To think that veg that has 'gone a bit soft' is the POINT of stews?

nomorequotes · 10/05/2014 14:29

We are properly skint at the moment so though the children are getting their 5 a day served to them even if they don't always eat it we are upkeeping the age-old British tradition of making a stew/roast and involving as many veggies as we can. DH is making the stew today and has refused to add a handful of cherry tomatoes that 'are a little bit soft' and one or two of which the skin has separated a bit. I think this is absurd! They are fine to go in a stew if not go in a salad. He is now complaining about a couple of courgettes I found in the fridge, probably a week old because they too are 'a bit soft'

Surely all of this adds to our veg for the day and should be used up!

I thought the point of stews was to use up all those bits n pieces you had lying around? If we were having a roast I would have cut it all up and roasted it too!

Please tell me he is BU and I am right!

I got the joke!

MinesAPintOfTea · 10/05/2014 17:31

I would have fried or blitzed into a ragu the tomatoes and r Courgette because to my mind they aren't stew veg. Wouldn't have chucked them though.

FunkyBoldRibena · 10/05/2014 17:38

I put anything and everything in soups and stews; mainly because I grow them and am buggered if I will throw it away after all that hard work.

Try Nigella's Happiness soup for courgette in soups...wholly delightful.

nomorequotes · 10/05/2014 17:45

I really want to start growing veggies. We need to sort the garden out a bit first though!

There was no joke, it was a bitchy comment towards me for being skint and nothing more.

Anything can go into anything, in my book. Tradition be damned :D

Fullpleatherjacket · 10/05/2014 17:55

YANBU.

You should see what goes into veg curry in this house Grin

cricketpitch · 10/05/2014 17:56

Don't think the comment was meant to be bitchy. Something I might say.....

As in: I'm the sort of person who thinks that reaching for the tv remote is "stretching" and walking to the fridge counts as exercise!

squoosh · 10/05/2014 18:01

It wasn't a bitchy comment about your being broke, it was meant as a joke.

nomorequotes · 10/05/2014 18:09

Well exactly Cricket to say 'I'm the sort of person who thinks reaching for the remote is "stretching"' is poking fun at yourself for being a bit lazy.

To say it about someone else is merely distasteful.

If it was a joke, it was neither funny nor tasteful.

Nomama · 11/05/2014 17:16

But was the stew taste full?

nomorequotes · 11/05/2014 17:26

Was yummy

One of the favourite meals here is Wrinkly Vegetable Soup. All the carrots, parsnips, tomatoes etc which have gone soft and wrinkly, cooked with a bit of stock and some lentils or beans. Wholemeal bread, a bit of cheese. Yum.

Tell your DH he's BVU Smile

Revengeofthechocolatebunny · 11/05/2014 18:28

Soft wrinkly veg = stew

too many courgettes? Make Chocolate Cake with them. You cannot tell there's courgette in it and it is deliciously moist, gooey and more-ish.

We have lamb stew tonight. I guessed how much pearl barley should go in it... think I'll be serving slices it's so thick! Grin

limitedperiodonly · 11/05/2014 18:30

Oh God, I was going to leave this but you are dragging it up again.

If we're playing Top Trumps, I'm on a budget, as are many others. You're not fucking unique.

You asked if it would work. I said one would probably work but not the other. And then you got all precious on my arse.

I realise now that you were asking for a pat on the back.

Being on a budget doesn't mean chucking things in willy-nilly. Or chucking things in that are mouldy, which other people recommended. WTF? I find the idea that you would add crap stuff and scrape off mould depressing and very insulting.

It might be a necessity but it's not a badge of courage and shame on the people who've claimed it is.

Courgettes in stews are slimy. You're trying to encourage your children to eat vegetables. IME they put people off. As does the inappropriate deployment of sweetcorn Wink.

I am not surprised you claim it was yummy though. You would, wouldn't you?

I could give you my recipe for sauteed sliced courgettes, tomatoes and onions and a touch of garlic - all past their best.

But since you've been so precious I'll keep it to myself and my budget family. Plus the secret of the cheap tired asparagus.

CailinDana · 11/05/2014 18:40

I think if you're not the one cooking, then butt out, sorry. I would be well fucked off if DH stood over my shoulder ordering me to put things into a dish I was cooking.

FindoGask · 11/05/2014 18:42

In any case, tomatoes are supposed to be a bit soft! Otherwise they're not ripe enough.

FindoGask · 11/05/2014 18:43

btw, "yummy" only makes me shudder if it's teamed with "mummy".

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 11/05/2014 18:55

I make romany vegetable soup.... cos everything thats roaming around the fridge goes in it Grin any leftovers are fair game.

FeegleFion · 11/05/2014 19:02

Don't ask if YABU if you're gonny get arsey when some say you are.

FWIW - I'd have put the veg into the pot but I wouldn't have bit the head off *Limited for having a bit of banter. You sound a wee bit 'veggie unhinged'. Confused

nomorequotes · 11/05/2014 19:12

why on earth would someone elses stew ingredients (mouldy or otherwise) 'insult' you.

There are some unhinged people on this thread but I'm certainly not one of them.

FWIW my family (kids and all) love sweetcorn in anything, it is sweet-corn for goodness sake! Whats not to love?

OP posts:
FeegleFion · 11/05/2014 19:23

That's fab, long may you all eat sweetcorn, but don't get arsey if you're posting on AIBU and not everyone shares your opinion. Chat might well be a consideration for future threads if you don't want anyone to disagree with you.

You are coming across as a very angry woman. It's hard to grasp the intent of the written word and you only wish to believe someone was having a go at your circumstances rather than believe they may be having banter.

Who cares? The veg went in and most agreed you weren't being unreasonable.

nomorequotes · 11/05/2014 19:25

I see quite a lot of 'poor bashing' on this forum actually and I will continue to comment on it, as I see fit regardless of whether I started the thread or not.

I added the veg, the stew was yummy and there is very little point in this negativity.

OP posts:
TalisaMaegyr · 11/05/2014 19:30

nomorequotes you're being really weird. And I'm poor too, so I'm not 'poor bashing' Hmm

gamescompendium · 11/05/2014 19:57

Not poor at all here and we do a pork casserole with courgette in it. It's delicious. Courgette gets added towards the end of the cooking and is not at all slimy.

And, em, what about ratatouille. Courgette in stew - shocking!

OP, YANBU. Everyone, of whatever income, has to do a fridge soup at some point or other unless they want to chuck out loads of slightly sorry veg. Every meal doesn't have to be a perfect combination of flavours, if you cook regularly then you're unlikely to create something hideous even if it's not something you'd serve to guests. Better to serve something that's not exquisite but perfectly servicable that gives everyone the food they need than be a food snob and starve.

nomorequotes · 11/05/2014 20:00

Thanks games

Talisa I fail to see how I am 'being weird' by refusing to be told what to do or rise to the ridiculous insults being bandied round like I am 'an angry woman' or whatever the hell else.

Its courgette in a stew, everyone just needs to chill the fuck out.
