To complain to the school about dd1's broken tablet?

D0oinMeCleanin · 09/05/2014 16:11

She took it in to school today. A boy ran into her while she was taking selfies. She dropped it. It cracked.

Of course I am not actually going to complain, it is her own fault for taking it in and messing about with it in the playground but now that I have your attention, how would I find reviews for this item Not the seller in general but that exact item?

When I checked out the cost of repairing the screens before buying it, it was considerably more expensive than £15. Why is this so cheap?

I have no idea, but good work on the clickbait title.

Are you running a book on how many people tell you off, having only read the first para of the OP?

Canus · 09/05/2014 16:43

I don't suppose it's on Amazon?

That's where I go for all my reviews.

Otherwise, I'd say for £15 it is worth taking a shot on.

Any good? www.amazon.com/Screen-Digitizer-Samsung-Galaxy-N8000/dp/B00B0AV30U Quite mixed reviews there.

PoundingTheStreets · 09/05/2014 16:48

Hmm. I've replaced a couple of screens for people. It's not as easy as it looks/sounds, especially with some models which use a greater amount of glue. I have no idea how easy or difficult it is with a Samsung Galaxy Tab, but that might be the reason why the parts are cheap but the cost of getting someone else to do it isn't.

TheFairyCaravan · 09/05/2014 16:49

I think this is it on the American Amazon. There are some reviews there.

Sallyingforth · 09/05/2014 16:51

Of course you are assuming it's only the screen that's damaged. There may be other damage found when it's opened up.

D0oinMeCleanin · 09/05/2014 16:51

It's under warrenty but she dropped it. That wouldn't be under warrenty would it? I can replace it myself. I am confident of that. This model doesn't have too much glue.

OP posts:
PoundingTheStreets · 09/05/2014 16:53

If you've done it before and you're confident, then go for it. Alternatively, you may find that your house insurance covers you for accidental damage.

D0oinMeCleanin · 09/05/2014 18:31

Hmm, that amazon one looks ok. Her tablet is white but I don't suppose it matters if it works.

The tablet is still perfectly workable. There is a hairline crack from corner to corner but it does not effect it's use. I normally wouldn't replace something like this until it got worse but if her dad spots it there will be hell.

We've arranged for her tablet to be "forgotten" at nana's for now but there is only long before he will start asking questions.

Sallyingforth · 09/05/2014 18:35

That sounds hopeful. But it really isn't the sort of thing to be waving around in a playground. She should be leaving it at home in future. Lesson learned.

BertieBotts · 09/05/2014 18:37

Is that actually the screen or just the glass for sale?

I agree I have heard it is fiddly.

cardibach · 09/05/2014 18:41

I'm a bit concerned about dad in this - yes, I have been known to get a bit arsey about careless damage, but both of you lying to him because of his possible behaviour if he finds out? SOunds worrying to me...

D0oinMeCleanin · 09/05/2014 18:58

Oh yes. That's just the glass. Hers would need removing from the frame. That might be a bit more fiddly. I'm on my phone atm but will look into it further when I get home.

OP posts:
FatalCabbage · 09/05/2014 19:20

I tried to get a screen mended under warranty and was told that not only are screens not covered under warranty, but that a broken screen invalidates the warranty regardless of the extent of the damage. So you may be fucked.

D0oinMeCleanin · 09/05/2014 21:14

I'm going to be taking it to bits so I would expect the warrenty to be invalid, tbf.

Luckily it is reported to be relatively cheap and easy to fix all known faults. Most of the parts can be swapped out without too much fuss. Of course the digitiser screen is the hardest to replace.

My dd3 dropped and cracked my galaxy tab screen the other day, I rang Samsung to see how much to be fixed and was quoted £156 Shock

I'm not sure whether to claim on insurance or try to fix myself so watching this thread for suggestions on screen.

magoria · 09/05/2014 21:46

The touch screen and the glass can be really hard to separate it is not just a case of taking the glass off and putting a new one in.

To be honest I doubt you will be able to do it.

There is a machine come out recently which can do it but I bet that will cost you more than a new tablet.

Have a good look around on youtube at it before you waste your money.

Forgettable · 09/05/2014 21:58

Why would her Dad create hell if he finds out? Is he very frightening to be around?

If the tablet cannot be fixed will you replace or not, just musing here really, I can't see how an adult would say Yes to taking a tablet to school so am assuming dd took it without permission.

D0oinMeCleanin · 09/05/2014 22:04

It's not galaxy tab she has. It's the new Note. It's supposed to be easier to dissasemble than ipad etc due to them using less glue. I've never had to do fix up to now, unlike dd2's laptop which I could take apart with my eyes shut after all the practise she has given me Hmm Dd1 is usually really careful with her things.

Heat helps melt the glue. You can buy heat guns but a hairdryer does the trick too.

D0oinMeCleanin · 10/05/2014 00:27

Sorry, I've been at work on my phone so wasn't reading all the replies.

I've repaired phones before, but never tablets, I know the glue is a pain in the arse. According to Google this model has less glue than most others and is relatively easy to take apart. I am certain I can fix it.

She had permission to take it to school. They are allowed their own tablets in school on a Friday afternoon at their own risk. I had to sign a permission slip at the start of the year. She particularly wanted it today because her teacher has designed a homework app, she wanted him to show her it. I knew she had it. What I didn't know is that she did not have protective carry case, she couldn't find it, knew she was running late and didn't want to have to stop to look for it, so left without it.

She is not allowed to leave the house/classroom without it being in the case. Ordinarily I would punish her for this e.g if her father was a normal, reasonable human being, but he is not, so the worry of what he was going to say/do to her has been punishment enough for her I think.

I was not initially going to repair it for her. I was just going to tell Twunt that I dropped it and put up with his ranting and raving and name calling myself, however that was when I assumed this screen would cost in the region of £50, now I know it's cheaper I will repair it and save anyone having to cope with fall out.

If it will not repair, although I can't see why it won't, that's her shitty luck. She was given the case for a reason. If she wants it replaced she'd best get busy earning some pocket money.

I honestly do not know what her father would do/say. He has never been violent towards them before, but I wouldn't put it past him. He has threatened it. They've never broken anything this expensive before. Dd1 is normally very careful with her things and dd2 gets only cheaper, easily repairable tech until she is older. Even dd2's laptop charger port coming loose (5 minute fix with a tube of superglue) causes world war 3 with threats of grounding forever more, no more birthdays ever and such what. Dd2 is his blatant favourite, her laptop is worth a fraction of what dd1's tablet is worth. Dd2 is able to look suitably chastised when he rants at her, dd1 seems set on adding fuel to the fire these days. What he would do/say to her if he finds out is worrying.

I have an appointment to sign the tenancy agreement for a new home for myself and the girls on Monday.

I've ordered the one from Ebay, which had the free tools and looked to still be in a frame.

Glad to hear your finally leaving! Good luck.

MrsTerryPratchett · 10/05/2014 01:27

SO glad you're leaving D0oin. Long time coming.

D0oinMeCleanin · 10/05/2014 01:29

Yes, well they've promised me I will get the keys every monday for the last 4 mondays so I m not holding my breath. I have now been told to actually go to the office with my bond, normally I just get told to ring on Monday to see how things are progressing and maybe get the keys.
