To think that this is attention seeking (new baby and Facebook related)?

An acquaintance of mine had a baby two weeks ago. For a week she and her DH repeatedly posted photos of the baby on Facebook, but refused to reveal the sex. Obviously people kept commenting and saying they couldn't wait to find out the sex.

After a week they finally revealed the sex (boy) and said that they had chosen a name but were "keeping it private for now". So again, a week of continuous photos of "baby" and loads of people asking them what the name was.

No name announced as yet.

Both she and her DH are generally attention seeking.

AIBU to think that it is totally attention seeking behaviour? Fair enough sometimes it takes a while to choose a name, but why keep a baby's sex secret for a week?

They sound hard work, I wouldn't give them the satisfaction of asking any details!

LeggyBlondeNE · 08/05/2014 11:37

Maybe they don't know yet, babies can have ambiguous genetalia sometimes ...

parallax80 · 08/05/2014 11:39

1:~4,500 babies are born with ambiguous genitalia.

So, probably, this baby wasn't, but it's possible.

OldVikingDudeHidMyTubeSocks · 08/05/2014 11:40

When you are finally honoured with knowing the child's name annoy them to hell by always getting it slightly wrong/misspelled in the comments section of the numerous photos. Grin

Birdsgottafly · 08/05/2014 11:40

Perhaps they were hoping to swap for what they really wanted?

The name thing I understand, I couldn't be arsed with feedback, the gender secrecy is odd, unless there was a good reason, such as genetic testing.

Girlwithnotattoos · 08/05/2014 11:42

Leggy they do know the sex - it's a bit it's the name guessing now.

I agree with not getting involved in their silly game, I'd go so far as to hide the posts. But first I'd put something like - would love to send baby X a card/present but don't feel I can until I know his name.

daphnehoneybutt · 08/05/2014 11:43

Maybe the baby was born with both sets of bits and they were deciding which gender to raise them as?

They sound like proper sad cases tbh

Birdsgottafly · 08/05/2014 11:43

Having thought about it, I know of five people who have hermaphroditism, so it could be possible.

The name thing probably means they are attention seeking, unless it is linked.

QueenofallIsee · 08/05/2014 11:43

They sound god awful..I would meanly consider a concerned head tilt and asking if baby was hermaphrodite and offer my support at this difficult time

thebodylovesspring · 08/05/2014 11:44

Oh don't bother liking or commenting.

Some people fail to realise that others have actually had babies too and it's fairly boring unless they are yours or close family.

I would be tempted to put yawnin the comments box.

Gurnie · 08/05/2014 11:45

If there is ambiguity over the gender (that has happened to a couple of people I know) then it is totally understandable. If there isn't it's very annoying I agree.

Floggingmolly · 08/05/2014 11:52

Jesus, how fecking tedious Hmm. Fgs don't keep feeding their nonsense by "liking" their posts (or whatever, I don't do Facebook); they might think someone somewhere is actually interested.

Wellwellwell3holesintheground · 08/05/2014 11:55

Guess three times a day - finish each set of guesses with 'Rumplestiltskin'.

Here are some possibilities to get you started:

Gordon
Bernard
Keith
Oswald
Barry
Englebert

Alisvolatpropiis · 08/05/2014 12:12

They sound really weird.

DoJo · 08/05/2014 12:18

Why are you friends with these people?

softlysoftly · 08/05/2014 12:21

If there were gender issues would you be on facebook though? Wouldn't you just avoid the whole thing until you had made some decisions?

Sounds attention seeking, don't feed it.

expatinscotland · 08/05/2014 12:24

Why bother with idiots like this? Post on their wall, 'Who fucking cares?' And then block.

Gurnie · 08/05/2014 12:25

Oooooh, that is tempting indeed expat! At least if would be for me!

Viviennemary · 08/05/2014 12:25

They sound a really silly pair. I'd be tempted to put a comment like 'it's getting a bit boring now'. But probably wouldn't.

rainbowfeet · 08/05/2014 12:29

Some people are just plain annoying!!!

This couple sound like 2 of them!! Wink

WhereHas1999DissappearedToo · 08/05/2014 12:36

Urg, just ignore them. Some people can be a right up their own backsides sometimes

Summerbreezing · 08/05/2014 12:39

Haven't some zelebs done this lately? Been very coy about the name and then 'announced' it in some trashy magazine. All very silly. I think the royal birth last year has gone to some people's heads and they genuinely think half the world is hanging on with bated breath to hear this mundane information.

Owllady · 08/05/2014 12:42

Maybe they have called it Brian

jeee · 08/05/2014 12:53

It's fairly vomit-inducing behaviour. But when you have a baby, particularly when it's no.1, you can become extremely a little bit attention seeking. When little baby Necropolis-George has kept them awake for the ninth night running, they'll be less smug.

Pugaboo · 08/05/2014 13:10

Assuming they're not dealing with gender ambiguity, this is horrendous. Stupid attention-seeking twats. UNFRIEND.
