aibu to be angry at not being paid for April

And having to chase it up myself with payroll dept, only to be told that I will have to wait until the end of may unless the HR dept authorise a payment, manager told me last week that HR were aware of the fact that I've not been paid.

Am I also being unreasonable in assuming that HR would know that they have to authorise a late payment and should have done so?

Yanbu, they should be rectifying this immediately.

PunkHedgehog · 09/05/2014 16:49

YANB at all U.

ILoveWooly · 09/05/2014 16:50

Obviously YANBU!

Have you spoken to HR directly?

ExitPursuedByABear · 09/05/2014 16:51

Was it just you? Of course they must issue a payment.

ManWithNoName · 09/05/2014 16:52

This should be rectified immediately and I am very suspicious it happened at the end of the financial year.

HR are aware of it but failed to tell you and then say they cant do anything about it. I would be asking questions about the financial health of the company. Is it only you or has anyone else been affected?

I presume you have a mortgage to pay and other bills. They should advance you the money on an expenses form and then reclaim it from you.

cithkadston · 09/05/2014 17:02

YANBU at all! I hope you get your money soon! I have left a job in the past as they never paid me on time.

CerealMom · 09/05/2014 17:06

Don't take no for an answer. Ask (email) HR for the company's procedure. It should be easy to raise a cheque for this. Unacceptable.

Is payroll done in house or an outside agency - not that it matters.

Plomino · 09/05/2014 17:11

Def not BU . Can completely sympathise as I am still waiting for over 2k in overtime money that I was due to be paid by March , and then was promised in April, and am now getting some of in May, because the person sending the details of the pay run was on holiday and no one else thought to hit the send button . Leaving several hundred officers wel and truly out of pocket . In fact I ate toast for most of March .

Expecting to be paid on time is NOT unreasonable . I didn't do all that work for fun , I have plumbers waiting to be paid .

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 09/05/2014 17:12

There will always be a way of getting money earlier - even if HR have to authorise a cash advance. Don't let them fob you off. Tell them you'll be submitting all your bank charges etc as expenses if they don't!

enterthedragon · 09/05/2014 17:40

National organisation, payroll blame manager, manager states that the system was updated correctly and HR were made aware of it last week.

Yes I have a mortgage, bills etc.

It's not your problem whose fault it was - they can sort that out in their own time. Can you talk to HR face-to-face? Things are often easier to get arranged when you're in their office, it's too easy to fob someone off on the phone, less personal.

x2boys · 09/05/2014 18:24

This has happened to me several times and I work for the NHS payroll don't like issuing a payment when they cock up as they have to pay a fine I always tell that's not my problem and want to get paid they have always paid me the same day!

enterthedragon · 09/05/2014 20:59

I'm not sure if we have a HR rep on site, however I've been waiting for somebody to call back which hasn't happened so now I've had enough.

Somebody else I have spoken to says this could be classed as a breach of contract.

Op: Next time you go into work, just keep on the case with your manager, HR and head of payroll until they pay. Go and sit in their offices until they do it.
Don't do any work until they have paid you.
If you have had Direct Debits declined and incurred bank charges, they should pay those too.
Remind them that your credit rating could be affected.

What a bunch of knobheads.

FryOneFatManic · 09/05/2014 21:42

A national company will have a proper policy and procedure to cover these kinds of happenings, so don't let them fob you off.

You have a contract with them and contracts go both ways; they are obliged to pay you for the work you've carried out.

If HR have been aware for a week that you've not been paid, then they are out of order as you should have been paid by now.

Aspiringhuman · 09/05/2014 23:58

YANBU, I've had the don't worry we'll pay you double next month line. It's not acceptable. As others have said it's not your problem why it happened, you just need paid.

wowfudge · 10/05/2014 06:35

I cannot believe their attitude. Demand they pay you ASAP and tell them you need the money. The attitude is unbelievable. If you are getting no joy then your manager needs to step up and get involved.

Why do companies forget that your employment contract is a two way thing? You agree to work, they agree to pay you. I would ask the question how would they feel if it happened to them? The very least they should do is sub you the money now then sort out the admin with the next payroll run. I worked with someone who did payroll and was always cocking it up on shift allowances and overtime payments. She could never understand why it upset the people it happened to and her answer was always, 'we'll, they're paid weekly so I'll sort it out next week'. I pointed out to her that people rely on the money and expect to receive it in a timely fashion. She didn't really get it Shock.

DP got paid short because of a management cock up last month. They were very apologetic, sorted it out and paid him the difference quickly.

matildasquared · 10/05/2014 06:58

I'm afraid the situation makes me suspicious. Mistakes can happen but their response should be an immediate payment.

The fact that it's the end of the financial year, and the fact that your manager is trying to fob it off on HR (?) and that they're asking you to wait are all red flags. Sounds like the company is in trouble.

Don't do any more running around. Don't sit in people's offices! Go in with a written, signed statement, hand it to HR with a copy to your boss:

"As you're aware, I haven't been paid for [time period]. I have made several queries but was told I would have to wait, which I'm afraid isn't acceptable. I am raising a grievance around this issue. Kindly provide payment by close of business today."

If anyone tries to bullshit you, just smile very kindly and say, "My position is clear. Sorry, just going to get on with work now."

This is technically withholding pay, and against the law. But the larger issue is that they're heading towards bankruptcy if they can't make payroll.
