To want to change our first dance?

quellerosiel · 15/05/2014 19:03

So DF and I were 99.9% decided on having 'Rule the World' by Take That as our first dance at our wedding. We love that song and the lyrics are so touching... but I am so gutted to hear about Gary Barlow and just don't want to be associated with or seen to be endorsing that nastiness.

Am I over thinking this? DF thinks I might be was just curious to have other opinions.

First time posting in this section so be gentle with me! internet hugs to the lovely people of MN!

Because he's (legally) not paid more tax than he had to?

Seriously?

I do not understand people.

BrokenToeOuch · 15/05/2014 19:06

Yabu. It's just a song Confused
And by all accounts, he doesn't appear to have broken any laws. Specifically what nastiness do you not want to be endorsing?

meditrina · 15/05/2014 19:07

If you've gone off the song, have another. It doesn't matter whether your reason is good, bad or weird - people change their minds about all sorts of things all the tie.

It's one dance, one bit of one party. In the long run, it's not that important.

Do you have any other "our" songs?

grocklebox · 15/05/2014 19:11

theres a wedding section you know, and a chat one.

a song is just a song. who chooses the songs they like based on the financial set up of the artistes? Hmm Its just the usual nonsensical boy band dull song.

softlysoftly · 15/05/2014 19:14

Well change it if you want but "nastiness" really?

Get a grip

60sname · 15/05/2014 19:14

I can guarantee you that anyone who has made a song you and more than two other guests will have heard of will be able to employ an accountant to ensure they do not pay more tax than they have to. Gary's affairs just happen to be in the spotlight this week.

CoffeeTea103 · 15/05/2014 19:15

Nobody is going to give you a medal for that. It's just a song. Hmm

Tinkerball · 15/05/2014 19:19

Nastiness?? What do you mean?

whois · 15/05/2014 19:20

softlysoftly says it perfectly.

Pretty much every single high net worth individual will be engaged in LEGAL activities to minimise their tax liability, not just GB.

londonrach · 15/05/2014 19:24

It's a song. Sorry but if that's all you gave to worry about. For the record dh and I didn't gave any dance as our 12 century church flagstones were not good for dancing....but my mum had breast cancer at the time and that more important than a dance. There's not a photo of my grandparents wedding and they were married for most 70 years..... Please just enjoy your wedding. It's going to be amazing day, just enjoy it. X

LiberalLibertine · 15/05/2014 19:30

Oh Lord, YABU to be bothered about his tax situation.

YANBU to fancy a different song.

Welcome to mumsnet :)

specialsubject · 15/05/2014 19:34

when is the wedding?

if it is next week, expect giggles and piss-taking about this.

if it is in six months, people will probably have forgotten.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 15/05/2014 19:37

Regardless of the tax situation it's a shit song

Deathraystare · 15/05/2014 19:44

"nastiness??"

Ok he fiddled his taxes, he didn't (as far as I know) abuse babies and cut them into bits.....

For all you know plenty of your guests may have done a bit of tax fiddling, or paid cash to mobile hairdressers/diy men etc and so contributing to their 'crime'.

I am not a Take That fan either.

Berryglitter · 15/05/2014 19:50

Get a grip, it's a song. If you don't like it now then change it. If you do still love it keep it.

If your friends are that shallow that they'll titter about your song choice on such a special day, change them!

60sname · 15/05/2014 19:51

Dammit I almost forgot I should be thinking of Jarvis Cocker's finances when gliding round the dance floor with my new husband in a couple of weeks Grin

MarysDressSways1 · 15/05/2014 19:52

Nastiness?? He didn't break any laws. He probably just trusted an accountant or advisor and therefore is guilty of being naive and a bit silly. You're being a bit odd to be honest.

CuriosityCola · 15/05/2014 19:53

I'm a take that fan and still think its not a good song choice. Yabu to be worried about his financial affairs.

There are loads of other good songs out there.

(Btw, was at a wedding recently with hey ho by the lumineers as the second song. Great for getting everyone on the dance floor!)

LineRunner · 15/05/2014 19:55

Just play 'Shine' and think of the boys polishing their krugerands.

JamJimJam · 15/05/2014 19:58

You're being ridiculous, they haven't been outed as axe murderers.

CarryOnDancing · 15/05/2014 20:00

When I read your OP I got panicked thinking he had cheated on his poor wife or something but you think taxes are nastiness?
Every single person with an accountant does the exact same thing.

I REALLY doubt your guests are going to be tutting around the dance floor. YABU to care and YABVU to think any of your guests would.

LilacRoses · 15/05/2014 20:05

Up to you OP but crikey flipping tax is a nightmare to understand. I'm not saying he did the right thing, clearly he didn't. He trusted an accountant that told him what he was doing was ok but now apparently it isn't. I don't get the outrage at all. We are trying to do something very mundane tax wise at the mo (give up child benefit) and the ensuing tax muddle has been so complicated that even the person on the phone from HRMC admitted he wasn't sure what was what!

BigFatGoalie · 15/05/2014 21:17

The only thing YABU about is your song choice.
Listen to John Legend's "All of Me".
Then pick it as your first dance song.
Dilemma solved.
