I have a lovely comfortable bike. It has 21 gears, quite an upright seating position and a comfy saddle. Front suspension. Im quite fat but reasonably fit. Dp thinks my bike isnt good for long distances and id be beyter with a road bike. Never mind that I can't afford a new bike and they look like implements of torture. By long distance I mean about 30 miles. I manage about 15 -20 no ptoblems. Would prefer less road work as im very anxious person. Am I setting myself up for a fall?

I echo some others comments in that get slick tyres put on it's easier and don't worry slick tyres give you better grip because there is more surface area (of tyre) on the road than knobbly tyres (well that is what I was told when I switched).

I have switched to road bike a while back and the most notable difference is I go alot faster without as much effort lol

I would go 30 miles on my hybrid MTB, but only with slicks and understanding that it would be a long ride. I'm slow on any bike.

I did the C2C on a hybrid, 50+ miles a day, though it is one of the relatively more road-y hybrids. DH has done it (and several other longer rides too) on a full mountain bike. Road bikes are less good for anything bumpy and also easier to break, also I don't like going too fast so I don't miss the slight extra speed (my hybrid is pretty fast anyway and definitely faster than a mountain bike).

I did London to Brighton on my mountain bike, it was fine! I have a road bike but I don't love it, I prefer being off road on sturdy wheels.

Stick with your hybrid if you go off road.

There's a very good cycling forum here (the CTC) where you'll get loads of excellent advice, but I reckon if you're already comfy doing 20 miles then you should definitely use the same bike to do 30. Why change if you are already comfortable?

30 isn't even very long distance, by a lot of people's standards.

Just make sure you go over odd bits of bumpy ground where your partner will be pretty uncomfortable on a skinny road bike, so you can look all smug and, well, comfortable, while he's getting his bones shaken and worrying about his rims Smile.
