Would I be unreasonable/unethical to see baby clothes bought in a charity shop on Ebay?

I haven't yet as something about doesn't sit well with me.

I've started selling some of Ds's baby clothes on ebay. Many have been bought from charity shops. I've donated a bunch of clothes back to the charity shop but thought I might get a few (much needed) quid for the nicer ones.

Honest opinions please?

Charity shops raise money for their cause by selling stuff that has been donated. They don't sell stuff cheaply as a charitable service to the community. There's absolutely no problem with you selling these clothes.

PrincessBabyCat · 08/05/2014 15:34

If you already bought them then you've given them your money. I don't see why selling them would be a problem. But if it really doesn't sit well with you, you could always volunteer at a charity for a weekend or something to give back.

For me, it would be about your intention when you bought the clothes - I'd think it a bit dodgy, in moral terms, to buy things from a charity shop specifically in order to sell them for a profit.

But, since you bought them to use them, and are now making a choice about what to do now your DS has outgrown them, I think it's fine for you to choose to sell them rather than give them away either to a person or a charity shop.

Baby clothes tend to sell very badly in charity shops - at least round here. My mum works in one and very few take baby clothes. Mum has just gone through all my children's baby clothes and extracted a couple of things to sell, the rest will go for rags. They will be grateful for the money for them!!

It might be slightly unethical to spot designer stuff at way under value in a charity shop and EBay it, but bought used and resold I can't see any problem.

Round here I'm certain some items have been through NCT sales more than once. I'm sure I've seen DD2's indestructible fleece jacket years and years after it stopped fitting her. I'm guessing that had been handed down or resold several times.

ImAThrillseekerBunny · 08/05/2014 16:00

Fine. I'm sure I sold a couple of things at NCT sales that had originally come from charity shops. They priced it at a realistic level to start off with. I agree that the only time you should feel guilty is if you've made a profit from "insider information" such as recognising genuine Clarice Cliff at the back of the bric-a-brac shelf, or just knowing that the market rate for second hand Brio is really high.

expatinscotland · 08/05/2014 16:05

No, but hard to see where you make any money on them.

WorraLiberty · 08/05/2014 16:22

I can't see 3rd hand clothes selling for more than a few quid per bag

But YANBU anyway
