to spend my birthday money in IKEA?

Apparently I am, as birthday money is to treat myself to "something nice". GM has gifted me some money and I intend to buy a couple of nice things in IKEA however my DM thinks this is Hmm and I shouldnt buy stuff for "the house" and instead buy myself a treat like perfume or jewellry (which I dont need).

YANBU. I see where she's coming from but ideas of treats differ wildly.

PeanutButterAndMarmite · 18/05/2014 08:57

YANBU , I bought myself a new set of crockery in ikea with my birthday last year, I still get satisfaction at every meal seeing everything nice and matched without a chip in sight. No one else in the house "gets" this.

Busymumto3dc · 18/05/2014 08:58

Yanbu

I do things like this, two years ago I spent my Christmas money on new bunk beds for the dc

I wanted to move them into the same bedroom so I could prepare for baby and it would have taken me a while to save a lump sum like that

BrokenToeOuch · 18/05/2014 08:58

Just buy what you want. And dont tell her. Or if she asks, just say perfume.

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 18/05/2014 08:59

Ive wanted the mint green "hospital" style trolley since they introduced it, but at £50 its quite pricey for what it is so I see it as a treat.

I bought expedit with mine so YANBU.

PeanutButterAndMarmite · 18/05/2014 09:01

Oh yes, the kitchen trolley thing (although it would work in the bathroom too), I really like them!

FusilliJerry · 18/05/2014 09:02

For my recent birthday money, I bought a top for myself, a portable barbeque for when we go on holiday soon, a new lawn edger to motivate me into digging vegetable patches and fabric to make the dd's dresses for an upcoming wedding. YANBU, I too would relish the chance to have spare money to spend in ikea!

PrincessBabyCat · 18/05/2014 09:03

This is why I give gift cards to specific places for these sorts of things. :)

I personally get irritated/disappointed when I give someone money to get themselves a treat and they do something boring with it. Birthday money should be spent on fun things for the birthday person as a treat, not on bills and stuff that you'd buy with your own paychecks, imho.

That said, she gave you a gift and its yours to do as you like with it. If she wanted you to get a perfume or jewelry, she should have gotten you a specific gift card to somewhere that sells stuff like that.

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 18/05/2014 09:03

Im pregnant so Im planning on putting it in the bedroom for the baby stuff like nappies and wipes and spare swaddling sheets. Matches colour wise perfectly too.

Ooh yes, I love the green trolley and that would be a treat for me as it's not a "necessary" piece of furniture.

If I could go treat shopping at IKEA I think I'd get the faux sheepskin throw, some nice woven storage and a few sets of sheets... Also the red step stool... And some hooks for the kids to hang their coats on....

Um, right, back to you. No, yanbu.

FusilliJerry · 18/05/2014 09:03

Have you seen these? I have no room/need,(or money to buy) but I love it!

Oh but Princess I wont be bored at all going and buying, building, stocking and just gazing at it.

I bought a gas bbq, fence paint and a bird table with my birthday money. DP and DM were a bit Hmm that I didn't spend the money on 'myself' but now my garden looks exactly how I want it for the summer. Best use of the money ever.

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 18/05/2014 09:05

Ooh Fusilli that is nice!

Ooh bed sheets - might treat myself to some new bedlinen too.

we went to IKEA last week. IRL that desk is quite flimsy and disappointing ...which is a shame as I wanted it too. I am work I g up a reason to justify a kitchen trolley though ....

mummytowillow · 18/05/2014 09:09

Do what you want with your money! I always ask for house things for Xmas etc.

I got a steam cleaner once, I love it (even if I've snapped the handle). Last year I got a cupcake carrier Wink

Enjoy!

FusilliJerry · 18/05/2014 09:16

Oh well, I can just look and pretend! Birthday treats for one person are not always the same for another, are they? I don't have much spare money, so spending on something that makes my home/garden more how I like them is good for me. (And I intend to try out the new barbeque today!)

Revengeofthechocolatebunny · 18/05/2014 09:33

It's your money, spend it how exactly you like! :)

I haven't had a birthday gift for 5 years, so definitely do with it what you will!

TheFantasticMrsFox · 18/05/2014 10:17

YANBU. I too would spend birthday money in IKEA. I would buy lovely cushions and throws, some bizarre kitchen implements I didn't know I needed and some stuff from the paper section :)
As a PP said, just tell your DM you bought perfume if she is nosy enough to ask :o

NewShoesTwoShoes · 18/05/2014 10:19

YANBU!
Only this morning I was wondering if I could ask for a "trip to IKEA" as my birthday present. Planning to be buying storage (and maybe a small present for me!) but the main treat would be someone watching the kids so I can browse in peace... (I love the green kitchen trolley too)

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 18/05/2014 11:19

Im here and have stopped for a cursory breakfast with DD (2.5). Yum!

That beureau desk thingy seems really nice had a little play with it. Shame I have no need for it or not in a spendy way

Shit, well then almost every birthday and Christmas present I've had for the last 15 years has been invalid. I'm still gradually replacing the cheapo/charity shop/skip-salvaged furniture, crockery and fixtures that I had when I bought my first house as a skint postgrad.

Do I want perfume? No, not really. Do I want a lampshade which isn't made of age-yellowed paper with a tear down one side from where I caught it with the end of a roller blind a decade ago? Yes please, that would be lovely!

Sandthorn · 18/05/2014 11:41

Ps: get what will give you pleasure, not what somebody else thinks should give you pleasure.
