To take my almost 3 year old with me when I go to the hairdressers?

I have not had a haircut since August and have terrible 90's curtains where the fringe I had last year has grown out. It's getting way too long and I can't stand the sight of how frumpy and unkempt I look. I've also been having a bit of a tough time recently so really want to cheer myself up. However, as a single mum to an almost 3 year DD with friends who work during the day and no family support nearby, childcare is a bit of an issue. SO, I have been contemplating making an appointment and taking my DD with me.

Am I being immensely unreasonable to think this is totally unfeasible and not a good idea? Thanks for listening

if its just for a haircut then go for it. Take snacks and a drink and a couple of toys for her to keep her occupied.

FleurDeHeadLys · 14/05/2014 21:27

YABU.

Look for a mobile hairdresser instead. Your DD can potter about in her own house and you won't need to worry about other customers.

MrsMargoLeadbetter · 14/05/2014 21:27

What about a home hairdresser? Can be done when DD is in bed? Probably cheaper too.

Bakersbum · 14/05/2014 21:29

Do it, I took my 3 year old with me recently and he behaved impeccably. I was dreading it, but took a new magazine, snacks and a few little toys to keep him occupied. Good luck!

ilovepowerhoop · 14/05/2014 21:30

Ask them what their quietest day is and book that day. My old hairdressers had a toy corner so must be used to kids coming in

arethereanyleftatall · 14/05/2014 21:32

The thing is that your treat could go tits up if your 3 yr old isn't in the right mood.
I echo others saying mobile hairdresser once your dd is in bed. Cheaper too.

Pixel · 14/05/2014 21:34

I've always taken dd. She just used to sit on the sofa and look at her books. Ds had to stay in his buggy and be bribed with food but he still never bothered anyone else.
But then I was going to the local hairdresser who already knew me before I had dcs. Not sure I would turn up at one of those trendy places with kids in tow.

AryaOfHouseSnark · 14/05/2014 21:34

What sort of toddler is she ? I know some young dc that will happily eat breadsticks, sit nicely and do some colouring in.

My Dts are nothing like that, they would cause chaos and I would rather cut my own hair than endure the hell of them in a hairdressers.

Mobile hairdresser is a good idea.

RoaringTiger · 14/05/2014 21:35

I always take my kiddies with me (3 year old and a 6 year old) always have done from them both being born. I only have a dry trim though

Spottybra · 14/05/2014 21:36

So long as you won't be hours having a colour, take her. How else will she learn how to behave appropriately in different social settings?

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 14/05/2014 21:39

I often take my two with me, have done since they were babies. They're 5 and 7 and they have their hair cut now too. They are used to it and they know how to behave themselves.

jasmine31 · 14/05/2014 21:39

yeah, do it! I did the same this morning (but with an almost 2yr old). Took loads of snacks, couple of toys, pile of new library books. Tried to tire her out first so she was happy enough sitting in the buggy. Hairdressers was quiet and although it wasn't exactly relaxing I was so glad to get a much overdue haircut!

LemonBreeland · 14/05/2014 21:40

I have not had a haircut in the last 10 years where I did not have a baby or toddler sitting in a pushchair next to me. They have always been fine.

I am looking forward to DD starting nursery so I can get some peace though.

NeverendingPotato · 14/05/2014 21:40

I always took my ds! Never thought of not doing so. Like Spottybra said, if they don't experience those situations they aren't going to learn appropriate behaviour.

See, you would be getting a haircut and being a good mum at the same time!

WorraLiberty · 14/05/2014 21:43

I don't know if YABU or not because only you know how your child is likely to cope, but as she's not even 3yrs old I would check with the hairdresser when booking.

I don't recommend giving your child food unless she's actually hungry though.

Much better not to get her into that sort of habit. Toys/crayons/colouring books and a far better way to keep her occupied.

HennaFlare · 14/05/2014 21:48

I take all 3 of mine every time (6,5 and 2). They look at the fish tank, play with something they've brought, read a book, chat... I wouldn't get a sitter for a haircut!! Maybe your hairdressers is a lot posher than mine, but I've never felt like they were out of place.

Aeroflotgirl · 14/05/2014 21:50

It depends what your child us like, fine if she is likely to sit still and be entertained by books and crayons, but if she is an explorer and likely not to sit still, than get a mobile hairdresser. I have one she is fab, she works in a salon, and also takes clients for extra money, so I get a salon cut for £15

AryaOfHouseSnark · 14/05/2014 21:51

Oh so it's just me then Grin.

ExcuseTypos · 14/05/2014 21:52

If you think she will beable to sit quietly for an hour then go for it. I never took mine but if I'd had to, I know they would have behaved well at that age.

NeverendingPotato · 14/05/2014 21:56

Arya Well that was ds1. Ds2 would be, er, unmanageable!

WaitMonkey · 14/05/2014 22:01

Could you try a mobile hairdresser ? I think to be honest it totally depends on your dd. I'm a SAHM. I very rarely get a break without dc. I silently sigh if I take a very rare trip to the hairdressers and there are noisy dc who are fed up and running round. Quiet one's are fine. If your sure she won't be a problem then take her. But think about a mobile option.

NotCitrus · 14/05/2014 22:08

I ask when my local one would be willing to give it a go with 2yo in tow - often they tell me to come in and if dd kicks off, they should be able to scrape up another member of staff soon to help, or if desperate, squeeze me in later.
Has worked ok, with her either sleeping or happily misting all the chair legs with water (they gave her the mister, no other customers about!)

Artandco · 14/05/2014 22:09

I do. Ds2 is almost 3 years also and I took to hair appointment last week.Lasted 2 hours. He loved it. Both have been since babies.

I booked him in for a cut also so first 20 mins they washed and cut his hair next to me. Then they gave him loads of strawberries and biscuits which he happily sat in swivel chair with. Then he watched and 'helped' hairdresser ie hold hair brush when not being used and pass back. Then drew some pictures, chatted etc.

He's asked for another hair cut for his birthday!

Lioninthesun · 14/05/2014 22:15

Do it! I have had a grand total of 2 haircuts since DD was born (2.9 so similar to you) and have booked another for next month. She found the whole thing fascinating last time and sat on my lap really well. This time I think I will get her a cut with me, so hopefully then she will be entertained for a while. It helps that she is a bit of a magnet for attention and usually makes off with a load of biscuits kindly people offer her Grin

gamescompendium · 14/05/2014 22:16

I always have at least one child with me for a haircut. I go to Toni and Guy (is that trendy, I have no idea, it's not cheap though) and they are fine, all the staff have known the kids since they were wee, they have colouring books and crayons behind reception, I take books and snacks and it's fine. You know your LO, are they likely to run riot or are they generally well behaved for their age if given something to quietly amuse them (worst case scenario download something onto an ipad or your phone for them to watch quile you get your hair cut).
