AIBU? My mate has pissed me off....

I'm feeling a bit hurt and pissed off by my friend's behaviour. DH thinks that I should just shrug it off and not let it bother me which I've been really trying to do.

I have a friend who is very talented. She's a model, dancer and a fantastic singer. I have the utmost faith that she will get far and succeed.

I like to think I have skills of my own and I actually have an audition for the dance company she works for. Since I got the audition (off my own back, even though she's been promising to put in a good word for ages) she's been really weird with me. She hasn't been encouraging at all....despite how much I've tried to encourage her (helping her out with costumes and makeup etc, liking and sharing stuff on facebook for her and the company etc). All she's done since I told her about the audition is try and talk me down.....telling me I don't understand how hard it is....how will I afford this and that...it's really difficult etc. Belittling my skills and experience somewhat.

To be honest, I kind of feel like she likes to be the "performer" in our group of friends and always has to have the attention on her....and she doesn't like the fact that someone else might also be getting somewhere.

This all sounds so petty, but I'm so excited for my opportunity and I really thought she might at least be a bit enthusiastic about it, like I have been for everything she's ever done.

I'm aware this might sound stupid and like I'm about 12 but I'm quite actually really hurt by some of her comments and her attitude. It's like she's trying to laugh off my achievements while taking a bow for her own (which are similar).

AIBU or is she trying to make me be realistic? Am I being a bitch?

Completely insufficient info to be able to judge. We have no idea of the expected standard, her standard, or objectively how you measure up. She might be being completely correct, but then she might be jealous - total speculation to decide, frankly.

PaintedLady2014 · 07/05/2014 20:23

Fair play UncleT. Without showing a video of us both I'm not sure how to remedy that Grin

Now I'm intrigued. What exactly can you do with fire? Grin

PaintedLady2014 · 07/05/2014 20:56

Fire breathing, fire twirling/poi etc Grin

Either she wants to be centre of attention or she has created her own "persona" at the dance company and an old friend who knows her outside of this persona could damage it?

redexpat · 07/05/2014 21:02

Shock Coooool!

Shakey1500 · 07/05/2014 21:05

What everyone else said, just wanted to add, break a leg!

PaintedLady2014 · 07/05/2014 21:07

Thanks Grin

Yeah, I'd say she's jealous. Does she spin fire at all? Because I've seen it often that even those who are really good at what they do get extremely jealous of the fire spinners in these groups because it's usually them who get the attention at events, no matter how good other people are.

I would love to join a fire troop, I'm really not a natural at spinning poi though :( I can do the technical bits but cannot dance or perform for the life of me :( Good on you and good luck for your audition!

Yep!

Or she doesn't want anyone from her real life there because a) she's talked herself up to you lot or b) she's talked herself up to them.

Some people just can't be happy for others. They just can't!

PaintedLady2014 · 07/05/2014 21:16

ConfusedPixie - she can't spin at all, it's the one thing I'm good at, though I can dance and I hate to say it, but my (physical) style is quite unique, so I do think that is what would be interesting to them.

WalterMitty - I've seen her dance - she is damn good. Way better than me in terms of straight dancing, I'd never take that away from her, but hen I've never tried to.

Yes but you don't know if things are going as well as she says or what she's telling them about her rl IYSWIM!

Just know that you're getting this audition because you deserve it. If you get the gig it'll be because you deserve it. And if she can't be happy for you (as you are for her) then she's not the friend you thought she was!

Good luck!!

PaintedLady2014 · 07/05/2014 21:29

Thanks. I keep telling myself that. I'm just quite hurt, because I gave her so much encouragement etc and it seems the same isn't forthcoming....

but hey, nevermind eh?

I can see why she would not encourage you to work without pay. It makes things a lot harder for performers who try to make a living from it.

UncleT · 07/05/2014 21:42

Great idea painted - a video of each of you, then a vote. Grin

LangenFlugelHappleHoff · 07/05/2014 21:45

It sounds like jealousy, I'm afraid I would just suck it up, shrug it off and carry on.Good luck!

PaintedLady2014 · 07/05/2014 21:45

LMAO Grin

I'm loving that idea!
