to not go to GP because I know she will ask me about my weight, when my issue is entirely non weight related?

I know I am overweight (not morbidly) and there is nothing she can say to me that I haven't said to myself.

But it will come up again. Because these things, along with blood pressure, smoking, and smear tests always seem to whenever you quickly visit the GP these days.

What is the point? Is she going to say "the NHS won't treat you for X because your bmi is 30"?

"I'd rather not discuss weight today, thank you"? Works for me, along with "No thank you" if asked to step onto the scales.

Some health issues at not impacted by weight but by diet, so you may be U.

gurningpug · 11/05/2014 21:21

Every time I've spoken to a HE recently they've badgered me about contraception. It seems to be the thing to say to newly postnatal women.

I always refuse to be weighed at the GP.

BuggersMuddle · 11/05/2014 21:22

They are doctors, not gods. I've had some lovely doctors, including some who've said harsh truths for my own good. I've also had some awful doctors ('you have to accept these things will happen as you get older' - I was 30). Do your research, be prepared to challenge and ask for a second opinion.

A good doctor, even if they conclude that you need to lose weight will not just send you away. If your weight if causing other health issues they should offer help to resolve it.

Mintyy · 11/05/2014 21:22

Actually, Monmouth, that is a very good point. There is a female gp at my practice who is way more overweight than me. I could request her and see what happens ...

I was asked about smoking actually

lunar1 · 11/05/2014 21:27

I had a dr like this, I changed practice. Dh (a dr himself) felt that his complete obsession with weight made him a bad dr and likely to miss things that needed treating because he was so extreme.

Obviously weight affects many things but I honestly thing if I went to him because my hand got chopped off he would say, well ideally your bmi should be...

MerryInthechelseahotel · 11/05/2014 21:36

If the GP says anything about weight just give her/him a look

Janethegirl · 11/05/2014 21:46

It's the blood pressure thing with me, it's always too high when they measure it, but fine when I check it or when work checks it. It really pisses me off though.

MammaTJ · 11/05/2014 21:49

I swear if my head fell off the doctors would say it was because I am fat.

MajesticWhine · 11/05/2014 21:52

Some GP practices have a deal where they actually get paid for covering certain topics in a consultation. eg weight, smoking. Just nod and smile and then return to the reason that you went.

Janethegirl · 11/05/2014 21:53

Mamma that's awful, totally irrelevant. I tend to avoid GPs unless absolutely necessary because of their judgemental tendencies.

macdoodle · 11/05/2014 22:00

Really majesticwine? You work as a GP or in the admin/finance side of a practice, or maybe a medical accountant, no? for the DOH then ? No? Then what makes you think you have the fecking foggiest notion of the very complex income streams for GP funding. Such that we employ 2 expensive managers, numerous admin and nursing staff and a medical accountant.
Or did the daily mail spin tell you so.

MajesticWhine · 11/05/2014 22:33

Wow macdoodle that's a strong reaction. I have been given this information from a friend who is a GP, and it wasn't just mentioned in passing, it was given in some detail.

Owllady · 11/05/2014 22:42

I wonder if the go ever asks if people are prone to temper tantrums Wink

Mintyy · 11/05/2014 22:45

I think its fairly common knowledge that some gp funding is target related?

I smoke 10-15 cigarettes a week. When I go to the GP/doctor, the following conversation often follows.

Them: "You should try and quit. We can provide information"

Me: "I know. Thanks."

When I had gained half a stone between appointments, they told me.

Didn't/Doesn't sent me into paroxysms of rage about their judgmental attitude, these things are just facts. If you choose to get upset and shoot yourself in the foot by not looking for treatment., I don't see what anyone else can do for you.

TheFairyCaravan · 11/05/2014 23:24

My GP always tells me I have abnormally skinny legs.
It doesn't matter what I go for the size of my legs are brought into the consultation! A couple of weeks ago she was mid smear and suddenly said 'oooh Fairy, your legs are skinny! I don't know when I last saw such skinny legs!'

PicandMinx · 11/05/2014 23:32

If the GP asks you to jump on the scales, or offers a smear or blood pressure test, or talks about anything else, just smile and say no thanks to all of them!

Remind your GP that you have 10 minutes to discuss the issue in hand and that you do not want to waste any second of your consultation talking about un-related issues.

FYI GPs get paid for:-

weighing you - recording your BMI
taking your BP
smear test
giving up smoking advice
giving up alcohol
blood tests

Google QOF.

MMcanny · 11/05/2014 23:36

Go to the fattest GP in the practice, mine's huge - I don't think she'd dare mention anyone's weight.

PenelopeKeeling · 11/05/2014 23:38

If you need to go to the GP, you should go. If she does mention it, surely she will be brief? They don't have much time in appointments and would surely rather talk about the reason you're there than generic weight advice...

If she does say something, just say thanks for the advice and move swiftly on to the reason for you being there.

kinsorange · 11/05/2014 23:45

Surely she couldnt not treat you for something not weight related?

YABU for not going to the doctor if you need to go. That is not keeping yourself safe.
I can understand why you wouldnt want to go though.
