AIBU to think Sainsburys should do deals for existing customers...

not just new ones!

£15 off your first delivery seems to be the only offer they ever have on. Ocado send me emails once in a blue moon about some free choccies or wine, but Saino's just have the same old food offers that are brand wide.

how many thousands upon thousands of people do you think shop at sainsburys? if you was constantly having to compete with asda, tesco, morrisons, aldi, lidle etc would you want to just give away a shit load of stock? wether it be wine or chocolates?

lets take a £10 bottle of wine for example, with just 1,000 customers thats £10,000 they are essentially giving away.

Howah · 09/05/2014 10:52

Its not giving it away - its an investment to secure repeat business. I would be more inclined to choose them over ocado if they did say, a £5 off your next shop offer.

They aren't 'competing' with Tescos & Asda anyway, they are actually more expensive and do less deals.

Have you tried being temporarily disloyal (switching to Tesco/Ocado or whatever for a month) to see if they send you vouchers to tempt you back?

I don't do online shopping, but for various reasons tend to do my main grocery shop at a random mixture of Sainsbury's, Tesco, Waitrose and Lidl/Aldi, depending on where I am and what I am planning to cook. I have noticed that if I haven't been to Tesco for a big shop for more than three weeks, they send me vouchers offering big discounts, e.g. this week I got £13 off a shop of £90, with another load of £9 off £90 vouchers covering the next few weeks. Sainsbury's aren't quite so generous, but I do seem to get a lot more bonus points/discount vouchers when I haven't been there for a while.

JessesGirl · 09/05/2014 11:01

I change which supermarket I shop with online every few weeks for a bit of variety. Sainsburys have sent me £12 off a £60 shop voucher nearly every week since the beginning of the year so it isn't just new customers. Try shopping somewhere else for a while and see if they try to entice you back.

Ohnonotagen · 09/05/2014 11:03

i don't shop at sainsburys regularly but sometimes get petrol from there and i have often got £8 off a £40 shop, £12 off a £60 shop etc. My mum and uncle who shop at sainsburys regularly hardly ever get these. It doesn't pay to be loyal!!

TimeForAnotherNameChange · 09/05/2014 11:48

I get tonnes of offers from Sainsburys via my nectar card, and shop there two or three times a month, spending maybe £50-£70 a time. I get packs of vouchers through the post usually four lots of £4 off an £20 shop, sometimes £6 off £50, and the other week I got a till receipt voucher for £7 off a £50 shop! They obviously love me!

Howah · 09/05/2014 11:51

I have never seen those offers - but we hardly ever go in store and don't buy petrol. Whenever DP does go instore all he ever gets are the £15 off a first order one.

Hmmm... I may have to take my custom to tesco/asda to see if they miss me!

I mostly shop there and regularly get emails from them offering me free delivery, 15 pounds off etc - don't know why! But I used a 15 pounds off code last week and I've been shopping with them online for years?

gotnotimeforthat · 09/05/2014 12:09

OP they are competing. All the big supermarkets are.

The top contenders are asda, tesco, morrisons and sainsburys.

Have you not noticed that most super market adverts now name drop ( or colour drop, yellow for morriosons blue for tesco etc) in order to seem better and get ahead.

The asda chick is a good example.

gotnotimeforthat · 09/05/2014 12:11

Also it wouldn't necessarily secure repeat business.
Tesco give me £10 off vouchers all the time but I still go to morrisons and asda because its cheaper to shop around.

catgirl1976 · 09/05/2014 12:11

You could use a new e-mail address with each order to get the newbie discount.

Not that I would ever do that. Oh no.

wowfudge · 09/05/2014 12:15

I think a hell of a lot of companies could do more for their existing, loyal companies. Unfortunately I think getting new accounts is seen as more attractive than retaining and developing the ones they have.

For existing customers, the aim is to get you to spend more, commit to more and once they know your pattern of spending they are less likely to give you a sizeable discount perhaps?

specialsubject · 09/05/2014 12:36

go in and spend about a fiver. You'll often get several big discount vouchers which I then give to MIL for her weekly shop because I use Aldi for that
