Aibu to be slightly worried...

....just read the telegraph and it seems very shortly we will be forced to put a black box in your car by the insurance companies and it wouldn't just be the new cars. I can understand why they want to do it but that means the powers that be will know where you are driving, your routes, how your break, speed etc. (mind you they be bored with my journeys back and forth). I am (I hope) a careful driver but I'm very worried that this spy in the car is going through the back door. There is nothing on the telegraph website. Aibu to worry about who would hold this data and why is it being allowed.

Can you link?

It does sound rather intrusive, if it's compulsory.

I haven't read the a article but tbh if you are carrying a mobile phone the powers that be can already pretty much track your every move should they wish.

I agree, quite worrying. The argument will be that you don't have to have to have it, but eventually insurance companies will not accept you without it, or just at a much higher premium.

I wonder how it would be regulated? What if you switch it off? With mobiles you turn off tracking.

We are all constantly monitored anyway with CCTV in terms of location, but not in terms of speed in between cameras (except average speed tracking). Unfortunately I can see this becoming a reality.

One of the comments on the article brings up the subject of hacking the data - a very valid concern I'd say.

These are going to be fitted as standard across the EU.

I don't believe that "they are to find crashed cars", it will be to do with drug dealing, weaponry movements, people trafficking, IMO.

It's good news for younger drivers, in some ways.

I can't help feeling that insurance companies should be made to justify their premiums and profit capped.

It's a legal requirement, public transport isn't an option, we can't keep horses in our back gardens any more, so the public should be supported by the Government, to not be taken advantage of.

Although the Civil Liberty and Privicy points are valid, we have to apprieciate how safe it is, living in the UK.

Apparently the EU ECall is for emergencies only though so I have no issues with that.

I think this is ridiculous though.

The black box in my HGV monitors: speed, position, gear, revs, fuel flow and consumption, braking, exhaust brake, seatbelt, horn (especially at night). There are also options to check alcohol, blink rate, lane discipline, forward and side separation distance, and blood oxygen.
