Someone has shared a FB viral photo of a guy on the tube asleep.on another guys shoulder. The story goes that the man asleep happens to be black and the man whose shoulder he is asleep on is Jewish. The photographer asked after a few minutes "Do you want me to wake him?" to which the Jewish man said "no no let him sleep he must have had a hard day, we have all been there". General round up is that isnt the Jewish man marvellous and noble for permitting the black man to sleep on his shoulder.

It has fucked me off.

Race, religion....why? A man on the tube says "ah weve all been there, let him sleep" as another man sleeps on his shoulder. Thats an act of kindness and understanding.

This viral reads as though (1) the photographer thought the man should be woken because he was black (2) the Jewish man was remarkable because he allowed a black man to sleep on his shoulder

Am I just reading too far into it?

I've seen it, I think you're reading too much into it.

The way I saw it was that one man was kindly allowing another man to sleep on his shoulder. This was very nice of him, not because he's white and the other man is black, but because it's just nice.

No one would ever let a stranger sleep on them on the tube, most Londoners shit themselves if you accidentally make eye contact whilst commuting.

The picture was taken on a subway in NYC.

gordyslovesheep · 08/05/2014 21:42

it's not saying 'isn't he a brilliant jew' btw it's saying 'how nice that this man didn't make massive assumptions about the young black male asleep on his shoulder and how nice he showed compassion'

maybe start their op

You've got a point. Who gives a crap if he's black? Or the other dude's Jewish?

YANBU.

gordyslovesheep · 08/05/2014 21:43

there ffs

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 08/05/2014 21:43

nameuschangeus · 08/05/2014 21:45

Fwiw OP that's exactly what I thought. Yanbu.

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 08/05/2014 21:46

Why should it be assumed that a black man asleep on your shoulder is risky or monumental!?

OP posts:
Pimpf · 08/05/2014 21:48

Yanbu. It's a nice story, why does it need to mention race/ religion?

ExcuseTypos · 08/05/2014 21:50

YANBU.

Why do they need to mention race/religion? It's bloody shocking.

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 08/05/2014 21:51

Thank you.

Man lets another man snooze on his shoulder - act of kindness.

Jewish man lets a black man snooze on his shoulder - how noble. A black man. ?Pearl clutching author and commentators, wont somebody think of the children??

SnotandBothered · 08/05/2014 22:01

It's fucking ridiculous and I wish you hadn't posted it because it has now pissed me off as well.

Once again, people are making a race issue out of a non-race-issue thus making it become a race-issue when it was never a race-issue to begin with. Which just feeds the race-issue-machine.

It's two men.

Edendance · 08/05/2014 22:05

I agree op. I saw this the other day and thought that it didn't come across very well in that respect. Just make the simple statement, if people want to read race/religion elements into it then that's up to them.

LettertoHerms · 08/05/2014 22:08

Hm, sounds like a Humans of New York post?

He's a photographer in New York that photographers people from all walks of life, and asks them a bit about themselves for the captions, posts them on his blog.

They're often touching, but he does his bit being very neutral yet descriptive, as a photojournalist. I'm sure he did describe race/religion, as he does tend to mention defining points that he observes or are mentioned. I think yabu unreasonable and making more of it than you should. One man did a nice thing for another.

And frankly, if people want to point out race, so what? Do you think racism is not present in this day, in a city like New York, and seeing a man of one race treating another kindly cannot, or should not, mean something to someone?

Bringing race into it doesn't automatically mean he's 'noble' like he's doing something distasteful, and it makes me a little ill you would put it like that. But for many, there's still a divide between races, and a hesitancy. The image wouldn't change if the one sleeping were reversed. It's two people being human, and the fact that two people can view each other as only fellow humans can mean a lot.

Raskova · 08/05/2014 22:25

YABU and overthinking it.

It's not that one guy is black and the other is Jewish. It's that they are not the same but really don't care, as all of us should be.

It's a heartfelt bit of viral crap that should give you that warm fuzzy feeling, so relax Grin

Raskova · 08/05/2014 22:27

Also if it is American, race is a Huuuuge issue over there (more so than here and many people say it is really bad here regardless of what we think) which still needs addressing Hmm

MorrisZapp · 08/05/2014 22:36

What a load of patronising shit. I absolutely hate these vitals asking us to be all 'awww' when people are vaguely pleasant to each other.

They get millions of clicks and shares and everybody thinks theyve personally made the world a better place. Well they haven't. Put your money where your likey finger is, and by money I mean thought, word and deed.

If I have to see another sharey carey pish-fest from the school bully who married well and now distains me from a Range Rover I'll fucking scream.

GarlicMayHaveNamechanged · 08/05/2014 22:48

YANBU IMO. I would say something in the comments. I'm all over the Huff, rallying the meek against bigots! People won't think until you give them a fresh thought Wink

I loathe schmaltzy crap anyway, but that's by the bye.

GarlicMayHaveNamechanged · 08/05/2014 22:50

Put your money where your likey finger is, and by money I mean thought, word and deed.

I am stealing this.

MrsSkilly · 08/05/2014 22:54

I thought exactly the same OP. If it wasn't about race/religion, it wouldn't have been mentioned. I constantly ignore that sort of shit on Facebook as find it tedious and pointless. YANBU

Scarletohello · 08/05/2014 23:00

I can't believe this is even a story at all tbh. But I do get what you mean about the racial/ religious elements. I think tho there are bigger things in the world to get het up about...:)

softlysoftly · 08/05/2014 23:51

OK watched the video now and YANBU. What a load of bollocks. I kind of get the "melting pot is a positive thing" angle but the the rest Hmm

I can't believe it actually made the news Shock they have way too many channels to fill over there!
