My dd turned 2 at the beginning of april. This morning I got a letter from HV informing me that dd 2 year check will take place next thursday afternoon. I called to rearrange for a monday or wednesday as i work on thursdays, but i was told that they only do 2 year checks on thursdays and i'd have to take a day off. Surely they could fit me in on another day? Thursdays don't work for everyone, surely?

WIBU to cancel the appointment? I'm having problems with work at the mo (different thread) so don't really want to take a day off at short notice and give them more fuel to add to their hate campaign.

Also, is the 2 year checkup a requirement? i don't remember my son having one. (he's almost 6) i don't want to get in trouble for not taking dd. she is having regular checks at the docs anyway for other stuff.

Ridiculous. Of course they can't make you take a day off

TequilaMockingbirdy · 10/05/2014 00:42

I can understand if they can only do thursdays to be honest because that might be the clinic day or whatever.

But of course you're not being unreasonable for not being able to attend.

GiveTwoSheets · 10/05/2014 00:44

Just tell them you can't take time of work end of. They may be able to book you in with GP instead. We don't have the check until they at least 2.5years.

PicandMinx · 10/05/2014 00:58

The checks are not compulsory. Engaging with HV is not compulsory. Asking you to take a day off is totally unreasonable. Cancel the appointment.

YellowTulips · 10/05/2014 00:59

Cancel. It's ridiculous to confine a service to a specific day only.

Yanbu. Carry on with your life, they'll just have to deal with it.

CheshireDing · 10/05/2014 04:46

YANBU.
Dont bother with thecheck unless you have any real concerns, and you could see your GP if you had queries over your child anyway.
Our 2.5 year old didnt have her 1 year or 2 year check as when a friend took their child it sounded like a waste of time anyway and i would also have had to take time off work.
If your child goes to nursery / childminder than they would also be likely to tell you if they thought there were any concerns.
Cancel it.

At ours they supposedly checked language development, play (dd was expected to role play with a doll, build a little tower, "draw" but only really did the first) and social skills. She was weighed and measured. We discussed food, potty training, sleep, safety and free childcare allocation.

But, it was pretty much a waste of time. If you have any concerns about any of the above then maybe less so.

with language development DD was expected to string 2 words together.

DD had her two and a half year check yesterday. The HV made an appointment with me and came to the house. I was sent a questionnaire to complete in advance, rather than then "testing" an uncooperative to older on the spot. At the end she prounounced DD "perfect" and said she was a "delight to see".

So I quite enjoyed it but I wouldn't have said it was necessary. I already knew that Grin
