To be livid with my neighbours....

Relatively new neighbours have moved in. We have land that runs behind their garden which is clearly demarcated by a fence then a hedge (which we paid for and planted) on our side of the fence. This area is our veggie patch. We don't use any chemicals on our land, haven't for 6 yrs. AIBU to be completely pissed off that underneath the hedge behind their garden is completely bare brown soil, devoid of any weeds so they have obviously used weed killer on it. Right next to our bloody rhubarb. FFS!

Did they put weed killer down on their land? Confused

morethanpotatoprints · 05/05/2014 19:47

Runesigil

did they do it over the fence or come onto your property.
I'm not sure I could have contained myself.
And, you learn something new everyday, I have heard of nettle tonic antea, but not as a veg Thanks

Freckletoes · 05/05/2014 19:54

Sorry for confusion but it is on OUR land, under OUR hedge, leaning (or maybe even climbing) over OUR fence!

Ah, OK - in which case, that's not on. Can you have a wee word with them to ask if they used weed killer, and if so could the keep it well back from your land?

MammaTJ · 05/05/2014 19:56

Ah, that's different then although a good dose of weedkiller would be too much to expect from my neighbours.

Freckletoes · 05/05/2014 20:00

And no-it has definitely not been hand weeded or dug over-it is all burnt to a crisp. And stops abruptly at the rear of the next house along.

No YANBU as it is your land, I'd be very pissed off too.

I would be annoyed too, how tall is your hedge/fence?

Would they be able to reach the area by just leaning over or would they have to climb over into your property to enable them to spray weedkiller?

cozietoesie · 05/05/2014 20:10

'burnt to a crisp' ? That could be a weedkiller flame gun. Still not on, on your land, but not as bad as weedkiller. I'd speak to them - they may not be aware of where the precise boundaries are. Things can be clouded by real life landscape.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/05/2014 20:15

That would piss me off too.

kentishgirl · 05/05/2014 20:20

YANBU.

Knock, ask them exactly what they used, remind them it is your land, tell them not to do anything to your garden again. It's possible they imagined they were doing you a favour (were they also sorting out weeds in their garden) so see what their attitude is before you get cross with them. If it was just a mistake, then be nice, but firm. If it was them being entitled twats, you are going to have to stand up to them now or they'll be even worse in future.

By the way, it was perfectly clear in your post that they did this on your land, I don't know why anyone got confused about that other than reading too quickly I guess.

LurkAndLearn · 05/05/2014 20:20

Can I ask if the fence is on their side of the hedge? If the hedge was on my side, I would assume it was my land and therefore I could weed it how I liked.

ThatsAStupidUsername · 05/05/2014 20:22

I sort of do this. Confused.
My nieghbours let ivy grow up my new fence and I liberally spray it with weed killer. I spray it from my side but some does go through the fence where the slats have been forced apart by the ivy. Ivy damages fences. I'm friends with my neighbour and have mentioned the ivy to her but I think she forgets about it.

Freckletoes · 05/05/2014 20:25

Hedge is only 3.5 feet high as we suspect they keep pruning it but that helps a young hedge bush out so we haven't complained yet Grin Fence is new pig net and stakes, quite clear where boundary lies. So it could have been done from their side without climbing over. "Burnt to a crisp" isn't a good description-just brown and lifeless compared to the next section which is full of grass and weeds!

Lurk fence is on their side, hedge is on our side. We sold a strip of land a couple of years back to the previous house owners and were very careful to make sure we fenced, hedged etc to keep control of the what happened on the boundary.

My neighbours once creosoted my lettuces, and our slide and outdoor toys, by using a spray gun on their fence on a windy day. They're usually wonderful so I shrugged it off, but YANBU.

LurkAndLearn · 05/05/2014 20:33

In that case YANBU. I would definitely have a word.

Hoppinggreen · 05/05/2014 20:40

at our old house our neighbour spray painted the fence and made my piglet gnome go all spotty - bastards!!

Have a word OP

cozietoesie · 05/05/2014 20:51

You had a piglet gnome ?

UncleT · 05/05/2014 21:09

If you really think it's on your land then they need to explain themselves. YANBU - go challenge them and nip this in the bud right away.
