To stop taking antibiotics mid course?

Dr prescribed co-amoxiclav. Started taking it on Wednesday and felt progressively more nauseous and generally ill on it. Today I spent most if the day curled up in funeral position with nausea and and the smell if good is unbearable I ate a dry slice if toast and that's all I could manage. Dh has been looking after both dc's. Anyway my boss wants me back at work on Monday as they are shirt staffed. There is no way I can go in in that state. Should I just stop taking the antibiotics - btw it's to clear up chronic sinusitis... I know it's really important to finish your full course but I feel so unwell it's killing me

Sinusitis is very difficult to treat. Definitely don't stop taking them without advice. Calling ooh tomorrow would be your best bet.

TheDoctrineOfSnatch · 09/05/2014 23:03

Yes, YABU, go to out of hours or call NHS direct.&

TheDoctrineOfSnatch · 09/05/2014 23:03

...sorry you feel so shit though!

Get your DH to get you some acidophilus - your antibiotics are wiping out all the bacteria in your gut, including the good bacteria. You need a really good probiotic to replace the good bacteria. A good healthfood shop will keep them in the fridge.

If you haven't got a good healthfood shop, then try eating lots of live yoghurt.

Don't stop taking the antibiotics, and tell your boss to get stuffed if you're still poorly. (You may want to be a bit more diplomatic than that Grin)

You need to get rid of this infection before you think about going back to work. Being short staffed is his problem not yours.

Really really don't stop taking the antibiotics. go back to the GP (or talk to a pharmacist) and see if they can give you something to help with the side effects. People stopping antibiotics mid-course is what generates MSRA superbugs. Really sorry you're feeling so bad but you really need to keep taking the pills.

I was recently prescribed Metronidazole which had a similar effect on me as co-amoxyclav is having on you (I was also hallucinating and vomited once too). Rang hospital and they advised me to stop taking it, and see GP straight away. I was then prescribed co-amoxyclav as an alternative and had no side effects at all. The GP said side effects vary from person to person but there is usually an alternative that can be prescribed. If I were you I would go to a walk-in centre or failing that ring out of hrs doctor and try to get a different anti-biotic. Hope you feel better soon.

Not finishing your course of abs could cause the bacteria you're to become resistant to the abs making it harder to treat.

Definitely get advice what to do first (and fingers crossed you feel better soon).

abitofanangrybird · 09/05/2014 23:14

Forgot to say I was advised by GP to take a vitamin b complex tablet each day I was on co-amoxyclav to avoid upset stomach and/or getting thrush. No idea if it made any difference but I didn't suffer with either of those things so might be worth a try.

BIWI · 09/05/2014 23:16

... and the other reason for taking a good probiotic is to prevent thrush

evenafterall · 09/05/2014 23:25

Thanks this helps.

I meant foetal position ( although I do feel like a funeral )

I'll try the out of hours docs and probiotics

Update - spoke to out of hours mdoc and he told me to discontinue the antibiotic now. Have been sick at night and now also have diarrhoea (sorry if TMI)

Sounds like you might be intolerant to that particular one OP. Your doctor really should give you another one.

LUKYMUM · 10/05/2014 09:02

You only continue with antibiotics if they agree with. Finishing the course doesn't help if it makes you more unwell.
Glad to hear you got help OP. An alternative people can do is phone their local pharmacy if they're open.

specialsubject · 10/05/2014 11:25

You only discontinue antibiotics on medical advice - as the OP has been given. You don't stop them if they make you feel ill until you've had that medical advice.

they quite often have side effects.

here's to the out of hours service!

LUKYMUM · 11/05/2014 01:11

If they are making you severely ill?

MrsTerryPratchett · 11/05/2014 01:26

Antibiotics are shit. So are sinus infections. Poor you Sad
