To think that DH is WRONG about where the sofa should go?

We've got a tiny sitting room and because we have no dining room or decently sized kitchen, we also have a small table and chairs in the sitting room.

Anyway...it's a long room....one of the largest walls is taken up by window and the opposite large wall has a chimney breast and two doors...either side of the breast.

the sofa is small...it's a vintage Ercol. It fits across the chimney breast which is large...but DH seems to think this is shit and the sofa should be in the MIDDLE of the room at a slight angle!

It leaves a tiny corridor of space to get in and out of the room...who'se right? Me or him?

It doesn't matter what the question is. You are right and he is wrong. Does it still say that in the marriage service?

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 05/05/2014 22:46

I dont understand how his was would work but a sofa against a chimney breast is weird - can it go on one of the shorter walls?

MrsWinnibago · 05/05/2014 22:48

Hacked no...one wall is behind the table and chairs and the other has the TV on it....all the plugs are there.

And the chimney breast is big..and long...so the sofa fits. There's no fireplace in there...it's flat.

Other option is under the window which is also ok to my mind...he's all "I don't want my back to the window..."

Er..WHY!¬????

Do you have DC? Makes a difference because you basically need to put the furniture where is maximises play space even if it looks shit.

CheerfulYank · 05/05/2014 22:52

He is completely wrong, that would look bizarre.

MrsWinnibago · 05/05/2014 22:53

Softly exactly! I told DH that he can't muddle up the room like that....we need some clear space. We have DC yes.

Take pics. One your way, one his. I generally take the woman's side when it comes to interior decorating though

MrsWinnibago · 05/05/2014 22:54

I've just told him that it can go where he's got it now at night and the DC are asleep...as a tv watching thing...it's light enough to move very easily.

But otherwise it goes where I say it goes. In the day and while DC are about that is. I don't even watch TV so it doesn't bother me

You are right. Now I'll go back and read the post. :o

gamerchick · 05/05/2014 22:55

no you're right.. you need to maximise space for kids but I would have the settee under the window.

MrsWinnibago · 05/05/2014 22:57

Panzee Grin

gamer yes I agree....under window will be best. I just couldn't be arsed to try it tonight as knackered

What about getting rid of the table and chairs and replacing with individual foldaway tables?

this gives you more room to play with.

Any furniture placed at an angle runs the risk of looking very dated. But I would generally agree with him that sofas should be floated if you have a lot of space rather than right back against the wall. If the chimney breast is the ideal size for for your sofa (presumably its filled?) then that sounds like a good spot but if you have the space I'd put a console table behind it with a couple of lamps to push it away from the walls a little.

If your space is smaller then furniture against the walls can be the better layout but a room will generally look better with furniture floating.

MrsWinnibago · 06/05/2014 11:14

Miaw me too! It's like the tv is the only focal point that people can think of!

If it is a large room then could you not have the sofa in the middle with a console table or similar behind it, and a separate space for the dining table? Like the top picture here.
