The phrase 'dirty beer'

Saffra · 10/05/2014 22:34

DH comes home after a couple of beers with friends. Comes and says goodnight to 2.5 yr old dd, and says 'daddy's been drinking dirty beer tonight'. Just in a jokey way. But I don't think it's great to say this to young children. AIBU?

Can I just ask why you don't think it's okay to say to children?

CoffeeTea103 · 10/05/2014 22:36

I don't get what's bad about it?

Sirzy · 10/05/2014 22:36

whats the problem supposed to be?

SauvignonBlanche · 10/05/2014 22:38
Confused
BridgetBardotte · 10/05/2014 22:38

Is it that you're worried about presenting alcohol as something really bad and wrong, and therefore making it more desirable?...

peacegardens · 10/05/2014 22:39

Do people still say this? Grin I remember it from the 1980s. Not sure it's a bad thing though

Knakard · 10/05/2014 22:39

It's mucky beer and wobbly wine in this house.. Any better for you? Wink

tigerdriverII · 10/05/2014 22:39

Beer makes your breath smell. So it is a bit dirty smelling. Why wouldn't you say it.

WorraLiberty · 10/05/2014 22:39
BridgetBardotte · 10/05/2014 22:40

Knakard, I love the wobbly wine Grin

Saffra · 10/05/2014 22:41

In my mind, it kind of says that alcohol is naughty but it's ok for daddy to be drinking it.

I've heard DH's family say the phrase quite a bit in the company of my nephew when he was younger too (now 5).

Perhaps I'm being a bit OTT, I'm not sure really. But then, I'm very careful about the language I use in front of DD.

I absolutely hate the phrase but I'm not sure why . Maybe it's simplifying things too much.

AgentZigzag · 10/05/2014 22:41

Did he mean it in a 'daddy's been out drinking that nasty dirty old beer' and just joking with her?

If he did it sounds fine to me, unless 'dirty beer' has another meaning I don't know about

Dreamofthe90sisAliveinPortland · 10/05/2014 22:42

Is this a euphemism for some kind of amazing new drug?

UncleT · 10/05/2014 22:42

Never even heard that before, ever. Just sounds a bit stupid, to be honest.

Saffra · 10/05/2014 22:42

So many cross posting! Sorry, said dd needed the toilet!

RPopz · 10/05/2014 22:43

It was always mucky beer when I was a nipper! Wink

AgentZigzag · 10/05/2014 22:43

If he does mean it like that, surely it's better than him saying 'daddy's been out drinking that amazingly awesome beer tonight'.

Would she really understand the ins/outs of alcohol and it being good and bad at the same time?

PinkSquash · 10/05/2014 22:44

I cannot possibly see the problem with it? Never heard of it called that before

peacegardens · 10/05/2014 22:45

Wine is indeed wobbly Grin

WorraLiberty · 10/05/2014 22:46

He probably said it to apologise for the smell on his breath

Saffra · 10/05/2014 22:46

Not, not a new wonder drug. And yes , apparently the phrase is still used! And just for normal beer (as in lager).

In my mind, it kind of says that alcohol is naughty but it's ok for daddy to be drinking it.

Well that makes sense

It would be naughty for a child to drink it, and perfectly ok for daddy to drink it.

grocklebox · 10/05/2014 22:48

Shes 2. Who gives a fuck what he says about beer? TWO.

Saffra · 10/05/2014 22:51

No, she definitely doesn't understand the ins and outs of alcohol! I do drink too, but I don't attach any good/bad thing to it. As far as she's concerned, it's just a drink.

Perhaps it's me then!

DH and I have had very different upbringings - his parents are very relaxed about alcohol but mine aren't.

Don't know, just don't like the phrase... Can't help it!
