Friend on the dreaded Facebook shared a post saying '8 year olds now have computers and ipads, when I was 8 I had crayons and an imagination. Share if you agree'....
Well first of all, agree with what? That 20 years ago children had crayons and that now (due to the advancement of technology) many have ipads - yup I would agree that's an accurate statement, but so?
Are having an ipad and having an imagination mutually exclusive? I don't think so. I think that used in the right way, they can stimulate the imagination, engage children and aid development.
Most children I know that have ipads (admittedly not many) also have crayons, and use them.
Why does children using technology have to be a bad thing?
So wibu to have said 'yeah, so' to my friends post?

I loved my sega mega drive, so much better than the bloody spectrum.

Both are needed. With pencils and paper what you can create is limited to 2D, with lego it is limited to 3D and the laws of physics.
With Minecraft there is no limit. As just one example. My DD has a floating sky hotel that she has created in her minecraft, I has a marble and gold reception area, every bedroom has a the most fabulous bathroom I have ever seen.

What I find annoying about about these kind of FB posts is that it only makes you look rude to respond or challenge inaccurate/intemperate/inane posts so we mostly stay silent but if I was in a RL conversation with these people either I'd challenge them or more likely they would keep their idiocy to themselves.

I'd like to point out that we all have opinions.

You might see it on FB too! Wink

I think every generation looks at the next generation and feels a certain amount of sadness over the loss of certain things. But, it's not all as bad as some people think it is (depending on their view and what kind of parent they are/ are around)

My kids have lego, crayons, an xbox, a tablet each, football and goal in the garden, scooters which they play outside with their friends on, they can fish and watch too much wrestling on tv. My dp is 35 next month and had a games console when he was 9, things haven't changed that quickly!

I do agree that these posts on fb are bloody annoying and mostly stupid or pointless.
