They (local council) instigated a 3-black bin rule back in February. Our household only tends to put 1 bag out a week. Got up yesterday morning to find somebody had added another 2 bags.

Now this meant that we weren't breaking any rules as still only 3 bags, however, I'm a bit miffed. This is probably totally unreasonable. Just don't know how to handle it; if people just dump their bags with other people's, I could get up to find another 5 have been added.

More a what would you do, I suppose. I don't suppose I really care that they've done it as such-though they could have asked and maybe if I had more in the future I could have asked the same of them- more that this is a new scheme and the bloody council could get arsey and stupid letters reminding me about the rules.

Discovered this on leaving the house for work (day off today) so couldn't do anything about it yesterday.

If you were really bothered about it you could go through the added bags and speak to the neighbour involved.

I don't want to be looking through other people's rubbish and even if I did do this; people's rubbish tends to be much the same so how would I know who it was?

It's a hard one - in the future you might need to do the same and if you weren't using your quota it's silly to be angry as it wasn't doing you harm. I do see your point that perhaps you may have needed to add 2 bags this morning, meaning you would have had to figure out what to do with the extra...but that didn't happen.

IMO the Council is BU for draconian rules on rubbish. Ours won't collect a wheelie bin out if the lid is more than 4 inches open! You will however get a letter delivered to you at the cost of the Council Tax payer highlighting your terrible error. Madness.

Lioninthesun · 08/05/2014 08:37

You could always call the rubbish collection dept at your council and explain what has happened and ask what they would recommend.

Do the letters say what punishment you get if you go over quota Wink (isn't it all so ridiculous!)

I always want to fine our bin men for the trail of rubbish they leave behind them every week!

Pinkandpurplehairedlady · 08/05/2014 08:37

We always run out of room in our bin whereas my neighbours very rarely fill theirs so I put stuff in theirs too. I do always ask though!

jenipat · 08/05/2014 08:37

I think they're draconian, too, and it leads to the sort of nonsense that I- and doubtless others- will experience.

I would log this with council as a complaint of the system in case it happens again.

londonrach · 08/05/2014 09:14

Phone the council as this is an issue that could reoccur. How come your neighbour didn't know you going yo add another two bags in the morning. They should gave asked. My parents and neighbours always put items in each other's bibs when each are away and put the bins out to look like someone there but this us agreed and all have door keys for each other.

Gemma222 · 08/05/2014 09:44

We have people in our street who put rubbish in other peoples bins without asking - definitely not on Angry

MelonadeAgain · 08/05/2014 09:48

In the past this has happened to me and I've put on rubber gloves and had a quick look through the top of the rubbish, where handily, there was a used addressed envelope to a nearby flat. I confronted the owner and returned his rubbish bag to him and told him not to do it again. He was sheepish and claimed he had been "tired" when he put it out. Anyway, it didn't happen again.

But rubbish collections are in fact rubbish in this country now and hardly not worth paying for. I'd rather see large communal bins emptied daily as in some other countries.

Sparklingbrook · 08/05/2014 09:51

I would split my rubbish into 3 bags.
