to expect a 39 y/o dh to know you don't eat the skin of an avacado

NC but regular. Left ds and dh with dinner last night, I didn't prep the avacado as I didn't want it to go brown but left a note that the two ripe avacadoes were to go with it.

I find out this morning that dinner was had, but the avadoes weren't good as the skin was really tough and difficult to chew...

what do you mean you don't eat the skin

Mrssodapop · 17/05/2014 20:45

Mary are you having an affair with my husband? Wink

riskit4abiskit · 17/05/2014 21:35

I only had avacado for the first time four days ago. I had to Google what to do. I didn't know if it was a fruit or veg. Im thirty one!

wheresthelight · 17/05/2014 21:46

I am 34 and have never eaten it or had to prep it so i am afraid I would not know that you don't eat the skin either.

Just because someone has it without skin doesn't mean they automatically know that you don't ever eat the skin. Potatoes are not
Ally served peeled but then you can have them in a variety of ways with the skin on!

wheresthelight · 17/05/2014 21:47

Poxy phone!! Potatoes are normally...

Feminine · 17/05/2014 21:52

An avocado is an amazingly everyday food.

I'm not surprised you NC opWink

I am baffled how one can get to 8 not knowing what to do with one, let alone an adult!

riskit4abiskit · 17/05/2014 21:57

I dont feel like avocado is an everyday food up north. A pie might be!

We certainly never ate such exotic faire when I was a lass!

Greenandcabbagelooking · 17/05/2014 21:57

My dad didn't know the difference between a clove of garlic and a bulb. He put a bulb of garlic (all peeled and chopped, but still...) in a spaghetti bolognese.

It was very garlicky..

Shockers · 17/05/2014 22:01

At an Afro Caribbean restaurant one Christmas eve, I was enjoying the fruit salad whilst discussing table arrangements for the following day with my best friend. I told her that I would be plundering the ivy in my own garden and sneaking down the road to the holly hedge as was tradition on Christmas eve.
"Have you got secateurs?" she asked.
Me, rooting through the fruit salad, "Erm, not sure... what do they look like?"

In my defence (and your DH's) it's not logic, it's general knowledge.

Feminine · 17/05/2014 22:02

I don't agree riskit Grin

Maybe when you were a girl? I don't know your age.

I'm 43 this year, I've been eating them for as long as I can remember!

I'm positive it is not a North/South divide! Wink

OneLittleToddleTerror · 17/05/2014 22:05

It is obvious you don't eat the skin if you have seen one. It is very common to see them in salads and sandwiches. Though I do live in the south east and often buys my lunch in pret if that makes a difference (riskit says it's not so up north).

That skin is so waxy it's like saying you think you ought to eat an orange peel.

Besides I would assume its a common item in OP family. Or she wouldn't have it at home.

AppleSnow · 17/05/2014 22:06

Absolutely hilarious - made me laugh.

mumteedum · 17/05/2014 22:13

Op...you're not the wife of the 'fatball' eating husband are you? Not surprising you nc if so.

When pregnant with DS, I sent my 30 year old (now x)h to the shop to get me an avocado, as it was one of the few foods I could keep down.

He returned with a mango.

Mildly clueless, perhaps?

DustWitch · 17/05/2014 22:57

One of my closest friends, on spotting an avocado in my kitchen exclaimed "What the fuck is that?! " in a genuinely confused and astonished way. She had honestly never seen one. This was just a couple of years ago. She told me I was really posh to be eating stuff like that Grin

Oh and we live down south.

DustWitch · 17/05/2014 23:10

Also, we had a recent discussion at work as to whether kiwi skins are edible after witnessing a colleague eat one whole, hairy skin and all. I've never even considered eating the skin but apparently some people do Confused

WitchWay · 17/05/2014 23:15

Does it really matter whether or not the skin ought to be removed before eating?

Sometimes when I'm eating a tomato or an apple, I find the skin unpalatable & guess what? I don't eat it

Why the bloody hell did they eat the skin if it wasn't very nice? Confused

BrokenToeOuch · 17/05/2014 23:23

Dust, I eat kiwi skin! As does one of my DDs - delicious!

my neighbour once called round, picked up a kiwi from my fruit bowl, and said "gosh, what hairy potatoes"! Grin Grin

LettertoHerms · 18/05/2014 02:31

My dear dad cannot, despite many attempts at teaching, tell the difference between a cucumber and a courgette.

He has to come find one of us before making dinner, or he might end up cooking a cucumber (again). Grin

PotatoPolly · 18/05/2014 02:59

I eat kiwi skin! my dreadful knife skills mean I cut half the fruit off if I try to peel it!

Billygoats · 18/05/2014 03:01

I've only ever tried avocado once and that was abroad. It was pretty horrendous in my opinion. So I doubt it will be an everyday item in my fruit bowl as dd gets older.

I'm 24 so wasn't a 'girl' too long ago I guess ad certainly never an avocado did enter into our house.

Despite all this I'm pretty confident (if I ever decided to like the stuff) I wouldn't serve it with the skin on, they are pretty tough looking things.
