time to lose weight and i know as the kids get older they will realise im fat.I think i am a bit of a secret eater,i would never eat the amount i do on my own in front of dh (mealtimes aside)but when hes not there im straight in the cuboards,a bit like when i was a child too.

Yep fish, eggs, cheese, salad dressing, avocado, veg oil on the wedges and a few nuts/pine nuts sprinkled about. All good.

Maybe check thyroid function, see if there's some underlying cause for weight gain?

hedgetrimmer · 18/05/2014 22:47

I weigh mine occasionally, probably once or twice a year,we measure their height on the kitchen door too so i just do it out of curiosity.

How frustrating for you. My mum in law does this (obese, type 2 diabetes, heart problems). Apparently kids need treats. Who knew?

I think a lot of people don't like seeing skinny kids. I was and my kids are. It's healthy if its natural for you and you eat well.

I think your diet is great - not light on fats. Although can you tell me please how you did the coleslaw? Was it home made mayo? drool

Revengeofthechocolatebunny · 18/05/2014 22:52

Sounds good to me. Can I come over for a day? :)

Some children just never seem to put on any weight despite the vast quantity of food they eat.

Others, like me, only have to walk past a cake shop and put on weight.

Don't worry about it. If your children were hungry you would know. If they didn't eat enough, you would know. Carry on as you are.

WitchWay · 18/05/2014 22:54

Odd that she said "more crap" not "more food" or "more stodge"

Your food sounds great. Her attitude is weird.

hedgetrimmer · 18/05/2014 22:55

It was home made mayo, usually i use shop bought but i had ran out so had to make some,it was really easy, got the recipe for the mayo and the coleslaw from good food,i get most recipes from there.

I get dd weighed at the hospital...

we are there for other things, weight and height come as part of the initial check.

oh and yes her ideas are weird.
